There comes a day when you get sick and tired of having your common sense and abilities called into question three days a week and your soul sucked out of you for the sake of a part-time job that not only REQUIRES you to have a working car and a cel-phone that sends and receives text messages (unreimbursed) but has actually given you shingles and driven you into debt in the bargain. There comes a day, after four-and-a-half years, when you grow a spine, get fed up, tell the boss what the lay of the land is, write a resignation letter, leave the office keys on the office desk, lock the place up, walk out the door without any other job lined up, and start concentrating on the freelance art career you really want. This was that day.

Bio & Chemistry Division (BCD) achievements:
Every inhabitant in the Nordic countries, or more than 24 million people, and many more around the world, are each day consuming or using at least one product, and probably more products, which has been invented or improved through the research, education and innovation activities of the Bio & Chemistry Division (BCD) of the Nordic Industrial Fund under the Nordic Council of Ministers. That is at least 70.000 new and different product-consumer-contacts each minute day and night ! (BCD-Statistics 1998).

01.7 De Carlske Fabriker (DCF) (1)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1957 – 1968 (11 years):
Production Manager and Chief Chemist
De Carlske Fabriker Brdr. S. & B. Lund (Denmark).
DCF was established in 1916. Main products: Wall paper paste (Arabin and Favorit) and industrial adhesives for the following areas and industries: Agriculture; food and beverages; paper and paper products; printing and publishing and foundries. Partner company: Starch Products Ltd., Slough, England. Export: Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Middle East. Responsibility areas: Production, product development, quality management and industrial customers.
DCF was the first Gluemanufacturer in Europe (1957-62) to remove and replace all product components which might influence the human health or the environment in a negative way.
Harmless salts replaced chromium components, gum arabic replaced plumbum compositions and cellulose fibers were used instread of asbestos just to mention a few examples.
This was long before any laws concerning these subjects were effective.
Another milestone in this period was the creation of The Maximum Value Method (MVM) which ment a completely new approach to product development methodology (see next section). New products developed using MVM had a Complaint-Index (the amount of customer complaints per 100.000 produced units) being only 1% of the market average for customer complaints for compareable products.
The new developed products using MVM had another feature. Normally one or more characteristics of a new-introduced product has to be adjusted and improved after some months on the market. This was never the case when MVM was used as the product development tool. MVM-products were from the very beginning of their lifecircles optimal answers to the expectations of the market.
A reason for the above mentioned achievements through MVM was without any doubt, that there was established a very close cooperation between our laboratory and 1 - 3 customers (users of the product to be developed) and from the first day of the product development process.

starring Mac (as Lee Ving) and R. (as Danzig):
Mother, warn your daughters not to look my way, we're looking for fresh flesh!
black pencil .1927. Amsterdam.
This drawing my mother made for her fashionschool when she was 16 years. I suppose she had to use some example for this. According to the educational program of her school. The example I do not know.
It is interesting to see how this type of drawing was trained. Different from the training now usual on fashion/artschools.
These fashion drawings of my mother were much appreciated
by her school and the work was shown on exhibitions of the school. She was seen as talented and found some years later in a period of crisis, bad economy, with many loosing their job, a fine job at the then famous Haute Couture Fashionhouse Hirsch in Amsterdam. Were very expensive clothes were sold. And she gave lessons. Untill she married. It was not done in this period in her surroundings for a married woman to have a job. Many years later as a senior she was welcomed at Hirsch again for parttime work.

The fine building in the centre of the city is used by Apple now.
I made this photograph not far from where my where my father was living in Austin, Texas, in 1971. It was the Tarrytown neighborhood and I haven't been back in years but it seems unlikely that there many residents in that now probably way expensive neighborhood keep livestock. I could be wrong, though. Printed by me on Agfa paper in the University of Rochester darkrooms, where I worked parttime in the early 1970s.
