Dead Pubs (history)

A bottle of Raging Bitch from Flying Dog Brewery in Frederick, Maryland, at The White Horse in London.

Raging Bitch is an 8.3% abv 60 IBUs Belgian-style India Pale Ale, brewed for the 20th anniversary of the brewery in 2010. It was brewed using El Diablo yeast and hopped with Amarillo, Columbus and Warrior.

The beer poured a cloudy orange color with a white head. Wonderful Belgian-style aroma, with lots of sweet malts, spices, fruit - particularly orange - and a strong yeast note. Mouthfeel was medium heavy to light with a good carbonation. Flavor started out with a good malt sweetness and some fruits. The yeast note was clearly present too. The hops were milder than expected but created a nice long, bitter finish with lingering yeast and fruit notes.

This is a great beer, obviously more Belgian in style than a typical US IPA.

London Eating

Dead Pubs (history)

A Beef Wellington dinner for two at The White Horse on Parson's Green in London.

Beef Wellington is a preparation of fillet steak coated with pâté (often pâté de foie gras) and duxelles, which is then wrapped in puff pastry and baked. It tasted yummy!

A bottle of Imperial Nut Brown Ale Tommyknocker Brewery in Idaho Springs, Colorado, at The White Horse in London.

The Imperial Nut Brown Ale is a 9% abv strong ale brewed with pure maple syrup. It poured a clear reddish brown color with a beige head. Wonderful aroma of dark berries, maple syrup and balsamic vinegar(!). Very interesting! The mouthfeel was almost light. The flavor started out with a light syrupy sweet note and some toasted malts. Finish was fairly dry and short. Not much inbetween.

While I found the aroma very interesting, the beer - despite being 9% abv strong - was surprisingly light in body and lacking in taste. A bit boring actually.

A bottle of He'Brew Bittersweet Lenny's R.I.P.A brewed by the San Francisco based Shmaltz Brewing Company at Olde Saratoga Brewing in Saratoga Springs, New York, and enjoyed at the White Horse in London.

This brew is a 10% abv double IPA brewed with rye malt. It commemorates the 40th anniversary of the death of Lenny Bruce.

The beer pours a copper brown color with a massive beige head. Rich hoppy aroma with strong caramel and grainy notes, we're getting close to barley wine here! The mouthfeel is big too, with stingy carbonation and lots of malt sweetness. The taste strikes me as very close to an American Barley Wine, with strong bitter hops, a rich malt flavor, caramel in particular, and some citrus. The hop bite remains well into the finish along with a lingering sweetness. Yummy, this is another great beer from Shmaltz!

Dead Pubs (history)

A very decent menu, rather pricy, at this posh gastropub with many many beers. They have such a good range of beers, they've suggested matches for all the food here. At The White Horse, Parsons Green.

A bottle of the He'Brew Jewbelation Twelve brewed by the San Francisco based Shmaltz Brewing Company at Olde Saratoga Brewing in Saratoga Springs, New York, and enjoyed at the White Horse in London.

This is their twelfth anniversary beer, and what a beer: Jewbelation Twelve was brewed with 12 types of malt, 12 types of hops and is a hefty 12% abv.

The light at The Whiite Horse was fairly dim, as the photo shows, but this American Strong Ale type of beer seemed to pour a dark brown to black color with a small beige head. Great sweet syrupy aroma with notes of licorice, ripe fruits and roasted malts. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, with a fine carbonation. Taste picks up where the aroma left, with a rich spectrum of flavors - from chocolate, caramel and licorice to roasted malts and a nice hop bitterness to balance the sweetness. Also a nice warming sensation from the alcohol. A massive but smooth beer, with a long bittersweet aftertaste. An instant classic in my book!

Piglets having dnner at Parsons Green ... a lovely day out with the kids...

A bottle of Grottenbier Bruin at The White Horse in London.

Grottenbier Bruin or Biere des Grottes Brune is a 6,5% abv Abbey Dubbel which, as its name implies, has been cave-aged. The beer was created by the late Pierre Celis (1925-2011) and is brewed at Brouwerij St. Bernardus in Watou, Belgium.

It poured a clear, deep copper brown color with a large, beige head. It had a sweet aroma with notes of caramel and dark, ripe fruits, and hints of yeast. The mouthfeel was medium heavy with a creamy texture. The flavor started out with a good malt sweetness, brown sugar and that ripe fruitiness. Some yeast too. The finish was fruity with some bitterness.

Grottenbier Bruin reminded me of a roggenbier, in its rich, fruity malt character. A very good beer.

Some of the draught taps at this excellent pub for beer. (View of building.)

The side label on the bottle of Goose Island Demolition Ale proves that it was getting fairly old, it was bottled on February 26, 2010, so 15 months before I tasted it.

Some of the taps at The White Horse on Parson's Green in London.

The Kernel and Redemption are two up and coming craft breweries in London, recently they brewed a collaboration beer called Number One Strong Mild Ale. Now they've brewed a second, Number Two India Pale Ale, which was on tap at The White Horse when I visited.

While I found The Kernel/Redemption beer awesome, the Camra Gold Medal Winner - the Chiltern's Nut Brown Mild - just didn't cut it for me. It was a bland cask ale without much of a character. No wonder beer geeks have lost faith in Camra!

A bottle Perronelle’s Blush from Aspall Cider in Suffolk, England, at The White Horse in London.

I normally don't drink ciders, but here's the exception to the rule :-)

Perronelle’s Blush is a 5.7% abv apple cider made with a dash of blackberry liqueur. It poured a pinkish red color with a thin pink head. Nice fruity aroma, obviously apples, with hints of sweetness and berries - in fact it reminded me a bit of Crème de cassis. The flavor followed up the fruity aroma, but was a tad sweeter than I expected. The blackberry added a nice complexity to the sweetness though, so this was a very interesting cider. But not of the dry type.

Station roundel at Parsons Green, taken on 11th September 2022.

A bottle of Road Dog Scottish Porter from Flying Dog Brewery in Frederick, Maryland, at The White Horse in London.

Road Dog is a 6,0% abv Scottish Porter. It pours dark brown with a thin beige head. Aroma of roasted malts and chocolate. Mouthfeel is smooth. Flavor starts out very sweet, but with notes of dark chocolate and roasted malt to balance it. Nice bitter aftertaste with a lingering, sticky sweetness. Another good, but not great, beer from Flying Dog.

A very nice mushroom and truffle herb salad with broad beans and poached egg. At The White Horse, Parsons Green.

One of the most famous pubs in London and a favorite of the late Michael "Beer Hunter" Jackson, is The White Horse, affectionally known as the Sloany Pony, on Parsons Green in Fulham.

This was our first stop on this London visit, and we intended to sample the extensive beer menu here and enjoy a Beef Wellington dinner.

The only Kebab shop Gordon Ramsey will eat from in London. Tasty.

The back side label on the bottle of Worthington White Shield has the following to say about the beer:

Defiant survivor of 1820s IPA tradition, when only the most flavoursome beers endured the arduous voyage round the Cape of Good Hope. White Shield is the bottled live beer that matures with age.

Like fine cask beer, bottle conditioned White Shield boasts a small amount of William Worthington's feisty dual yeast, and will mature for at least 3 years.

To appreciate a sparkling clear glass of White Shield, the connoisseur pours with steady hand, leaving the precious last drops in the bottle.

A bottle of Morimoto Black Obi Soba Ale from Rogue Ales in Newport, Oregon, at The White Horse in London.

This 5% abv brew, classified as a Specialty Grain beer by RateBeer because of the use of buckwheat flour (soba-ko), poured a brown amber color with a large beige head. Aroma of sweet malts mixed with a wheat beer like note. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Flavor is sweet with some citrus notes but thinner than the aroma promised. Fairly short and bitter aftertaste.

A bottle of Hoss from Great Divide Brewing Company in Denver, Colorado, at The White Horse in London.

Hoss is a 6.2% abv lager brewed with rye to create a more complex malt character. It poured a clear golden orange tinged color with a thin head. Grainy and sweet malt aroma. Mouthfeel was light, the body fairly thin - typical of lagers. The flavor started out with a sweet malt character but also an unexpected fruitiness, apple perhaps? Short, crisp finish.

A nice beer from Great Divide, reasonably tasty to be so light and very easy to drink.

A bottle of Imperial Extra Double Stout 2003 Vintage from Harvey & Son in Lewes, England, at The White Horse in London.

Also known as Harvey's Imperial Stout or A le Coq Imperial Stout, this 9% abv imperial stout pours a pitch black color with a small beige head. Fairly sweet aroma but with a sour note. Mouthfeel was oily, absolutely no carbonation, with an acidic sting. The taste is a strange combination of sweet malts, chocolate, coffee and sourness - a bit like Haandbryggeriets Odins Tipple. I kind of like it, but it's not your run of the mill imperial stout because of the acidity.

The back label on the bottle of Traquair House Ale tells the story of the bear gates of Traquair House which has been closed since 1745, the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

The production of Traquair House Ale consists of an infusion mash, after which the wort is drawn off and boiled with the hops. The wort is cooled and pitched with bottom fermenting yeast under controlled temperature. It is then fermented in oak over a period of seven days. The beer is transferred into cold storage tanks or barrels and matured over a period of weeks. After maturation the beer is filtered prior to packing.

Parson's Green station, London, UK. Summilux DG 25mm f1.4 on Lumix G3. The lens is new and I'm still testing it and it continues to amaze me how much light it gathers given its size - this was handheld at 1/80th, ISO160.

A bottle of Mocha Porter from Rogue Ales in Newport, Oregon, at The White Horse in London.

This beer is a 5,3% abv American porter, brewed with Beeston chocolate malt. Hence its name.

It poured a pitch black color with a big beige head. Aroma was that of a good porter, with nice roastedness and just a hint of chocolate. Creamy mouthfeel but the body felt a bit thin. Flavor of coffee, roasted bitterness and dark chocolate. But, again, the beer feels a bit thin, especially in the aftertaste.

After managing to order a couple beers that turned out to be out of stock, I was offered some.. additional options. Here, then, is one of a very few bottles produced by the Brooklyn Brewery, of one of their Belgian style ales, fermented on wine lees, making for an absolutely outstanding creation: Crochet Rouge Sauvignon Blanc.

Truly heavenly. ^_^ My deepest thanks to the White Horse on Parsons Green for making that night one to remember for a long while.

A glass of Cutthroat Porter from Odell Brewing Co in Fort Collins, Colorado, at The White Horse in London.

Odell Cutthroat Porter is a 4,8% abv porter, inspired by the classic London porters. It poured a dark brown color with a beige head. The aroma had a nice coffee roasted character with hints of chocolate. Mouthfeel was medium to light with a soft, creamy carbonation. The flavor started out with a mild malt sweetness that balanced the bitterness of the roasted coffee. The finish was fairly dry, with lingering bitterness. A good, classic porter.

A bottle of Traquair House Ale from Traquair in Innerleithen, Scotland, at The White Horse in London.

The Traquair House Ale is a bottom fermented and filtered beer, but by no means lager like, that is fermented for seven days on oak barrels, reaching 7,2% abv.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a big beige head. Sweet syrupy aroma, with caramel and licorice notes. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Rich malty flavor, with caramel crystal malts dominating but also hints of oak acidity. A bit short aftertaste, still a very good beer but not rivaling their great Jacobite Ale.
