Parchment, not just for cooking!

Two bookmarks made with parchment craft on rainbow-tinted parchment. I made these to give away, but they came out so well that I kept them as examples to make more, and I use them myself. Background is a book bound in green moire silk. Photographed with morning sun shining on them through the window.

I couldn't decide which to use for Macro Mondays, this or the pencil jar. I went with this because I thought the theme was pencils, pens, erasers and PAPER. Turns out it was "and Paper Clips" Egads. 😊

Topped with ricotta cheese, fresh basil leaves and yellow low acid tomatoes.

"He will think that every wood is full of Faries, that a glassman sleeps on every table---so long as theres some parchment on it---that books are written by hand, and that the most famous illuminators paints with his left hand because his right is made of leather. He will think that strolling players breath fire and perform comic plays in every marketplace, that women always wear long dreses, And that soldiers stand at every gate."

View on black?? :)

Finally starting to get back on track with concepts and ideas for photos. I've spent since 8am this morning (it's now 6pm) curled up with the computer, printer and art book, leaving the room only to evacuate when the smell of burning books became too much, and to take these photos, and to buy glue (which is appalling) from the corner shop.

As I was sat by a footpath taking these, I heard my name mentioned by voices moving closer. I thought it was my family but it turned out it was Lucy and her family, talking about how I download music. When they saw me, they jumped out of their skins... and then they saw what I was doing! After much laughter and a chat, I think they're still okay with Lucy being my friend ;)

I also had my cousin and great cousin pass by, they thought it was hilarious too. Anyways.

Things are good, just because I haven't updated you in a hundred years on life. Busy with school and Fiddler on the roof rehearsals (I did get the crazy lady - did I mention that?) and I've had two weekends running where I've just done nothing but relax... well, I've filled the time by learning piano pieces and baking cakes and painting and taking photos and things like that... but to me, that's relaxing! Hah. Next weekend it'll be the autumn holidays - a well needed break, I think.

I've sent off my university applications - Cambridge, Nottingham, Edinburgh, St Andrews and Royal Holloway. Fingers crossed. It's all very scary. I need to write creative writing pieces for Nottingham and Royal Holloway, but I'm not certain exactly what they want just yet, so I'll see.

I went to see Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy last thursday, I thought it was brilliant - very cinematic and difficult to follow but really fascinating.

How are you? :)

Have a nice Sunday x

I wanted to try something new this year, so I folded this model from thin parchment paper whereas most of the time I use much thicker papers. Modern parchment paper has little in common with actual parchment which was made from animal skins but its name fits the theme of this model quite well.

Using thin paper allowed me to fold without a bone folder and to make the 128×24 grid in relatively small size. This model uses my Square Pixel Tessellation together with an additional gadget which I use to smoothly transition molecules from one side of the paper to the other.

A bit late but: Happy New Year 2017!

And if you want to go back in time, here is my New Year’s model from 2016.

Macro Mondays: handmade

This is a portion of a heart I created by hand from a sheet of parchment paper embossed using metal templates and tools. The edge is pierced with a needle tool and then torn along the "perforations." The heart is just over three inches in each direction, so I have included only a portion. This will make its way to a card; it is a "leftover" from Valentine's cards I made a few years ago. Every one of those hearts was made with the same outside heart template, but the centers were all different (25 or 30 of them).

Speeches of St. John Chrysostom. Parchment. 11th Century.

This splash of colour was seen on a local woodland walk recently.

It is not uncommon and is found on the the dead wood of broad-leaved trees. It is also a plant pathogen infecting peach trees.

My first tiptoe into layers, other than black. This is something I've been wanting to do for quite a while and just learned minutes ago, so I'm quite excited!

Many thanks to Ghostbones for this texture. He is so very generous to share his fantastic textures!

He calls this texture Hellfire, I call it Parchment, either way, it's a wonderful texture.

Leaves are the parchment that autumn writes its story upon. There are moments when the story is bright and colorful, bursting with life and joy, but as autumn's story draws to an end, the palette becomes more muted. A sadder, more melancholy note emerges. Soon winter will arrive to write a new story.

The Cathedral of St. Stephen and St. Sixtus in Halberstadt, a Protestant church, is considered one of the few large church buildings of the French cathedral scheme in Germany. The cathedral was built in 250 years (1236-1486) and is the 3rd successor building in the oldest diocese in central Germany (founded 804 / 814). Entering from the west portal, the elongated three-nave interior, the triumphal crucifix group above the rood screen, the high choir, the stained-glass windows,Neustadt's Chapel and St. Mary's Chapel are fascinating. Founded in the 11th century, the canonry (dissolved in 1806) did not introduce the Reformation until 1591 and has united Catholic and Protestant canons ever since. This ecumenism is to thank for the largest cathedral treasure still preserved in its original location: altars, reliquaries, manuscripts and Romanesque tapestries (the oldest in Europe). Since 2008, this cathedral treasure has been presented anew in the cathedral cloister. On 8 April 1945, the cathedral was badly hit by a bombing raid, but by 1955 it had been possible to remove the materials that endangered the fabric of the building. More recent highlights of the construction work on the cathedral are the casting of the Micha and Domina bells, the installation of the ridge turret on the nave and the installation of a new glass window in the southern transept.

ODC Kitchen Hack That Works

If you crumble your Parchment up into a ball then put it on your baking tray it will be much easier to handle. I do this every time I have to bake something in this way.

The Kalamazoo Nature Center begins somewhere near here on the left bank. The big field on the right is a toxic waste landfill.
