From objects as small as Newton's apple to those as large as a galaxy, no physical body is free from the stern bonds of gravity, as evidenced in this stunning picture captured by the Wide Field Camera 3 and Advanced Camera for Surveys onboard the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.
Here we see two spiral galaxies engaged in a cosmic tug-of-war — but in this contest, there will be no winner. The structures of both objects are slowly distorted to resemble new forms, and in some cases, merge together to form new, super galaxies. This particular fate is similar to that of the Milky Way Galaxy, when it will ultimately merge with our closest galactic partner, the Andromeda Galaxy. There is no need to panic however, as this process takes several hundreds of millions of years.
Not all interacting galaxies result in mergers though. The merger is dependent on the mass of each galaxy, as well as the relative velocities of each body. It is quite possible that the event pictured here, romantically named 2MASX J06094582-2140234, will avoid a merger event altogether, and will merely distort the arms of each spiral without colliding — the cosmic equivalent of a hair ruffling!
These galactic interactions also trigger new regions of star formation in the galaxies involved, causing them to be extremely luminous in the infrared part of the spectrum. For this reason, these types of galaxies are referred to as LIRGs, or Luminous Infrared Galaxies. This image was taken as part of as part of a Hubble survey of the central regions of LIRGs in the local Universe, which also used the Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) instrument.

‘Panic on the streets of London
Panic on the streets of Birmingham
I wonder to myself
Could life ever be sane again?
The Leeds side-streets that you slip down
I wonder to myself’
This song was written in reaction to the BBC DJ, Steve Wright playing the Wham! track "I'm Your Man," immediately after a news report on the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. Morrissey observed ‘the music that they constantly play, it says nothing to me about my life.’
This is the view from the top of Richmond Hill tunnel in Leeds. It’s a cityscape that has changed enormously over the years.
The very prominent building is the Department of Health and Social Security head office, known locally as ‘The Kremlin’. It opened in 1993 on a site that was previously occupied by the ‘Quarry Hill Flats’ which were built in the 1930s and at the time were the largest social housing complex in the UK. Here’s a link to an article about the current building. Leeds Quarry House: www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/go-inside-kremlin-lee...
By the 1980s the flats suffered considerable social and structural problems. As a child, I remember riding past them on the bus into town and they always seemed quite scary. Here’s a link to some pictures and a little about the history of the flats. www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/people/leeds-quarry-h...
On the extreme left of the image is Leeds Town Hall, whilst on the right is where stone trains from Rylstone would deposit their load at the Tilcon depot.
It’s an area where further development is taking place, with some very expensive looking apartments being built just out of view to the left.

Do you remember how I took photographs in Wampa's cave a long time ago? You know… I marked the spot on my GPS and I returned today to the cave back with my camera. I crawled into the cave in a small opening, and I noticed right away that taun were underdog role with Wampa (you know, Wampas primary source of food on Hoth is tauntauns). This situation continued…
I'm opening with this photograph a new series of shots from the Wampa's cave. What happens next? Stay tuned!
I know everyone has been advised to stock up on food and essentials for the next 2 weeks but the toilet paper panic buying is out of control. The aisles are bare in the grocery stores and Walmart. I am glad we always keep a good stock on hand.
The other day I saw someone selling a roll of toilet paper, on Facebook, for $40.00. It was a joke but maybe not in the days to come.
Stay safe and healthy everyone.

Feeling huge panic tonight after arriving home around 8pm. My heart is pounding and my hands won’t stop shaking. I’m not even drinking tonight. 8/21, the day this picture was taken, was also my mom’s birthday. She would have been 85.

As a creature of habit I always leave present buying to the last minute, so today I am heading into town to go on a mad spending spree. You could help me by letting me know what you want for Christmas.

Panic attacks, also known as anxiety attacks, are periods of intense fear or apprehension of sudden onset accompanied by at least four or more bodily or cognitive symptoms (such as heart palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, or feelings of unreality) and of variable duration from minutes to hours. Panic attacks usually begin abruptly and may reach a peak within 10 to 20 minutes but may continue for hours in some cases. Panic attacks are not dangerous and should not cause any physical harm.
The effects of a panic attack vary. Some, notably first-time sufferers, may call for emergency services. Many who experience a panic attack, mostly for the first time, fear they are having a heart attack or a nervous breakdown.Common psychological themes associated with panic attacks include the fears of impending death or loss of sanity; depersonalisation is relatively common.
Shortly after the cranes settled into the shallows for the evening, an adult Bald Eagle cruised purposefully down the middle of the river, causing complete pandemonium. I suspect the Eagle was looking for any weak, slow cranes that failed to take off in time. I took this photo mid-panic: there were shrieking cranes everywhere.
When out driving on country roads looking for wildlife, I always drive slowly. Sometimes my speedometer doesn’t get above 15 mph for over an hour of wandering. Part of my driving habits stem from not wanting to miss wildlife that normally does its best to hide from humans.
But also, it is a safety factor as many in the wild kingdom haven’t had a recent course in avoiding moving vehicles.
Sand hill cranes find gravel roads a delight early in the morning hours and often will come out of the ditches to walk where there are less obstacles.
Unfortunately, a colored pile of feathers occasionally marks the spot where they misjudged the speed of an approaching car.
Sometimes they see you coming but walk ahead of you, then begin to run as you gain on them. Finally, like these three, they panic and scatter like oat chaff in a strong breeze.
Panic is not limited to wildlife. I was curious after watching these take off in any direction they could to get away to see what was the largest loss of life due to panic in crowds.
In 1990, Muslims trudging to Mecca hold that record. Thousands of pilgrims were in a tunnel nearing Mecca when panic caused a huge stampede and an estimated 2,400 people died as a result, many of them suffocated while standing upright.

I stopped in Asheville, N.C. on my way home from Knoxville, Tenn. to hopefully get some shots of the homeless and buskers that frequent the streets. I noticed a couple of young men sitting in front of a restaurant and ask if I could get a few pictures and they told me thanks for asking, nobody ever ask, they just start taking pictures. They said sure it's okay. I ask if they play music and he smiled and pulled out a harmonica and started playing. As he bent over playing I noticed tattooed across his fingers ''DON'T PANIC'' and I started shooting frames. I gave them a tip and went away.
