WHAT:
As part of its Real Estate Luminaries Series, Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business will host “Commercial Real Estate Investment: Opportunity in an Economic Recovery.”
The event includes a conversation with Steven Roth, chairman of the board of Vornado Realty Trust, featuring Robert Steers, co-chairman and co-chief executive officer of Cohen & Steers, Inc.; Mike Kirby, co-founder, chairman, and director of research at Green Street Advisors; and Steven Wechsler, president and CEO of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT). The interview will be preceded by a panel discussion with Tobin Cobb, co-CEO of LNR Property LLC; Stephen Plavin, CEO of Capital Trust; and Robert O’Brien, partner and vice chairman, U.S. real estate services leader, Deloitte.
The series is co-sponsored by NAREIT and Georgetown McDonough’s Real Estate Finance Initiative.

Many people will have walked the streets of Newcastle without ever knowing what lies a few feet beneath them. The Victoria Tunnel runs beneath Newcastle from the Town Moor down to the Tyne. It was built in 1842 to transport coal from Leazes Main Colliery to riverside staithes ready for loading onto ships.
When it opened in 1835, the Leazes Main or Spital Tongues Colliery was one of the many coal mines around Newcastle. The industrial revolution was in full steam; demand for coal was high and the competition was great.
Initially, the coal was carried on carts from the colliery through the streets of Newcastle to the river, ready for shipping. This was slow and because of the annual charges involved expensive. Porter and Latimer, the colliery owners, therefore employed a local engineer, William E. Gilhespie, to construct an underground waggonway.
Permission to build the Tunnel was granted in 1838 and work started the following year. The Tunnel was probably dug in sections. The engineers would have excavated a shaft down to the right level, then tunneled out to link up with the next section. The walls of the Tunnel were lined in stone and a double brick arch supported the roof. It is approximately 7ft 5in (2.3m) high and 1.9m wide. This was just large enough to accommodate custom built chaldron waggons.

The great east window of York Minster is currently being restored by the York Glaziers Trust. The major conservation has restored much clarity to the scenes, returning them to a closer approximation of their original appearance and legibility with sensitive releading, removing heavy repair leads that had been introduced over the years. As of 2016 the work is two-thirds completed with the entire Apocalypse section of the window reinstalled along with the topmost traceries. The remainder including the final section depicting scenes from Genesis will hopefully be back in place in 2018.
The east window is the World's largest expanse of medieval stained glass, filling most of the east wall of the cathedral. It is divided into over a hundred square panels, most of which illustrate scenes from the Apocalypse, with a shorter sequence from Genesis above. The window was made by John Thornton of Coventry and his workshop and dates from 1405-8.
York Minster is England's largest medieval cathedral and almost impossible to do justice to. It has an awesome presence that cannot fail to impress.
Uniquely the cathedral was spared the ravages of the Civil War that decimated the medieval art of most English cathedrals and churches, and it thus possesses the largest collection of medieval glass in Britain throughout most of it's vast windows.
