My happy hour

Had some time to take macro shots this morning. Hoping for bee shots but saw hardly any bees. Spotted this baby anole as I was about to leave the park. Lucky to get a sharp focus on the eye considering it was so close to the ground.

Fifteen minutes before this scene unfolded, I was regretting waking up and wishing I was still in bed. African sahara sands are filtering the atmosphere, and after a nice storm last night I was all but certain this was going to be a good (if not, great) morning ... and then, nothing.

Slowly but surely small pockets of color started to dot the sky ... and then, this happened.

with precision and fury and deafening sound

Soon followed by thunder, a clap from the gods

For a moment in time, mother nature’s at odds.

This was a sunrise for my highlight reel.

Went to a small wetland this week. Found lots of white birds .. and one roseatte spoonbill ..foraging. Not much water so the birds were feeding so close together. Every so often a fight broke out.

I was still half asleep when I bolted out the door this morning ... this made it all worth while.

A rowboat, a sail boat, a catamaran or a yacht. It doesn't matter.

A boat = freedom. And "Liberty" is the perfect name for this intracoastal commuter.

If I were a cloud

I’d choose a tropical sky

Drifting above oceans

Toward the heavens so high

I’d admire my reflection

In the deep blue sea

Creating magical shapes

For all the world to see

I’d carry rain to the mountains

And shade to the shore

Traverse countries and continents

Mysteries to explore

If I were a cloud

I would fly

Sky high.

This evening's sunset was one for the highlight reel, as the most vibrant colors lit up the entire inlet on Hutchinson Island. No smoke and mirrors, no tricky filters or photoshop ... just mother nature at her finest.

In a tropical light,

The colors are pure

The sky indigo blue,

The water azure

The sun is golden,

The palm trees green

Together they're magic,

The view, serene.

Another crazy night of storm chasing last night. I was awakened at 2am by continuous lightning strikes strobing through the bedroom window, so I set off in search of the storm. I did not have to go very far, as the sky lit up like this for the better part of two hours.

A potent concoction of electricity, humidity, and moisture made for an interesting pre-sunrise sky this morning. The lightning strikes were off in the distance, so I wasn't really at risk - but the strikes were non stop.

Bridge Road connects the beach town of Hobe Sound to Jupiter Island, and right before you cross the bridge you'll discover a tree canopy that covers the road. You could easily mistake this for Bent Banyan Way, shared in a previous post here - but this is a completely different location, in a different town.

Down by the banks of the lazy river,

Watching the world go by.

Pirates, trysts, and crazy folk,

Like a scene from Catcher In The Rye.

It’s but a brief moment in time,

As the sun will set soon.

Cue the lunatic fringe,

And those who howl at the moon.

It's pretty cool that we live just an hour away from the bright lights and big cities of Miami and Fort Lauderdale - yet call this sleepy little hamlet home. Stuart, Florida has rightfully earned the title of 'Happiest Seaside Town' in America. This accolade was bestowed on the town this year by the readers of Coastal Living Magazine.

It's been a little more than two weeks since I headed out the door with camera in hand. When writers can't find the words they call it writer's block, and I think for the first time in more than 5 years - I have the photographic version of that. Don't get me wrong, there is still plenty of photo op's here to inspire me - I think I just needed to slow down, sleep in and skip a few sunrises and catch up on some much needed sleep. Anyway it's good to be back, even if I did only venture out to our backyard for sunrise this morning.

Floating in a bed of clouds.

Location: Palm City, Florida

The pre-sunrise sky over Hutchinson Island was intense this morning. There was no rain, stormy weather, or thunder - but the horizon was lit up by lightning strike after lightning strike for the better part of an hour. It literally looked like the town of Stuart was under attack from mortar fire and ground-to-air missiles.
