In the Gaza refugee camp where most homes lack indoor plumbing and heating, the time-honored Arab tradition of gathering around a "hatab" fire is frequently practiced during the winter season. The youth who often complain of being cramped up in their small homes, are particularly fond of making outdoor fires with scrap wood and shrubs located throughout the camp.
Suffering and deprivation is apparent throughout the Gaza refugee camp where the vast majority of families live on less than $40 USD per month. The putrid odor from overground sewage in rat-infested allies, coupled with the dusty deserts surrounding the refugee camp make living a daily challenge for residents of the camp. Sewage and waste water accumulates in the overground sewage systems throughout the camp. These sewage "lines" in the camp collect from holes in the floors of the homes or dump directly into ditches that run beneath each home in the camp. Despite being plagued by severe poverty, residents of this refugee camp are regularly forced to pay Jordanian authorities exboritant amounts to have the excreta/sewage pumped out of their homes into special septic tanks.

Around 800 Palestinian supporters held a lively protest including die-ins on the road outside the Israeli embassy in London to voice their anger at the kidnap, torture and brutal murder of 16 year old Palestinian boy Mohammed Abu Khdair, seen as revenge for the earlier murder of three Jewish teenagers. The child had petrol poured down his throat and he was set alight whilst still alive.

This chin chain comes from the Southall Collection, a major collection of Palestinian Dress dating from 1900-1930. It includes garments and accessories worn by nomadic Bedouin people as well as men, women and children living in Ramallah and Bethlehem. This silver chin chain or iznaq dates back to the 19th century from the Bethlehem and Jerusalem area. At the two ends of the chain hang triangular white metal amulets called herz. Many silver crescent shaped talismans hang from the chain along with amulets known as the 'hand of Fatimah' after the daughter of the Prophet Mohammed. Both these and the various glass beads were all thought to protect the wearer from the evil eye. This chain would have been suspended from the earflaps of the headdress such as the shatweh, smadeh and saffeh, to hang below the chin.

I remember his home, so poor, and his silent dignity.
Palestinian Muslims praying outside the entrance to the Al Aqsa mosque compound in the Old City of Jerusalem. Entrance to the mosque area was restricted by Israeli police to prevent possible violent disturbances. Nineteen policemen and twenty four Palestinians were earlier injured during demonstrations against Israeli excavations near the Al Aqsa mosque compound in the Old City of Jerusalem.
