Western Ghats - The UNESCO World Heritage Site - and is one of the eight "hottest hot-spotsof'' biological diversity in the world ...

WONDERFUL FACTS - The Western Ghats, also known as Sahyadri (Benevolent Mountains), are a Mountain range that covers an area of 140,000 square km in a stretch of 1,600 km - parallel to the western coast of the Indian peninsula, traversing the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the eight "hottest hot-spots" of biological diversity in the world.

It is sometimes called the Great Escarpment of India. It contains a large proportion of the country's flora and fauna, many of which are only found in India and nowhere else in the world.

According to UNESCO - the Western Ghats are older than the Himalayas.

The beautiful pillar rocks of Kodaikanal in the Palani mountains look breathtakingly scenic and mesmerizing. A deep blue clear sky covered in white cotton like clouds which are engulfing half the green mountains. A Hindu temple sits on the plain surface of this luxurious green vegetation on the mountain. The view was so lovely that I stood there just feeling the beauty and enjoying every bit of time I spent there.

From the light through the half dried yellow leaves, white milky water from the waterfall seems to be coming out, falling on the steps, big and small, formed by the rocks. The green leaves on the surrounding trees are like mesmerized onlookers watching this beautiful sight in the Palani hills of Kodaikanal.

This lotus looking cactus is very common in tropical countries. I came across this on a way to Arulmigu Kurinji Andavar Temple in Kodaikanal. Kodaikanal is known for its rich flora. This cactus was very green and its leaves are thick as they filled with water and each leaf has serrated edge and a serrated line in its center.

The main population of this bird is found in the high elevation plateaus (above 1500m) areas of the Nilgiris, Palani Hills, Biligirirangans (Bellaji and Honnametti) and Kannan Devan Hills. They prefer areas with high leaf litter and undergrowth in open shola grassland habitats. The density was about 2.8 ha per pair during the breeding season. It is a highly parochial bird and no local movements other than dispersal of young has been noted. To the north, it occurs in the Kudremukh National Park and the Bababudan Hills and south to the Ashambu Hills. Some old records of the species from Maharashtra and Sri Lanka[8] have been considered dubious

. Munnar is a town and hill station located in the Idukki district of the southwestern Indian state of Kerala, India.Munnar is situated at around 1,600 metres (5,200 ft) above mean sea level, in the Western Ghats mountain range. Most of the native flora and fauna of Munnar have disappeared due to severe habitat fragmentation resultant from the creation of the plantations. However, some species continue to survive and thrive in several protected areas nearby, including the new Kurinjimala Sanctuary to the east, the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Manjampatti Valley and the Amaravati reserve forest of Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary to the north east, the Eravikulam National Park and Anamudi Shola National Park to the north, the Pampadum Shola National Park to the south and the proposed Palani Hills National Park to the east.

Endemic species

These protected areas are especially known for several threatened and endemic species including Nilgiri Thar, the grizzled giant squirrel, the Nilgiri wood-pigeon, elephant, the gaur, the Nilgiri langur, the sambar, and the neelakurinji (that blossoms only once in twelve years). WONDERFUL FACTS - An Extinct Species Of Penguins Was Nearly 7-Feet Tall ... 😮

The biggest penguins around nowadays are emperor penguins, measuring a respectable 4 feet in height.

However, 37 million years ago, a species known as Palaeeudyptes klekowskii, or colossus penguins, roamed Antarctica. They weighed about 250 pounds and stood about 6 feet, 6 inches tall, which is the height of the average NBA player. Unfortunately, like modern penguins, these colossus penguins could neither fly nor, presumably, dunk. But it's still fun to imagine a penguin going one-on-one with - LeBron James 😄

‘Kodaikanal’ literally means, ‘the gift of the forest’. The most inimitable of things certainly, are natural. Cradled in the southern crest of the upper Palani Hills, in the Western Ghats, 120 kms from Madurai, Kodaikanal is located 2133 m above sea level. Special efforts are being made by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department to prevent the commercialisation of this scenic beauty.

Kodai is very chilly now. The best time to visit Kodaikanal is in May. But in Madurai-just 120 km from Kodaikanal -it is very hot now in March.

In South India, not far from Madurai, there is a charming town, Kodaikanal (7000 ft, 2133m), nestled among pine trees in the Palani hills. People flock there during summer to escape the heat of the plains.

On the way to Ooty while returning from Kodaikanal.

Forests on the top of Palani Hills of Kodaikanal are the most beautiful

forests I have seen in India.

Usually a fish will turn away before it gets close to the camera. But this big Eyestripe Surgeonfish just kept on coming.

The sunflower field spread against the beautiful background of the blue hills enticed me... the clouds added to it...

A shot from my road trip to Palani, Tamil Nadu.

eyestripe surgeonfish

Sometimes I wonder where I've been,

Who I am,

Do I fit in.

Make believein' is hard alone,

Out here on my own.

We're always provin' who we are,

Always reachin'

For that risin' star

To guide me far

And shine me home,

Out here on my own.

Lyrics: Nikka Costa - On My Own

I think the Eyestripe Surgeonfish is one of the most attractive of the surgeonfishes. Stripes, dots and an interesting color palette make it stand out.
