Did you know that ‘repoussé’ is a technique of shaping patterns in relief on metal by hammering/pressing metal on the reverse side?

I’m posting out of order, since this is the last page of my Counting Sheep Journa and I have others I haven’t posted yetl.

But, this was done for the latest Sketching Stuff challenge so I posted it today.

I had intended to paint something fairly realistic, then, on Second Thought I decided to do something totally different than anything else in the journal.

As usual, it’s difficult to get a good photograph or scan of a metallic painting, but it looks pretty cool in real life.

Thank you to Mary Roff for this fabulous watercolor sketchbook. I’ve really enjoyed working in it.

Did you know animals with more than two horns, such as the Jacob sheep, which can have up to six, are called polycerate?

For the first time in decades, I’ve gone more than a month without drawing or painting. It always amazes me how quickly you can lose that sure touch, that feeling of looking at a reference and thinking I know how I want to paint that. Not that what I ‘know’ always works that way I think it will, but that feeling is gone and it’s going to take a while to get it back, I think.

As with most things, the way through that is to just keep going and it will come back.

One of the downsides to doing so many reviews is that it is often difficult to use up sketchbooks I've started. I reviewed one of Mary Roff's handmade watercolor sketchbook back in 2019, and even though I decided I was going to make a project of painting sheep in it, I'm only 10 pages in.

Did you know that lambs and ewes can recognize each other's bleats, and that studies have shown they can recognize up to 50 faces, both sheep and human, and remember them for up to two years?

I'm posting prompts out of order. Several of my prompt responses this month will show up as examples in reviews, so I’m jumping over those.

I meant to really exaggerate the rump, and use an entirely different style. Then I got caught up in painting the shadows and ended up doing something entirely different. I blame this demanding little lamb, who's riding his mother's back.

#sketchingstuff Second April.Challenge 2023.

Sketching the first thing you see can present some challenges. The first thing I saw was my cell phone, all dark and really not that interesting. But then I saw the reflection of the curtains, and figured what the heck. So I used black paper to paint my black phone with its black screen, and faint reflections. True to life, I added smudges on the screen.

Can’t say I’m happy with it, but it was quick and a definite challenge.

Did you know there really isn't such a thing as a pizza fish? However, there are recipes for adding cheese and various item to fish fillets and some people put fish on their pizzas, so the connection is clear! (fish on pizza!!! Yuck! Spit! Spit! Ack!)

This is another piece done in my new Mary Roff handmade multimedia journal. She gave me a list of papers used but not the order, so I'm guessing that this was sulphite or vellum. It's a translucent paper and you'd think the color would slide right off. It does take a few minutes to dry, but once it does the color stays put. The reason there are two photos here is that I drew this on the front and colored it on the back, so I'm showing both sides.

Sorry, I didn’t have time to look up a fact for today.

While painting sheep is not brand new to me, I’ve never tried painting in the Cubism style, and it’s something I’ve wanted to play with. I’m not sure I got the multiple viewpoint right, but meanwhile I learned a little about cubism. Mainly, that I don’t enjoy painting that style all that much, lol.
