Bagan (formerly Pagan) is an ancient city located in the Mandalay Region of Myanmar . From the 9th to 13th centuries, the city was the capital of the Kingdom of Pagan, the first kingdom to unify the regions that would later constitute modern Myanmar. During the kingdom's height between the 11th and 13th centuries, over 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were constructed in the Bagan plains alone, of which the remains of over 2200 temples and pagodas still survive to the present day.

This is in my opinion the most impressively shaped and positioned stones at Castlerigg in Cumbria. Wikipedia says "In his study of the stone circles of Cumbria, archaeologist John Waterhouse commented that the site was "one of the most visually impressive prehistoric monuments in Britain."[4]
"Every year, thousands of tourists travel to the site, making it the most visited stone circle in Cumbria. This plateau forms the raised centre of a natural amphitheatre created by the surrounding fells and from within the circle it is possible to see some of the highest peaks in Cumbria: Helvellyn, Skiddaw, Grasmoor and Blencathra."
Thatbyinnyu Temple is a famous temple located in Bagan (formerly Pagan), built in the mid-12th century during the reign of King Alaungsith. It is adjacent to Ananda Temple. Thatbyinnyu Temple is shaped like a cross, but is not symmetrical. The temple has two primary storeys, with the seated Buddha image located on the second storey.

Latin for 'Gods feed the Ravens.
I am very lucky to have some Ravens who sit in trees around my house from time to time. These birds are rare in my part of the world as old superstitions nearly had them wiped out completely by overzealous medieval hunters. I was taking this pic as one of them started to call out, fitting considering the theme of this image. The saying is quite an old one, related to battlefields.

Infrared shot of the ruins of the 12th centruy Norman church in Knowlton, Wimborne Basset, Dorset, The church is situated inside a Neolithic henge monument. I've shot the location several times before, but never before with people there - as I arrived, there was a group of 20 or so Druids gathering for a ceremony. I grabbed this shot as 2 of them were making their way to the ruins to begin

Not many parish churches stand in ruins, and fewer still occupy sites associated with prehistoric rituals. Four thousand years separate the main late Neolithic earthwork at Knowlton and the Norman church that stands at its centre. The earthwork itself is just one part of a landscape which is one of the great Neolithic and Bronze Age ceremonial complexes in southern England.
This Norman church, which was built in the 12th century, is situated at the centre of a Neolithic ritual henge earthwork. The unusual pairing of the henge and the church symbolises the transition from pagan to Christian worship.
The 12th century church is built of stone and flint, and the line of the roof remains clearly visible on its eastern face.
It was in use until the 17th century, serving a now vanished hamlet by the riverside. Its Norman origins are evident from the plain round arch leading into the east end or chancel, and from the round-headed arches of the arcade dividing the nave from the north aisle. The south door also looks Norman.
The tower at the west end is 15th century, and is built of flint with bands of stone; the line of the church roof is clearly visible on its eastern face. At the east end of the north aisle there appears to have been a lady chapel.

August: Sturgeon Moon
August has the Full Sturgeon Moon because of the large numbers of lake sturgeon in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain. The fish was essential for Native American tribes in the area.
The Celts called it Dispute Moon and Lynx Moon, and the Anglo-Saxons the Grain Moon. Other English names include Corn Moon and Lightning Moon.

Originally, it was known as Mont Tombe. There must have been a stone or a megalithic monument for pagan worship, followed by two oratories, one dedicated to St. Symphorian, the other to St. Stephen, built by hermits in the sixth and seventh centuries, as well as the Revelatio ecclesiae sancti Michaelis archangeli reports in Monte Tumba. Following this first Christianization of Mount Tombe, was erected an oratory in honor of the Archangel Saint Michael in 708 (709 for the dedication), as indicated by the Annals of Mont-Saint-Michel written at the beginning of Twelfth century. Aubert, bishop of Avranches , installed a community of twelve canons on the site to serve the sanctuary and welcome the pilgrims. It was at this time that the mountain welcomed, to the east of the rock, the first villagers who fled the Viking raids. This first habitat had to shelter the different trades necessary for the construction of the first sanctuary: stonemasons, masons, stonemasons and carpenters. Then he had to welcome the laity to supply the religious community. "Despite the many reconstructions that have gradually shaped the village we know today, the original core of the village is still noticeable: it corresponds to an area characterized by a relatively complex parcel organization and a tangle of buildings. served by winding lanes ".

Quoting Wikipedia:
"In Norway, stave churches were built during the transition period from pagan religion to Christianity, around the 12th and 13th centuries. On these buildings you can find many pagan symbols such as dragon heads, Odin depictions, pagan symbols in carvings. The old Nordic faith and the new Christian faith existed in parallel for two hundred years. The Church accepted the original pagan elements probably because much of the symbolism and narratives could be reinterpreted in Christian terms."
