In today's posts of my Pan-American Trek we travel about 400 km south on Mexico Highway 85 through Matlapa, Jacala, Actopan, and ending in Pachuca in the state of Hildago, Mexico. This is my first exposure to the vast slums in central American cities, which tend to be hillside communities where power, water, and roads are not as abundant as they are in the valley. I was deeply moved by the poverty. I was also shocked to find that few pictures exist of these slums online. These are places and times that need to be documented.
PS Someone wrote a story about my Trek.

Sometimes Photoshop makes mistakes while constructing panoramas that end up more interesting than the "correct" version... The hillside communities of Pachuca, Hildago, Mexico.

Located in downtown Pachuca, a city founded on silver mining, in the XVII century the lot was used for mining purposes. Later in 1746 a bull ring was built on it called the "Plaza de Toros de Avendaño". During the war of independance the sight saw several battles, but the city was mostly saved. Later in 1841 it was the "Plaza de las Diligencias" (Stagecoach Plaza) because regular runs of the stagecoach left from this point to Mexico City. Shortly after that it became filled with markets and it was called the "Plazuela del Carbón" from all the coal sold on this site. Around 1869 the final changes begun to transform it into what it s today.
