During the first-ever Philly Free Streets event on Sept. 24, 2016, Public Engagement staff from the Philadelphia Water Department educated residents about the Fairmount Dam Fishway, a special piece of infrastructure that helps anadromous fish like shad, striped bass, sturgeon and others access Schuylkill River habitat and spawning grounds located above the dam at the Water Works. Residents and visitors taking advantage of 10 miles of open streets stopped at the fishway, also called a fish ladder, to learn about the river and the Green City, Clean Waters program.
