This is my old high school, Prince of Wales Collegiate, or PWC as we all called it.
This was my school between September of 2000 and June of 2003. For those of you who live in Ontario or America, high school in Newfoundland is Grade 10 to Grade 12. Also, it's called "Collegiate", not "Collegiate Institute". As I've said before, that would be like calling it a school school. Ontario has some weird naming conventions.
This is where I was on the morning of September 11th, 2001. I was walking around the halls on the ground floor at recess, when John Kennedy and Ryan Richards, who had been pipping off and watching TV at home, came up to me and a few of my friends.
I have to pause the story there, because it appears my memory had a blip. I always thought they came up to us at recess, but I don’t think that makes sense. The first plane hit the North Tower at 8:46am New York time, which would have been 10:16am Newfoundland time. That would have been the end of recess, and they would not have been able to get back to school in time to tell us during recess, even if they drove a car.
So it must have been lunchtime. By 12:00pm Newfoundland time, both towers had collapsed. Now the timeline of my experience makes a bit more sense.
Anyway, I'm going to truncate that story because I've typed it in the description box of previous photos. And because I started typing this story this morning, and now it's 8:28pm and I want to go do something else with the rest of my evening.
This is where (or at least when) I got into several bands that I've loved ever since, such as Nirvana, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne, Rush, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Who.
This is also where I was going when I had my first bands, although only one of my bandmates went to PWC with me.
This is where I had...well...anyway, this is where I was a teenage boy surrounded by teenage girls. Man, that was a great time, marked by much fantasizing and just as much having my dreams crushed. To some extent, I miss those days, but I sure as hell don't miss the feeling of getting my heart broken every time I saw a girl I liked holding hands or making out with some other guy even though I never made my feelings known or made any effort whatsoever. Oh, being a teenager.
That classroom on the upper floor on the right was my math class for all three years. I think the lack-of-windows to the left was the bathroom.
In that school, I took regular math, remedial math (yeah, I said it), music, basic science, three years of biology, earth science, chemistry, literature, geography, economics, gym, and a bunch of other run-of-the-mill courses. Community and Leadership was unconventional, at least in name...how ill-suited to my personality!
Anyway, that's enough for now.
