Another in my line of research maps. This one illustrates the geographic distribution of Public Works Administration grants to institutions of higher education in the New Deal.
This comes from a large and hard-won dataset created from archival material in the NARA II facility (aka "The Deuce"), Record Group 135. Hawaii and Alaska did receive some grants, but I did not include them in this map. Puerto Rico received PWA money, but not for higher education.
A clear choice for making the grants legible was making different-sized dots. However, there were so many that once the dots were sized in a way that made sense (eg, so that if one grant total was ~2x another, its dot was ~2x in area [not diameter]), the whole map was too cluttered to differentiate between dots. Thus, I created assigned different colors to help distinguish and reinforce the dot sizes. I think it works ok, but I'm open to other suggestions.
Clearly, the big money went to the eastern half of the country. This was largely where the largest and best public universities were (only 3 private schools received PWA funds). The institutions that received more than $1M were the University of Washington, Medical College of Virginia, Medical College of the State of South Carolina, University of Missouri, University of Alabama, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Illinois, Wisconsin, Penn State, North Carolina, Michigan State, Minnesota, Purdue, Howard, Michigan, Indiana, and Hunter College.
It remains to be seen how this related to population distribution.
NOTE: Michigan and surrounding states look a little weird because the shapefile represents the state boundaries in the lakes, rather than at water's edge.

This 1939 courthouse now functions as a government center for the county, and court is held in the nearby Judge Steve Herrera Judicial Complex. Located at the intersection of Grant and Johnson, it was styled somewhat to look like the Palace of the Governors. The Pueblo Revival structure was a Public Works Administration (PWA) project.
