A Wabtec C44ACM rebuild leads a Union Pacific GSTUCT 03 grain empty less than 1/2 a mile from the 6799 ft. summit at Wahsatch, Utah on May 6, 2023. The Tulare, California - Carleton, Nebraska "PSR monster" had 230 cars (30 loads, 200 empties), 9,460 tons, and 14,975 ft. of train, 1x1x1 DPU. The empty grain hoppers are hidden from view at the rear of the train.
No, I wouldn't consider this a brown season shot. But at the current time of this posting, Illinois has plunged into stick season. Also, digging back into the archives reveals just how depressing Class 1 PSR railroading really is. So with that in mind and the fact I missed ETTS Tuesday, I present you with this offering.
It was going to be a bitterly cold morning in the Upper Midwest. But with promise of blue skies and blue power, I ventured out with Erik and Matt in search of H20. What at first was shaping up to be a single shot chase near La Crosse, ended up being a short chase much further up river between Frontenac and Lakeview. Up ahead, 281 was having serious issues with the cold. As such, H20 wasn't set free until the afternoon. A frustrating day to say the least. I didn't know it at the time, but this would be the last Blue and Gold I would see running.
A duo of ACes take MEWOL-07 south down the BNSF Mykawa Sub through the center of Pearland.
The effects of PSR are evident here, as MEWOL, the Houston-Brownsville manifest, used to be a mid-afternoon staple on the BNSF out of Houston, but it has since become a morning run, sometimes even before sunrise. And of course, the lead unit resembles UP's new habit of not washing their locomotives.

With Precision Scheduled Railroading, traffic is frequently combined to reduce train starts and cost. This train was once the hotshot Burlington Northern train 4 pre-merger between South Seattle and Chicago. With PSR in place on BNSF, it now has a large slug of manifest on the head end and drags across the railroad at much less than expedited speed.
The only upside is the extra traffic on the train fills out Trinidad Loop in eastern Washington much better.
On June 10, 2023, I photographed one of the most colossal Z trains I've ever witnessed, passing through Echo, Utah. UP's ZG2OAB 09 (Global 2, Illinois - Oakland, CA) had eight GE locomotives (6x2 DPU), 139 loads, 0 empties, 10,398 tons, 10,603 feet of train. Many of the containers were ONE refrigerated units, shipping prime midwestern beef to Japan.
Throwing it back to a much better time on the NS. Just before they started to take a "PSR" turn for the worst, NS seemed to have supplied a finale of cool power in 2018. A large variety of leasers, including GECX and PRLX variants made frequent appearances on the NS Lake Erie District. One of the most memorable consists that year happened on this warm August day. MEC 3402 made its way onto the point of westbound intermodal 23K, and the trailing power just added to the show. A PRLX AC60, a NS Dash 9 standard cab, and a couple GECX Dash 8s all trail the Pan Am SD40-2.
A blanket of gray covered the Lake Erie shore this day, but a small break in those clouds opened up just in time to light up this epic consist. I really felt like I probably used up any luck I'd have for a while on this shot, but man was it worth it. 23K leaves the Ashtabula Towers apartment building behind and pounds the diamond with the Youngstown line as they make their way west toward Cleveland.

A former CEFX "bluebird" SD9043MAC leads NS 153 screaming past the old Southern station in Seneca, SC on their run down the Piedmont. This was the beginning of the end as far as NS being an interesting road to photograph, as hoards of second hand power was acquired to get trains moving over the road. These were later rebuilt into SD70ACUs, many of which are currently stored due to PSR and an attempt to slash to prosperity.
CSX Grafton WV based local L154 drifts through the interlocking at MO Tower in Clarksburg, WV passing by some remains of the PSR era a few years prior. When CSX went on their all out blitz to minimize their trackage footprint throughout the system, the small yard in Clarksburg was among those removed. Even years after the work was completed, much of the remains are still sitting off to the side of the mainline. Dwarf signals stand in place, protecting removed tracks.
Two trains for the price of one... I want a refund.
A splitter train for the harbor rolls through Fullerton with just over fifteen-thousand feet of stacks between the front and rear knuckles. The first half of this PSR master piece and Alameda Corridor clogger is the Logistics Park, KS to Pier T Long Beach, CA (TTI/Hanjin), while the second half is from the same origin point but that half is destined for West Basin Container on the Los Angeles side.

SOLD! - In the fading light, recently rebuilt NS 4490 leads 16 SD70ACUs on their ride out of town. All have been hasty remarked 'PRLX' and are heading to one of Progress Rail's locomotive storage facilities.
Union Pacific's Oakland - North Platte intermodal drags slowly through Henefer, Utah late in the day on Oct. 28, 2022. The train had 176 cars, with stacked containers at each end with mixed manifest traffic in the middle.

Description:
The pulsar PSR B0833-45 or Vela Pulsar is a radio, optical, X-ray- and gamma-emitting pulsar associated with the Vela Supernova Remnant in the constellation of Vela. He is approx. 815 +/- 100 light-years away and with his 11,000 years comparatively young pulsar. It completes one rotation every 0,08933 seconds, it means 11.19 rotation each second.

As I was child, I always hate to go to sleep and I always wish, when I gove up, I will became a astronomer. Well, I didn’t become but the fascination of universe has don’t leave me at all.
The idea of project „Pulsar“ was, to visualize as art, the screams out of deepest space of this bizarre space objects. If you like to know more about Puslars, ask Google😉
Then I grabed audio recordings of Pulsar sounds, a subwoofer, av receiver, colour and my cam. And the results you see here. I hope you like it.
To be continued…

I'm always happy to shoot any sort of non-Armour Yellow power leading down the UP Kansas Sub, and when I heard from a few people about this pair of CSX units headed my way, I was happy to go out for them. Here, the CSX 55 (in YN2, no less!) and 5227 are leading the SESAM-11 by MacVicar Ave. on the ex-RI GSR in Topeka.
Given the "S" symbol, this was an empty windmill flat train that was headed to Amarillo, TX. However, PSR dropped this group of hoppers bound for Optima, OK onto the head end, making it look like a very different train.
Bnsf 4173 leads a eastbound stack train. A typical junk train with Auto's up front. The low prioty train are now being found with more auto's and some freight mixed in. This one on the Bnsf Marceline Sub near La Plata Mo.

UP 8004 is stopped between Celilo and Biggs OR. behind and stopped eastbound train at Biggs. UP will have 4 eastbound trains stacked in the double track section between The Dallas and Biggs, all waiting for a PSR westbound, who is struggling to set out a bad order 140 cars from the headend! There is nothing “Precision” nor “Scheduled” in this type of operations!
A manifest? Nahhh... it's a stack train. Don't let the first 10 cars or so fool ya, this is an eastbound stack train coming off of the Golden State Route in Topeka, and those are just tacked on because they were headed the same direction.
Here, a pair of the now-ubiquitous GEVOs roll through the curves at CP Z068 along their way to Kansas City, and points east.
