World War I was the first conflict to harness the power of propaganda, and the British proved adept from the outset, playing particular emphasis on atrocity propaganda that portrayed the enemy as brutes as a way of mobilising public opinion. The Americans took note, and the imagery was notched up still further on the United States’ joining the war in 1917.
Josef Goebbels took further note when he became Nazi Germany’s Head of Propaganda from 1933. The Big Lie was his speciality.
A great alleged WWII propaganda poster from the Nazis, depicting what America would do to culture, apparently. When I win the lottery, I'm absolutely having one constructed in my yard.
As always in China, all heroic deeds and military successes will be related to the Communist Party. Politics! Even here, were the 88th Division, one of the crack units of the National Government under Chiang were employed without any Communist fighter involved, the propaganda is used. Not long before 1937, the 88th division was used to fight the Communists in Jiangxi province which makes the propaganda even more ridiculous. All achievement were done here without the Communists. Shanghai was under the firm control of the National Government, Communists had been hunted down previously. The few remaining Communists in Shanghai had no influence of the battle.
In general, the vast majority of all fighting was obviously done by the large Chinese army which was under the command of the National Government (Chiang Kai-shek) while the rather small Communist force were usually active in the rear area of the Japanse controlled area, only occassionally fighting at the frontlines, .
Joint Trust Warehouse or Sihang Warehouse is now a museum, located along Guangfu Road along Suzhou Creek.
Fighting took place here from October 26 to November 1, 1937 during the battle for Shanghai as part of WW2.
The 432 defenders (also known as Eight Hundred Heroes) of the warehouse held out against numerous waves of Japanese forces and covered Chinese forces retreating west during the Battle of Shanghai. These men belonged to the 88th Division, a German-trained crack division of the National Government of Chiang Kai-shek under the command of Xie Jinyuan. The division had fought previously against the Communists in Jiangxi province.
In total 10 Chinese were killed and 37 men wounded.
The successful defense of the warehouse provided a morale-lifting consolation to the Chinese army.

The N. Korean regime spares no effort to make sure everybody gets brainwashed every day. Even people working in the fields cannot escape the nonsense propaganda.

Happy tuesday to you all.....
Propaganda was a disco\pub in Wudaokou (Haidian district) where there was my university.
It was a bit smelly, with a low ceiling , and it always had more people than its size could afford, but I loved it, and on Wednesday there was open bar, even though cocktails were a bit wishy-washy...
These are pics taken by a friend of mine at the National War Museum of WWII propaganda posters.
Makes you just happy to be on the side of "freedom" huh?

My mother, gathering Corn Stooks. I love this picture, tho it looks like 1930s propaganda - nazi or communist, take your pick. The field where this was shot is moreorless where my parents' house is now - right on the campus of the University of Kent
Update June 2012: looks like it's been used as an Anti-Monsanto / GM foods meme. For the record, 1. the photoshopping in that is really poor 2. Mum (and I) are quite definitely in favour of genetic modification of foods. 'Organic' production is a luxury only a tiny percentage of the first worlds can afford...

Here are three last propaganda pieces I made for an upcoming show in Detroit.
And now that I have featured pretty much all of my favorite animals and slogan variations, I think I am going to officially consider this series CLOSED.
Expect to see these pop up in my Etsy store very soon.

Every now and again you get some Army Officer, with a weathed air of cynical detachment, making fun of some purple prose put out by someone else...
...but you know that, deep down inside, they wish they'd said it.
I was trying to get a shot of this guy on a recent trip by Blackhawk. The doors were off the helicopter and it was a really bright day - he came out all right, but the outside was totally blown out. I was left with a picture that was 50% white, so I thought I'd give the "inspirational message" image a go...
Design Cuts' current bundle includes some super cool elements, notably patterns.
These patterns got me thinking about OBEY-style pieces, and before I knew it, I started designing an OBEY like poster.
All of the piece is made in Illustrator, including the texture effects. One of the strongest piece of inspiration was this old ConEd booklet about atomic energy.
I wrote a pretty detailed process post/tutorial about it, and you should go read it.
