Now a slug-ridden monolithic husk in the depths of space, the Ashurbanipal, along with many other dreadnoughts, were once the most powerful starships around. They were a symbol of imperial might over their colonies, but this all changed during the "Downfall", during which slip-FTL was invented and all of these epic warships became obselete practically overnight.
Today, the space paradigm has been flipped completely. Teleporting nuclear missiles and starships are commonly employed by military forces, and doctrines have adapted to these circumstances.
Blender used to model the starship, Photoshop used for post and to create presentation. Background is a collation of heavily modified images found using google.
Apologies for any fucked up Farsi. I installed the Middle Eastern text engine for Photoshop this time, but otherwise I have no one to proofread what I write.
I've been working all day on a couple of projects:
-the final project for my design class (due tomorrow) which, due to a stupid bright idea required drawing a lot of origami (never again! it is so hard to get all the lines and folds and angles to look right!),
-the big project I've been teasing about (hopefully unveiled tomorrow late night),
-and an application to work for the Obama campaign (I had four people proofread my application materials and still managed to turn it in with a typo. I always find a way.)
I gave myself a break from my work and watched the movie Interview. Highly recommended. My head is still spinning. I don't think I've ever before been so enthralled by straight dialog that I've literally leaned forward in my seat.
Only two weeks left of my 365.
Not sure what I'm going to do when it's over.....it's become a diary for me, and I really like the outlet, and the visual history. So I don't want to stop. But I also don't want to be a slave to the camera and computer for the rest of my life.
I was thinking about doing a Visual Diary project (maybe create a flickr group - interest??) that basically requires me to do and share something artistic every day, but not necessarily limited to a self portrait.
Maybe?

Come with me to the bank of the Godavari River, where Sri Raya Ramananda and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu are about to have their confidential discussion.
Yesterday I explained that on his way to Godavari, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu instructed everyone He met to chant the names of Lord Krsna and to follow the teachings of Bhagavad-gita. Mahaprabhu gradually came to the temple of Jiyada-nrsimha and offered prayers:
sri nrsimha, jaya nrsimha, jaya jaya nrsimha
prahladesa jaya padma-mukha-padma-bhrnga
[“All glories to Nrsimhadeva! All glories to Nrsimhadeva, who is the Lord of Prahläda Maharaja and, like a honeybee, is always engaged in beholding the lotuslike face of the goddess of fortune.” (Caitanya-caritamrta Madhya-lila 8.5)]
ugro ’py anugra evayam
sva-bhaktanam nr-kesari
kesariva sva-potanam
anyesam ugra-vikramah
[“Although very ferocious, the lioness is very kind to her cubs. Similarly, although very ferocious to nondevotees like Hiranyakasipu, Lord Nrsimhadeva is very, very soft and kind to devotees like Prahlada Maharaja. (Caitanya-caritamrta 8.6)”]
He prayed, “Although you are very ferocious, you are very kind. You are ferocious towards those who give problems to your devotees, but you are very kind to your devotees. In that way, you are like a lioness.” A lioness is very affectionate to her cubs, and if anyone tries to harm them, she becomes like death personified. In the same way, Lord Nrsimhadeva cannot tolerate any disturbance to His devotees. When Hiranyakasipu was perpetrating atrocities against other people, Lord Nrsimhadeva did not appear. However, when he tried to torture Prahlada Maharaja, the Lord appeared and killed him – and Prahlada Maharaja prayed for his father’s deliverance.
Lord Nrsimhadeva protects anyone who will take shelter of Him. Sudarsana-cakra protects the devotees, and this cakra is Sri Nrsimhadeva himself. Therefore, worship of the cakra is performed by offering the prayers of Lord Nrsinghadeva. This is why we worship Lord Nrsimhadeva – because He gives protection to the devotees.
In Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, Srila Krsna dasa Kaviraja describes that the pujari of Jiyada-nrsimha temple gave the maha-prasada garland of Lord Nrsimhadeva to Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and then Mahaprabhu continued on His way. While traveling, Sriman Mahaprabhu did not accept alms from just anyone, because many people ate meat, fish, eggs, onions and garlic, and therefore they were not pure. He would only eat at the homes of those whose behavior was appropriate for pure Vaisnavas.
Nowadays, many persons who are born in brahmana families do not follow the rules and regulations meant for brahmanas and pure Vaisnavas. By accepting foodstuff from such persons, many obstacles will appear in our attempt to perform bhajana, and we will not be able to make advancement. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu would accept prasadam only from qualified persons – those who had properly prepared and offered the foodstuffs to their Deities. By His personal behavior and example, He taught many Vaisnava principles to those under His guidance.
Before leaving any place, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu would tell the people there:
yare dekha, tare kaha ‘krsna’-upadesa
amara ajnaya guru hana tara’ ei desa
[“Instruct everyone to follow the orders of Lord Sri Krsna as they are given in the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam. In this way become a spiritual master and try to liberate everyone in this land.” (Caitanya-caritamrta Madya-lila 7.128)]
Mahaprabhu instructed, “Tell whomever you meet the instructions of Krsna. On my order, become guru and deliver everyone you meet.” If anyone said, “I am not qualified”, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu replied, “No; ‘amara ajnaya’. On My order, if you follow My instructions, I will give you power and inspiration. You will not fall down into the waves of sense gratification.”
Continuing on His journey, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu came to the banks of the Godavari – absorbed in transcendental emotion. As stated in Sri Caitanya-caritamrta (Madya-lila 17.55-56):
vana dekhi’ bhrama haya ei – ‘vrndavana’
saila dekhi’ mane haya – ei ‘govardhana’
yahan nadi dekhe tahan manaye –‘kalindi’
maha-premavese nace prabhu pade kandi’
[“When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu passed through the Jharikhanda forest, He took it for granted that it was Vrndavana. When He passed over the hills, He took it for granted that they were Govardhana. Similarly, whenever Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu saw a river, He immediately accepted it as the river Yamuna. Thus while in the forest He was filled with great ecstatic love, and He danced and fell down crying.”]
Traveling here and there, whenever Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu saw a forest He would think, “This is Vrndavana.” When He would see a hill, He would actually experience, “This is Giriraja Govardhana.” If He saw a river like Godavari, he thought, “This is Yamuna.” In this way He was absorbed in maha-prema. This was also true when He was in Jagannatha Puri. There, when He saw Cataka Parvat, He thought it to be Giriraja Govardhana. Of course it was not Giriraja Govardhana, but He would see it in that way – by His mood. Everywhere He would look, at any hill, river or forest, they would remind Him of the pastime places of Lord Krsna like Vamsi-vata and Yamuna.

Also, thinking Himself to be Radha and the singer to be another gopi, He once went forward to embrace a devi-dasi who was singing “Mangalam-gitam”, and was stopped by His servant Govinda:
srita kamalakuca mandala! dhrta kundala! e
kalita-lalita-vanamala! Jaya jaya deva! hare
[“O You who take shelter at the breasts of sarva-laksmi-mayi Srimati Radhika! O You who wear fish-shaped earrings and a charming garland of forest flowers! Deva! Hare! All glories to You! (Sri Mangala-Gitam, verse 1)]
This behavior of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu cannot be imitated. When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu would do parikrama, He would have a direct vision of the pastimes of Srimati Radhika and Sri Krsna. So we cannot imitate Him. This stage will come naturally if we follow the process of bhakti. Do not try to jump over the stages in the progressive development of bhakti – sraddha, bhajana kriya, anartha nivritti, nista, ruci, asakti and bhava. In this way some realization will begin to come.
When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu went to Vraja Mandala for parikrama and He saw Giriraja Govardhana, He saw the pastimes of Sri Sri Radha-Krsna.
pramada-madana-lilah kandare kandare te
racayati nava-yunor dvandvam asminn amandam
iti kila kalanartham lagnakas tad-dvayor me
nija nikata-nivasam dehi govardhana! tvam
[“O Govardhana, please grant me a dwelling near your side so that I can easily witness and serve the youthful lovers Sri Sri Radha-Krsna as They perform newer and newer secret, amorous lilas within your many caves where They become completely maddened from drinking prema. You are present and making everything possible.” (Sri Govardhana-Vasa-Prarthana-Dasakam, verse 2)]
He saw that Krsna was playing with His friends in all Govardhana’s caves and kunjas. He especially saw how Krsna would meet with Srimati Radhika. He saw all the pastimes described in the Srimad Bhagavatam, and many confidential pastimes that have not been disclosed by Srila Sukadeva Gosvami. All of our Gosvamis, including Srila Raghunatha dasa Gosvami, Srila Rupa Gosvami, Srila Sanatana Gosvami and others – especially Srila Kavi Karnapura, in his book Ananda Vrndavana Campu and Srila Jiva Gosvami in his Sri Gopal Campu – have revealed many confidential pastimes that Srila Sukadeva Gosvami only hinted at.
Don’t waste your time trying to learn Sanskrit, because by associating with the bona fide guru and Vaisnavas, hearing and chanting under their guidance, all knowledge of Sanskrit and all the confidential meanings of the verses of Srimad Bhagavatam – which can never be understood by any amount of scholarship – will awaken automatically and naturally.
Those who follow the path of scholarship will think, “I have not completed my study. So I will have to study more.” And then later they will think, “I have still not completed my study – I will have to study more.” In this way, until they are old and their teeth are falling out, until their life is fully wasted without performing bhajana, they will go on studying. We should not be derailed by the allurement of maya (the illusory material energy), chasing after scholarship.
Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu finally arrived at the ghat (bathing place), at the Godavari River, where many devotees were taking bath. He took His bath, sat down on the bank of the river, and began to chant.
Sometimes He was absorbed in the song “Sri Harinama-sankirtana”:
hari haraye namah krsna yadavaya namah
yadavaya madhavaya kesavaya namah
[“Krsna is Himself Hari and He is also Yadava. He is in the dynasty of both Nanda Baba and of Vasudeva; all are Yadavas, the dynasty of Yadu. So my dandavat-pranama to the lotus feet of svayam Hari who is Yadava-Krsna. Namah means giving up all kinds of worldly relations and offering our everything to the lotus feet of Krsna.” (Nama-Sankirtana, verse 1)]

giridhari gopinath madana-mohana
Sometimes He chanted:
krsna krsna krsna krsna krsna krsna krsna he
krsna krsna krsna krsna krsna krsna krsna he
krsna krsna krsna krsna krsna krsna raksa mam
krsna krsna krsna krsna krsna krsna pahi mam
rama raghava rama raghava rama raghava raksa mam
krsna kesava krsna kesava krsna kesava pahi mam
O Krsna! O Kesava! O Rama! Please protect me; please nourish me.”
Superior to this, and superior to all other mantras, is the maha-mantra: “Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.” Uttering Sri Krsna’s names, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu became completely absorbed in transcendental emotion. He was not absorbed in the mood as being Paramatma or God, the supreme omniscient controller, for He was performing laukika-lila, human-like pastimes.
Sri Raya Ramananda arrived there at that time. He was employed as a governor of Vidyanagara in the government of Sri Prataparudra Maharaja. He was not an ordinary person. He was coming to take bath, riding on a palanquin that was carried by many servants. He was also accompanied by numerous brahmanas, who were uttering the mantras of the Vedas, such as Purusa-sukta, Sri Sukta and others. He was also surrounded by many ministers, guards, soldiers and musicians. He was very powerful. Everyone would see him like a king, and he had the power of a king, to chastise and punish anyone.
When he arrived at the Godavari River, Ramananda Raya followed all the rules and regulations for visiting and bathing at a holy tirtha. The sastras enjoin that when one comes to a holy place (tirtha), one should shave his head, fast, bring a mala, wear pure cloth and take darsana of Thakurji (the Deities). After that one can take some maha-prasadam. When we come to a holy tirtha, we fill our belly, and then we go and have darsana of the Deities in the same clothes we were wearing the previous night. Sri Ramananda Raya, on the other hand, followed all the Vedic rules and regulations.
After bathing, Ramananda Raya distributed charity to the brahmanas, and then he noticed that a sannyasi was sitting and chanting on the bank of the river – as effulgent as the sun. That beautiful sannyasi was dressed in saffron cloth, and His body had all the symptoms of a maha-purusa or an incarnation of God.
ajanu-lambita-bhujau kanakavadatau
sankirtanaika-pitarau kamalayataksau
visvambharau dvija-varau yuga-dharma-palau
vande jagat-priya-karau karunavatarau
[“I worship the incarnations of mercy, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Nityananda Prabhu, whose arms extend to Their knees, whose complexions are a resplendent yellow and very enchanting like the hue of gold, who inaugurated the sankirtana movement, whose eyes are large like lotus petals, who nourish the entire universe, who appeared in the families of exalted brahmanas, who protect the yuga-dharma, and who bestow the highest auspiciousness upon the residents of the material world.” (Sri Caitanya-bhagavata)
The sannyasi’s arms were very long, reaching down to his knees, His eyes were very broad like lotus flowers, and He measured three and half times the length of How lower arm. These are called nyagrodha- parimandala, the symptoms of a maha-purusa or an incarnation of God.
When Srila Raya Ramananda saw Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, he was thoroughly astonished by the Lord’s beauty. Approaching Him, he thought, “I’ve never seen anyone so attractive in my entire life.” When he arrived at His side, he very humbly offered obeisances to Him, following the regulations of Vedic culture. In Vedic tradition one must offer obeisances, even to one’s mother and father, and what to speak of a qualified person in the renounced order? Seeing Raya Ramananda offering obeisances, Mahaprabhu lifted him up and asked, “Are you Raya Ramananda?” Raya Ramananda replied, “I am simply your servant. I am a sudra. My intelligence and mind are dull. I am a despicable, fallen person.”
Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu humbly inquired about Ramananda Raya’s identity, and Raya Ramananda very humbly replied. Pure Vaisnavas consider themselves to be most insignificant. When they meet together, their meeting is very sweet, like this.
Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu then embraced Raya Ramananda, at which time all sattvika-bhavas – such as trembling, tears flowing from the eyes, perspiration, faltering of the voice and fading of the bodily complexion manifested on their bodies – and they both fainted.
This is called svabhavika-prema, natural love. Raya Ramananda is Visakha sakhi and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Sri Krsna Himself. In this pastime they are meeting for the first time, but they are naturally overwhelmed with love. Natural love refers to that love which is coming out from ones heart due to ones constitutional position. Constitutionally, Raya Ramananda is the most beloved of Sri Krsna, and therefore their love naturally flowed. All other love is artificial.
When the brahmanas present saw Mahaprabhu and Raya Ramananda embrace and become overwhelmed, they were astonished. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was a sannyasi, who was meant to be very grave, and Ramananda Raya was naturally also very grave, and very learned in all sastras. Raya Ramananda was by caste a sudra, and this sannyasi was a brahmana. The brahmanas thought, “How is it that this sannyasi is embracing a sudra? And how is it that this sudra, who is very grave, is becoming overwhelmed with so many emotions?” Because the brahmanas were not pure Vaisnavas, they could not understand the appearance of sattvika-bhavas. They were not very close to Mahaprabhu and Raya Ramananda, and they had a somewhat unfavorable mood.
When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu composed Himself and His emotions subsided, He said, “I’ve come here just to meet with you; not for anything else.” He explained that He was sent by Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya, who had praised Raya Ramananda, and to that Raya Ramananda replied, “Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya considers me his servant. Therefore, in all ways, directly or indirectly, he always acts to bring about my welfare. He has sent You to meet with me for my welfare.”
If one has sadhu-sanga – if one is under the guidance of a sadhu – he will have some realization of krsna-bhakti and his life is successful. On the other hand, without having qualified association and guidance, one lives like an animal. He will also die like an animal, and in his next life he will become an animal, like a dog or a hog. His life is completely wasted. We should try to take shelter of a self-realized guru and harinama-sankirtana and gradually progress through the stages of sraddha (faith), anartha nivrtti (freedom from unwanted habits, nistha (steadiness), ruci (taste in bhajana), asakti (attachment to Krsna), bhava and prema, and thus make our lives successful.
Outwardly one may be situated in his social position and perform his many external duties, but the rest of the time he should be strongly engaged in doing bhajana, and gradually his life will become successful.
Raya Ramananda said, “I understand that Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya is so merciful to me, that he has sent You and You have embraced me.” He then uttered a verse from Srimad Bhagavatam:
mahad vicalanam nrnam
grhinam dina cetasam
nihsreyasya bhagavan
kalpate nanyatha kvacit
[“O my lord, O great devotee, persons like you move from one place to another not for their own interests but for the sake of poor-hearted grhasthas [householders]. Otherwise they have no interest in going from one place to another.” (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.8.4)]
This verse was previously told by Nanda Maharaja, soon after Lord Krsna was born. Vasudeva Maharaja had secretly sent Gargacarya from Mathura to Gokula, to perform the nama-samskara, (name giving ceremony) of Lord Krsna and Lord Balarama. At that time Nanda Maharaja met with Gargacarya, a great Vaisnava, and addressed him with this verse. He told him, “You are mahat”.
Krsna is the greatest of the great and the smallest of the small. He is greatest in all respects. Those who are the servants of that great personality are also mahat (great). Those great personalities wander here and there for the benefit of those who are attached to their household life and would otherwise have no opportunity to meet with a sadhu.
Nanda Baba is not an ordinary person. He is Lord Krsna’s father birth after birth – the eternal father of Krsna – yet he honored Gargacarya by these words. Such great personalities come to meet with those whose consciousness is very low, due to their being attached to temporary household life. Pure devotees go to their homes to meet with them. They have no desire for self-gain. They don’t come for any other purpose than to help the householders.
I have one request for all of you. Today, Lord Jagannatha and Bimala Devi (Lord Jagannatha’s consort) have sent very delicious prasadam – rice, sweet dahl, dahlma, malpura, kichori and many other preparations. So today, if you do not honor that prasadam, you are most unfortunate. You should all take prasadam here. After evening arati you can immediately sit here, and prasadam will be served.

Jack Abel worked for many companies, beginning in the early 1950s primarily as an inker. He inked 'Swan' on 'Superman' and the 'Legion of Super-Heroes' for almost three years. After that, Abel illustrated for Gold Key's 'Grimm's Ghost Stories' and various other magazines during the late 1960s and the 1970s. He worked at Marvel in various positions up until his death in 1996
Mademoiselle Marie (created by Bob Kanigher and Jerry Grandenetti) was one of the most legendary figures in France's resistance movement (Star-Spangled War Stories # 84-91. Despite the claims of a Parisian woman that Marie was shot on August 24, 1944, the eve of the city's liberation, and later gave birth to a baby (Detective Comics # 501-502), the heroine is known to been active at least through Sgt. Rock Special [second series] # 2). Her subsequent activities, including the status of her romantic relationship with Sgt. Frank Rock (Sgt. Rock # 412, 421) is still unknown.
Jack Abel
a.k.a. "Gary Michaels" (born July 15, 1927; died March 6, 1996) is an American comic book artist best known as an inker for leading publishers DC Comics and Marvel Comics. He was DC's primary inker on the Superman titles in the late 1960s and early '70s, and inked penciler Herb Trimpe's introduction of Wolverine in The Incredible Hulk #181.
Biography
Early life and career
Jack Abel inks Ric Estrada in an excerpt from Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes #232 (Oct. 1977), p.29
Abel's published work stretches to 1951, when he penciled and inked horror stories for such anthology series as Fiction House's Ghost, Mr. Publications' Mister Mystery, and Atlas Comics' Journey into Mystery. He inked Westerns, science fiction, and war comics for Atlas, American Comics Group, Harvey Comics, and Prize Comics, and later in the decade became a prolific penciler for the DC war titles Our Fighting Forces, Our Army At War, Star Spangled War Stories and All-American Men of War.
DC and Superman
Abel inked hundreds of DC stories in his increasingly smooth, lush style, and eventually was chosen to succeed longtime "Superman family" inker George Klein as Curt Swan's embellisher on "Legion of Super-Heroes" in Adventure Comics (most issues, #369-406, June 1968 - May 1971); Superman (most issues, #208-219, July 1968 - Aug. 1969); "Superman" in Action Comics (#369-392, Nov. 1968 - Sept. 1970), and occasional issues of Superboy.
Later career
After a reshuffling at DC c. 1970, Abel went to Marvel. He had already inked Gene Colan there on a long stretch of "Iron Man" stories beginning with Tales of Suspense #73 (Jan. 1966), under the pseudonym "Gary Michaels". Now, under his own name, he would embellish Colan on some issues of Daredevil and Tomb of Dracula (including the introduction of Blade, in #10); Trimpe on The Incredible Hulk; George Tuska on Iron Man; and Paul Gulacy on Master of Kung Fu, among other work.
From the mid-1970s, the in-demand Abel inked not only for Marvel and again DC (including its Teen Titans and The Flash), but for the smaller companies Gold Key (Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery, Grimm’s Ghost Stories, Mighty Samson, the licensed title The Twilight Zone); Charlton Comics (Ghost Manor, Ghostly Haunts, Haunted, Midnight Tales); Atlas/Seaboard (IronJaw, Morlock 2001); and Skywald Publications (The Heap, and additionally the black-and-white horror-comics magazines Nightmare and Psycho).
Baseball-fan Abel, who in the 1970s rented studio space at Neal Adams and Dick Giordano's Continuity Associates, organized the Continuity softball team that played league games in Central Park.
Years later, when in his sixties, Abel inked backgrounds for DC artist Murphy Anderson, and became a proofreader in the Marvel bullpen before being partially debilitated by a stroke.
Comic strips
Outside comic books, Abel inked John Celardo from 1967-1969 on the syndicated comic strip Tales of the Green Beret, written by author Robin Moore.

AN ESSAY ABOUT THE UNITED NATIONS, CAPITALISM, SOCIALISM, COMMUNISM, RECLAIMING OUR NATIONAL UNITY AND HOW THE RETURNING VETERANS OF THE MIDDLE EAST WILL BECOME THE NEW HOPE FOR A UNITED STATES OF PROSPERITY AND CAPITALISM...

It is kind of like ancient history in that Rome paid tribute to the Huns for a long period of time and all the while the Huns demanded more and more.
If there are those that have not read about the decline of the once great Roman Empire, let me recommend it as reading that will help explain the concern of many United States citizens.
Personally, I view the United Nations as one of the enemies within. Back when the United Nations began, it was a great and wonderful organization, a kind of hope for world peace.
Throughout the years, we have seen it change. I have noticed that in the interest of today's trend in political correctness that has, in my opinion, driven more than a few good women and men totally insane and ruined thought processes that could have added great contributions to the world as a whole, keeping in perspective the reality of boundaries, economics, immigration policies and the prosecution of war criminals. I have seen the love the world had for America turn into a vile hatred due to the propaganda spread by ever-increasing new and strange member nations that held great grudges against the United States and other like nations.
There was room in the United Nations for all nations, but once the issue of religion entered into the hallowed auditoriums of the United Nations, it was, to quote an oft-mispronounced idiom "...all she wrote." Oh, there was no problem with religion as long as it was not associated with Christianity. I have no bones to pick with other religions; I rather admire the Bhuddists, their gentle nature is admirable.
In my opinion, the issues of importance in the United Nations should have remained focused on world hunger, world habitat, world conservation and various earth-be-saved programs. Now, however, the United Nations has started talks about criticism of religion. I do not think Scientology is an issue for the United Nations. If my cousin in Miami wants to write a column about the violence perpetuated by a numerically-focused group of unidentifiable Scientologists, I believe she should have that right. To get to my point immediately, the United Nations is not and should never be used as a forum for discussing ANY type of religious beliefs and I will include ALL OF THE RELIGIONS ON THE FACE OF THIS PLANET. If we are going to address religion in the United Nations, the United Nations should be moved immediately to another nation and the United State should resign. Religion and government in the United States is seperate; so should it be in the United Nations.
Without the United States, where would the U.N. relocate and where would they collect their funds? The more this nation and its leaders pay tribute to the United Nations, the sooner this nation will suffer a collapse that will only be prevented by a complete change of voting habits of this populace. Many of those who have been in Washington for more than two terms have forgotten they are United States citizens and feel like they are beyond reproach involving their initial purpose of representing their people back home; many have lost touch with their constituents and are, in many respects, their own unique and sovereign nation with their own medical care, their own retirement plans, and their own government supplied autos and offices with their own an personal "official" budgets supplied by both their states and the Federal Government. They are the ELITE, like the elite in the nations that have covertly removed democracy and capitalism, replacing them with socialism, the first step, as history proves, to the adoption of communism.
Shame on our Senators and Representatives who are no longer representing their constituents but representing and supporting each other, making alliances that are all too often personal and financially influenced to add wealth to their own accounts. If there is a spread the wealth mentatlity here, it is spreading the wealth within their own elite society.
Many in the government today have not spent one day in the military, a sad fact because unless one serves in the military it is almost impossible to understand how military minds work when it comes to serving for one purpose and one purpose only, the preservation of freedom for all, especially the home folks, the people back home in the seperate states, the boundaried domains of republics that are a homeland within a Homeland.
The last successful collection of homelands within a Homeland that were socialist republics with a "united" that was not a name but an afterthought was the USSR and as we all know, they went bankrupt, closed, went out of business. There are those in America today who have lost faith in private enterprise, but not so much "private enterprise" but Capitalism. No, these people are not the enemies within, they are not the enemies of the state, they are but confused men and women who have confused economic thoughts, men and women who have no real knowledge of American history, men and women who have looked upon Sweden and Norway, a blue-eyed and blonde-haired bunch with what seems a perfect socialist system, albeit that their taxes are the highest in the world, they have the best healthcare programs. How ironic that long after the fall of blonde-haired and blue-eyed Colonialism, third world personalities admire another Anglo scheme that has yet to be completely revealed. We had best stick to what the forefathers had in mind for American economics. Capitalism won't work?
It worked a lot longer than any socialism that I can recall. My God, I hope we continue to thrive and succeed as a nation that is a Capitalistic nation and do not fall victim to yet another blonde-haired and blue-eyed concoction like Scandanavian Socialism. I chose the Scandanavian brand of socialism rather than the socialism of the third world nations because there are so many more wide-screen televisions and Volvos in the Scandanavian brand. Confused? Do not be. Let us make certain, however, that the next President is an avowed Capitalist. But what do we do about all of the career Senators and Representatives, so many of them with snowy hair, an indication of retirement age? What do we do with them? We have no gulags in America, thankfully. It is time to send these stately gentlemen, white and black, back home to where they began, back home to become reacquainted with their homelands in the winter of their lives.
IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE WE HAVE A NEW GENERATION OF MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE SERVED HONORABLY IN THE MILITARY, much like the men and women who served America in World War Two and Korea, a generation that helped America remain great and prosperous. Hopefully, these post war vets of the Middle East will want to serve in government. Let us not give up hope, thousand upon thousand of military veterans will once again serve the states and this nation and we shall be vigilant in a united effort once again.

I served more than 10 years before I got my tattoo. Here are two stories which explain why I was so careful.
Anchors Inboard:
The Eagle, Globe and Anchor (EGA) is our emblem and Marines plaster it everywhere. It's an important part of the uniform and there are two collar emblems on the Dress Blue Uniform. See here: www.flickr.com/photos/clippermonsoon/388847895/in/set-721...
The collar emblems are not identical because the anchors must always "face inboard" or towards the center. Marines getting the EGA on their arms get them with the anchor facing inboard.
A guy from my platoon tried to explain that to the tattoo artist. The EGA in the book had the anchor going to the right, but he wanted it going left. No problem, said the tattoo guy, I can flip it.
So this Marine comes back with the tattoo and as expected he's showing his EGA to all of us for the next few days. About the third day after he'd gotten it, another platoon member noticed something, sure the anchor was going in the right direction, but on the globe, Florida was now in the Pacific Ocean. The tattoo guy had flipped a transparency and copied it identically, including the now transposed east and west coasts of the map on the globe.
The Meat Tag:
Another Marine I know (Sgt O,) the guy in the Dress Blue uniform link above, got a tattoo known as a "meat tag." It's a copy of one's dogtag information: name, serial (social security) number, blood type, gas mask size, religion, and "USMC" and it's tattooed on one's torso, a few inches below the armpit.
The reasoning behind the meat tag is somewhat morbid. It supposes that if you got your head blown off and your dogtags with it, your body could still be identified and sent home to Mom. Some Marines today would say DNA identification would render that obsolete. I say it's always been obsolete because the Marine Corps made us mark every article of clothing with a name stamp or name tape.
Anyway, the tattoo "artist" who did Sgt O's meat tag got his social security number wrong by one digit. I guess he could research that SSN number to find out where his torso will end up.
Always have your tattoo artist draw it on paper first. Proofread it like it's a...well, tattoo.

In general, writers tend to specialize in certain types of writing such as novels, plays, biographies, and textbooks. And songwriters, screenwriters, and scriptwriters create scripts for radio, television, films, plays, and other types of performances. Copy writers use their writing skills to create advertisements for publications or broadcasting. Usually they also work with a client to produce advertising themes or slogans and they may go beyond writing and become involved in the marketing of products and services. Editors are primarily responsible for reviewing, rewriting, and editing the work of writers, though editors may also create original written content. In practice, editors are actually discouraged from marking up corrections in red. Apparently, annotation in red surfaces uncomfortable associations with "marking".
Our kingdom for a CMS!
Experimentation was at the heart of this newspaper project. A chance for us to remind ourselves of the process of creating copy for a deadline, without the luxury of a CMS and theoretically movable deadline.
We had to meet the 2pm, Tuesday 25 January deadline with Newspaper Club in order to get these papers in the post in time for delivery on 1st February.

on 9.March, I discover, someone likes my Morrissey photo! Thankyou thank you thankyou!
You sit down at this chair, type some lines of text and the Intertype clickitty-clacks and whirs away, finding the master for each character you've input, puts it in its place in line, squirts molten lead into these tiny master-molds and in a few seconds you've got solid lead lines of type, ready for the press. While you proofread the freshly cast block of type, you can hear the tiny metal master characters being sent back to their original locations. This is all done mechnically. Newspapers and books were typeset this way into the 60s and 70s. Totally amazing, and actually makes modern digital printers look lowtech.

Thursday morning the sad news was passed from lip to lip that an old and esteemed citizen, William Cunningham, was dead, and it was a great shock to his friends and to the city in general, because, although he had been suffering for years with asthma, yet he had been attending to business the day before he died, and while many have expected him to pass away suddenly, yet the shock was none the less severe.
Mr. Cunningham occupied a room by himself, and it is supposed he passed away while suffering with a worse attack of asthma than usual. He was found in the morning.
William Cunningham was born in Alleghaney county, Pa., Feb. 26, 1837. The family moved to Beaver county the following year, and when he was old enough he entered Beaver Academy for two years, afterwards teaching in the public schools. He graduated from the Iron City Commercial College, of Pittsburg, and was proofreader and mailing clerk on the Presbyterian Banner and Advocate for two years. He attended the Western University of Pennsylvania two years, and then taught school in Pittsburg until the outbreak of the Rebellion.
In 1862 he enlisted in Battery G, Pennsylvania Artillery, and served through the war, and was discharged at Harrisburg in June, 1865. After the war he again taught school in Pittsburg, until his health failed when he acted as traveling salesman for the publishing house of Sheldon & Company, of New York, having his headquarters at St. Louis. He followed this business for two years. In 1871 he came to Humboldt and was employed by Col. S. H. Stevens as head man in his lumber business, where he remained two years, and then went to Kalida, the then county seat of Woodson county, and engaged in mercantile business. Afterwards he taught school in Woodson county and then engaged in farming, until the Citizens Lumber Co. of Humboldt, was organized when he was installed as manager of that concern. In 1880 he engaged in the mercantile business under the firm Neal & Cunningham, and continued in this business until elected county treasurer of Allen county, which office he held for four years, and then engaged in the lumber business under the firm name of Cunningham & Son, and they were succeeded by the Hurley Lumber Co.
In April 1871, Mr. Cunningham was married to Miss Etta A. Phelps, of Windsor, Mo. Their only child is A. W. Cunningham of this city, editor of the Humboldt Herald.
During Mr. Cunningham’s business career in our city and county, he has ever been actuated by the highest principles of honesty and integrity, and was ever wide-awake for the best interests of the town and community. His friends will miss him greatly as he has been a central figure in our community for many years, and they will extend deepest sympathy to the bereaved wife, son and other relatives in this sad and sudden affliction.
The funeral services of Mr. Cunningham will be held at the Presbyterian church Saturday afternoon, Feb. 8th, at 2:30. Friends wishing to see him will please call at the home Saturday morning from 10 o’clock to 1.

The general bustle of business and the apparent thrift of the little city attracted him and he was at once possessed of serious intention of locating there. He made the acquaintance of Colonel S. H. Stevens then in the lumber business and at noon of the same day was installed as the latter's chief clerk and salesman. He remained in this business two years and, upon retiring went to the new county seat of Woodson county, Kalida, and engaged in mercantile pursuits. Grasshoppers destroyed not only the crops of the season following but destroyed Mr. Cunningham's prospects, as well, and he traded his goods for cattle and that winter spent his time profitably by teaching a country school in Woodson county. The following spring he became a full-fledged farmer and remained such until the new Citizens Lumber Company, of Humboldt, chose him to manage their yard there. When this company was absorbed by S. A. Brown in after years the subject hereof engaged in the grocery business in Humboldt, continuing it eight years, or until his election as County Treasurer.
Mr Cunningham has ever and always been noted for his intense Rpublicanism. His interest in things political began almost with his residence in Kansas and for many years he has been recognized as one of the active, honorable and judicious counselors of his party in local affairs. He was nominated for Treasurer of the county in 1887 and in November of that year he was elected by a large majority. He was elected two years later by a larger majority than before. His popularity as a public official grew with his service and his efficiency as such is unsurpassed. On leaving the county seat in 1896 he returned to Humboldt and was identified with the Bank of Humboldt in a clerical capacity. December 3rd of that year he opened a lumber yard in Humboldt as the successor of J. P. Johnson and Leidigh & Huston. The firm of Mr. Cunningham and son is one of the prominent enterprises of the city.
In April, 1871, Mr. Cunningham was married to Miss Etta A. Phelps of Windsor, Missouri. Their only child is Arthur W. Cunningham, who was married May 1, 1901, to Mary I. Blackman.

Born in Missouri in 1936, Dr. Elgin has had a distinguished career as a writer, artist, linguist, verbal self-defense trainer, grandmother, publisher of the Linguistics & Science Fiction newsletter, and founder of the Science Fiction Poetry Association. In 1980, she first came to widespread attention with her book The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense. Elgin’s place in the conlanger’s pantheon, however, was assured with the creation of Láadan, appearing in her Native Tongue Trilogy: Native Tongue, The Judas Rose, and Earthsong. Láadan is a language created by women for women.** The novel is set in a future where women have been subjugated to serve only as linguists for male-dominated companies dealing with various alien races. However, being linguists, the women begin to create a language to more accurately reflect their thoughts, feelings, and desires and to free them from a male-dominated, aggressive way of expressing themselves. 21-year-old Carsten Becker, a native of Braunschweig, Germany, started conlanging after reading J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and being amazed by "all the Quenya in there and the detail given to it." He happened upon Mark Rosenfelder's Language Construction Kit (http://www.zompist.com/kit.html) while doing Internet searches for material on Tolkien's languages. This was in 2002, and, in December 2003, Carsten began work on his conlang Ayeri after two previous abandoned attempts known as The Nameless Language and Daléian. Carsten states that "since then, Ayeri has been gradually growing, and my ultimate goal is to make it a comfortably usable (private) language -- which I think is a common goal of many conlangers." An in-depth Ayeri Coursebook was written in 2005 by Carsten and was made available on his website in a professional-looking PDF format. It included the three separate Ayeri writing systems as well as a full grammar and dictionary. Carsten is revising the Ayeri grammar to reflect changes made in the past few years and is planning on tackling the entire Coursebook next; however, information is readily available on the web at Tay Benung: The Ayeri Resource (http://benung.freehostia.com). The site includes a grammar, dictionary, texts, information on the scripts, and even recordings in Ayeri! Tay Benung is Ayeri for "The Web."
Carsten is currently in training as a publishing assistant for Westermann, one of the biggest publishers of textbooks in Germany and known internationally for their exquisite wall maps. Studying languages or linguistics sometime after finishing his training "is still at the back of my mind," Carsten admits, "as it could also be useful for getting on with my current job." And, not to mention, continuing to expand Ayeri.

Collaborative conlang projects are common on the Internet, but a venture like the exhibit you are currently viewing is unprecedented. The scale of the undertaking and the fact that it is designed for the general public (i.e., not only for other conlangers) is unique. The project was initiated by Don Boozer who wrote all the text for the exhibit (except where otherwise quoted). Any errors, factual, grammatical, or typographical, are his. Don was uniquely qualified to present this exhibit. He was a presenter at the 2007 Language Creation Conference; has published articles on conlanging in Library Journal, The Linguist (the official journal of the British Chartered Institute of Linguists), and VOYA (a journal highlighting library services to teens); and is currently working on several conlangs of his own including Dritok (an entirely voiceless language incorporating hisses, fricatives, clicks, and hand gestures for an imaginary species with no vocal cords).
One of the goals of the exhibit was “to put a face to the craft of conlanging,” and, towards this end, Don contacted a number of prominent language creators to request photos and biographical information. These conlanging celebrities graciously responded with enthusiasm and great humility and included Doug Ball (California), Carsten Becker (Germany), Måns Björkman (Sweden), Helge Fauskanger (Norway), Suzette Haden Elgin (Arkansas), Sai Emrys (California), Anthony Harris (Vermont), Sonja Elen Kisa (Canada), Marc Okrand (DC), David J. After writing the first draft of the text for the exhibit, Don posted a message on the CONLANG listserv asking for proofreading volunteers. A few hours later, a full complement of proofreaders from around the world had taken the challenge: Terrence Donnelly (Missouri), Dr. Dirk Elzinga (Utah), Sai Emrys (California), Arnt Richard Johansen (Norway), David McCann (London, England), Michael Poxon (Norfolk, England), Larry Sulky (Canada), and Steven Lytle (Ohio). The main machine (the columns) does the computing, the part at left is for engraving straight to a printing plate... (Babbage had discovered that many of the errors in the tables used at the time (1822) weren't in calculation, they were in setting the type for the table... and fatigue on the proofreader's part!)
(one of the jokes in computing circles is that most technical proofreaders have dyslexia... and self-describe their profession as proffredder...)
The CHM's machine was made to the tolerances capable of being made in Babbage's time, proving that the design would have worked, as this machine does work. (if Babbage had ever finalized a design, that is!)

She married Ivan "Blu" T. Blumenauer on May 5, 1957, at Rose Grove, Iowa. He preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 1993.
Doris retired as a proofreader for West Publishing.
Surviving are daughters, Claudia (Norm) Lee of Afton, Minn., and Laura (Tony) Ritten of Amery; a son, Dennis (Babette) of South St. Paul, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Becky Iverson; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Zimmerman of Stillwater.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, David; a granddaughter, Dawn Blumenauer; two brothers; and two sisters.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 1, from Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home, Hastings, with Rev. Linda Lund, Chaplain at Augustana Health Care Center, officiating. Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 11, at Lakeside Cemetery, Hastings.
Visitation will be held 5-8 p.m. Thursday and an hour prior to services Friday at the funeral home.

C) I’m tired of hearing “Where you come from?” every single day. I come from / I am / I’ll go everywhere. D) My queer nature can’t help it: I don’t trust in men who wear white pants. It’s silly, I know, but it’s also true. E) Sometimes I breathe, sometimes I heave a sigh. F) I miss a lot of persons located worldwide. G) Some of you are really special to me. You know that. 4.Self perception: I’m not better, I’m unique. I’m the only one you can’t have. I’m so different that I see how difficult is managing me, no matter how far or close we are. I don’t know how this sounds but I’m based on my own experience. Feel free to take the first step in order to prove how real this curse is. I’m so easy though...
5.Portraiture: I do self portraits to understand myself under certain circumstances. Sometimes I really feel I can read your whole being based on some picture. Portraiture is a beautiful art that transcends the beauty of the model. Curiously, I’ve realized I never take pictures of me when I feel great because I feel there’s nothing to understand behind a smile beyond happiness itself. However, I’ll try to bring the camera with me the next time I feel fine.
6.What I love: I love colours, I love shapes, I love paper, I love boxes, I love a lot of things. I love L.O.S.T, Seinfeld and The I.T Crowd... Pff! Hundreds of some other TV Series. I love people. Actually I love everyone I know. I’m curious about people and I LOVE knowing people. I love remembering and I hate forgetting. That’s totally me.
7.As much as I give, as much I feel rich. I love helping people. I love to feel I’m useful or necessary somehow. I really love it.
8.I’m working on three different personal projects now. Two books and some other things related to music and photography. I’d like to finish and make more concrete at least two of them this year. It’s really important to me.
9.I love languages. Besides Spanish, Catalan and English I’d like to speak 3 more languages even though sometimes I feel I’d like to improve my English language skills firstly, so any comment or proofreading will be truly appreciated. I confess I’m not totally focused on writing these lines now.
10.I believe in God. I’d say I’ve built my own private religion. Mother Nature is involved too. I’m a bit superstitious, that’s why I’m not telling some things about me here.

This is first test print of our book, sitting on top of a spiral bound printout of a proofreading draft.
We finished things up in the wee hours of Saturday morning after a very long Friday. If all goes to plan, the official launch will be in a few weeks.
In the meantime, some sleep, and then catching up on various things, including some Flickr time.

I was subjected to a fairly brutal meeting today.
It seems, last Saturday, whilst proofreading pages [for Sunday's paper], I missed the fact that an editor forgot to place [on the cover] a tease banner which directs readers to inside columnist content.
I'd got a heads up on Sunday to "be prepared for a spanking" on Monday.
In preparation for said spanking, I decided to dress appropriately, considering I'd be meeting with Upper Management and all. I mean, I knew they'd be wearing 18-piece suits. So I wore ripped up Levis and a Teamster t-shirt. Upper Management just *loves* us Union Folk. (/sarcasm) Jaws dropped when I entered the room. Literally.
So I sat down at the end of a rather large table ... the UM sitting 'round the other end of the table. Seven of 'em. The queen of the bunch, Janet [cunt] Owen [aka VP of Operations] sitting directly opposite me, drumming her fingers on the table (okay so I was a few minutes late ... fashionably dontchaknow).
After a short but decidedly condescending "Good afternoon Amber, thank you for joining us blah blah blah ..." Janet layed into me.
Holy shit, the way I was brow beaten, no joke, you'd think I'd single-handedly brought about the decline of western civilization.
After rambling through babble-on Babylon, eventually Janet opined: "Amber, we've estimated that your oversight has cost the newspaper approximately fifteen-thousand-dollars in newsstand sales."
