A well earned rest together 💕

Took a lil stroll with Muse this morning! @mc.tyzzy said I had to bring our dog Bleu for protection😂 the fresh air felt so good! It was Muse’s first time outside he was smiling ear to ear, I think he liked the sounds of the birds chirping. I had to snap a picture to send to my husband.. look at how happy he was

of course I had to step outside in some heels! @neutraltones.sl always is my go to, these kitten mules are perfect for them postpartum walks! I was really put the mother moms in the neighborhood to shame, my girls sitting right in this @honeyb.sl.2022 dress! I was feeling myself to hard 😂

A sculpture of a mother and her child, by Henry Moore, at an exhibition of Moore's work at Hatfield House, Hertfordshire.

Motherhood and the mother-child pairing were regular features of Moore's work. While he often explained his fixation with the mother and child in compositional terms – the relationship of two forms, one large, one small, and in relation to the concepts of protection and nurturing, others have suggested the long childless period of his marriage may have also contributed to this recurring theme.

Looking at the abdomen of this female goldenrod crab spider (Misumena vatia) we can notice that it is pretty wrinkled. This could be down to one of three things (or a ombination): Either the spider is very hungry or thirsty, or it could be that she has recently laid a whole bunch of eggs which means here abdonmen used to be much bigger.

Since this ambush hunter thought it a good idea to wait for pollinators to pounce on on top of a wilted heartleaf ox-eye (Telekia speciosa) - a place where perhaps not so many pollinating insects come, it might be hunger though.

Rachel tells The Weekly Flickr in this video, "I've always loved photography but never dreamed it would be something that I could turn into a successful career. Flickr really made that happen; it completely changed my life. I wouldn’t be who I am today without it."

Visit featured photographer Rachel Devine's photostream and explore more about her story in the Flickr Blog.

Without provocation, my mind can wonder and again I remember how wonderful it was to put my hand out as I walked, and to touch the strength, the power and the love that was my dog, Ben.

I miss my Wolfhound so much - but in-between the painful yearnings of my heart there is Rosie.

Rosie is the exact opposite of Ben. She is the red-headed spitfire. She manufactures energy with every step she takes and the more she walks the more reved up she becomes. Huge gulps of infinite energy. Everything is new. Everything is delightful. Rosie sees everything.

She stops to watch the leaves blow down the street and like an athlete in training takes up the challenge trying to capture as many as she can. I watch as she kisses her first fly, her first beetle, her first spider. She stops to watch in fascination as the liberated children run and laugh in the school playground. What are you thinking little one, I wonder?

Rosie is the Walmart ambassador on our walks and feels the need to greet everyone and then looks on with sorrow as they say goodbye. The world belongs to Rosie and she is wasting no time embracing all it has to offer.

The Irish Terrier breed is not for the first time dog owner or for the weak hearted. DO NOT be suckered in by those gorgeous, dreamy eyes and the darling way she quizzically holds her head. She is stubborn (ALL the shoes in this house belong to her and her alone), tenacious (she actually prances as she walks), and if she were able to vocalize her opinion so that we could really understand what she is trying to say to us we would realize that she is ALWAYS right! She abhors discipline and three walks a day are simply not enough. It is exhausting and when my husband comes home from work I eagerly pass the responsibility of HIS red-head onto him for the duration of the day. When we first got her I broke down one particularly trying morning. I felt like I was in a Postpartum depression from this incorrigible puppy and my daughter offered to look after her. She told me I needed to take a few hours of “me” time.

The way I look at it, is, the breeder should be paying us to take these bounders off of their hands and then send monthly disbursements to us just for keeping our commitment!

…and when the moon takes over for the sun and another day has passed, it is time to put our Rosie to bed. Our lovely, precious puppy who has taught us to laugh again ends the day with yet another gift - sweet puppy kisses - one from her, and then another one - from Ben…

This was one of the earliest maternity hospitals in Great Britain. It opened in 1767 on Westminster Bridge Road, London and closed in 1971. Lying-in is an archaic term for childbirth (referring to the month-long bed rest prescribed for postpartum confinement).

The hospital was an initiative of Dr John Leake, a physician, and the site chosen was on the north side of Westminster Bridge Road, Lambeth, then on the outskirts of London. Its foundation stone was laid in August 1765 and the facility opened as the Westminster New Lying-in Hospital in April 1767.

With a view to expansion, the governors bought a lease of a plot of ground with 100-foot frontage on the east side of York Road, Lambeth (above) in the early 1820s. The new building was designed by Henry Harrison and was built at a cost of about £3,000. On 22 September 1828, the minutes record that "On Friday Morning a Patient was delivered of a Son in the New Hospital and the Committee met this day in the new Hospital for the first time." The facility was incorporated by royal charter as the General Lying-In Hospital in 1830. A new ward and a training school for midwives was established in 1879.

Joseph Lister became consulting surgeon in March 1879 and Sir John Williams and Sir Francis Champneys were appointed physicians the following year. Two houses on the north side of the hospital, known as the Albany Baths, were converted into a nurses' home (i.e. staff accommodation) in 1907; this facility was re-built between 1930 and 1933 as a modern red-brick building with a mansard roof, designed by E Turner Powell. The hospital was evacuated to Diocesan House, St Albans during the Second World War, but returned to Lambeth and joined the National Health Service under the management of St Thomas' Hospital in 1946.

The hospital closed in 1971 and fell into a state of dereliction. It was restored and refurbished in 2003 at a cost of £4.27 million financed in part by a grant from the Guy's and St Thomas' Charity. Since March 2013 the building has comprised part of the Premier Inn Hotel Waterloo.

The former hospital has been recorded as a Grade II listed building since 1981. The shot was taken from the middle of Forum Magnum Square.

There were at least 3 postpartum females hidden under this giant granite slab at the edge of which writhed a portion their progeny. The neonates would shift as they reached their ideal temperature, and this pile extended about a foot and a half under the slab. This was the largest collection neonates observed over 3 birthing locations all associated with one den. There were a total of 11 postpartum females, 1 yet to deliver, and upwards of 90 neonates observed.

I wanted to write something for #suicidepreventionday and more over I wanted to photograph for it which I kinda did but the photo was super rushed and crappy and didn't do the concept any justice so I wanted to re-take..buuut found myself caught up in space facts and neon lights. I didnt want to get dark deep but space always leaves me feeling kind of 'spacey'. But space kind of ties into this whole mental health thing pretty well, I found a lot when experiencing the world in a dark way I didnt think I could overcome to look at the universe and my place in it as the bigger picture. The facts are we don't know why we are here or our meaning, but in no way should that make you feel worthless. What we do know is when the Moon first formed nearly 4.5 Billion years ago it was about 17 times closer, meaning 17 times as large as it appears to us today. But because of tidal forces, it is being whipped around Earth ever so slightly faster and faster, kinda like how you could tie a rock onto the end of a string and whip it around and around ever so faster every rotation. If your string is flexible like Gravity is, the string would stretch until the rock breaks free. The same thing is happening to the Moon and gains 1.5″ every year further and further in altitude. No one knows exactly when it will happen, not to the day at least or even the century for that matter, but one day far into the future it will just break free from Earths gravitational grip and float off into possibly its own orbit around the Sun. Without the moon we cannot survive.

Therefore we know there is a meaning for you being here right now, its much more deeper, meaning and powerful than all the trivial shit going on. These distractions can be a big part in not letting you see the bigger picture, how to focus on the beauty of the universe and life itself (which is in one million billion percent a miracle that we are here at this exact time). Let these situations help you to grow and love harder than ever before. When you cant control what’s happening, challenge yourself to control they way you respond to what’s happening. Thats where your power is.To not reflect or speak badly or send more hate towards a single person. It’s ok to forgive without letting someone back into your life. Yes, they hurt you, but if you have it in your heart to forgive them - do so. Holding in that hatred only hurts you further in the end. It’s not a good feeling to want to hold onto. They don’t have to stay in your life, all of that further is up to you, but don’t always listen to others opinions - you must always always do what makes you happy and makes you free. It’s not about how people view you, it’s about how you feel about your own soul. Regardless of any state you are in, this is mainly your life, so don’t let anyone else take control. It’s ok to let go of toxic people without destroying them back. The only way out of suffering is to love with every part of you. You will find happiness again, in new towns, in new faces if you build a life on love. Everything in life is replaceable, except you.

I don't know if that helps anyone apart from me, everyone is on their own unique journey but I can only understand mine. The more free you are with yourself and the world the more you can enjoy it, that’s all I know. I just wanted to write something for this week anyway. I wish everyone who needs it a world of happiness. Never be afraid to speak out or seek help, you will find the world is a lot kinder than you feel, we need you here 🚀✨

I was trying to think of something that I would never want anyone to see a picture of and took a picture of it. Since it was too horrible to imagine, I decided to couple it with something that I always take a picture of. The result...my post-partum belly and my eyes.

Unfortunately, this is the only somewhat decent picture that wasn't lost of the many postpartum female timber rattlesnakes and neonates I found last summer.

on explore # 240 at 2009-02-06!

Witch-hazel (Hamamelis) is a genus of four species of flowering plants in the family Hamamelidaceae, with two species in North America (H. virginiana and H. vernalis), and one each in Japan (H. japonica) and China (H. mollis).

Hamamelis species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Feathered Thorn.

The name Witch has its origins in Middle English wiche, from the Old English wice, meaning "pliant" or "bendable". Hazel is derived from the use of the twigs as divining rods, just as hazel twigs were used in England.

They are popular ornamental plants, grown for their clusters of rich yellow to orange-red flowers which begin to expand in the autumn as or slightly before the leaves fall, and continue throughout the winter. Numerous cultivars have been selected for use as garden shrubs, many of them derived from the hybrid H. × intermedia Rehder (H. japonica × H. mollis).

The bark and leaves are astringent; the extract, also referred to as witch hazel, is used medicinally. Extracts from its bark and leaves are used in aftershave lotions and lotions for treating bruises and insect bites. Witch-hazel is the active ingredient in many hemorrhoid medications. It is also a common treatment for postpartum tearing of the perineum. The seeds contain a quantity of oil and are edible.

Loneliness is a complex and usually unpleasant emotional response to isolation. Loneliness typically includes anxious feelings about a lack of connection or communication with other beings, both in the present and extending into the future. As such, loneliness can be felt even when surrounded by other people and one who feels lonely, is lonely. The causes of loneliness are varied and include social, mental, emotional, and physical factors.

Research has shown that loneliness is prevalent throughout society, including people in marriages, relationships, families, veterans, and those with successful careers.[1] It has been a long explored theme in the literature of human beings since Classical antiquity. Loneliness has also been described as social pain—a psychological mechanism meant to motivate an individual to seek social connections.[2] Loneliness is often defined in terms of one's connectedness to others, or more specifically as "the unpleasant experience that occurs when a person's network of social relations is deficient in some important way".[3]

Common causes[edit]

People can experience loneliness for many reasons, and many life events may cause it, such as a lack of friendship relations during childhood and adolescence, or the physical absence of meaningful people around a person. At the same time, loneliness may be a symptom of another social or psychological problem, such as chronic depression.

Many people experience loneliness for the first time when they are left alone as infants. It is also a very common, though normally temporary, consequence of a breakup, divorce, or loss of any important long-term relationship. In these cases, it may stem both from the loss of a specific person and from the withdrawal from social circles caused by the event or the associated sadness.

The loss of a significant person in one's life will typically initiate a grief response; in this situation, one might feel lonely, even while in the company of others. Loneliness may also occur after the birth of a child (often expressed in postpartum depression), after marriage, or following any other socially disruptive event, such as moving from one's home town into an unfamiliar community, leading to homesickness. Loneliness can occur within unstable marriages or other close relationships of a similar nature, in which feelings present may include anger or resentment, or in which the feeling of love cannot be given or received. Loneliness may represent a dysfunction of communication, and can also result from places with low population densities in which there are comparatively few people to interact with. Loneliness can also be seen as a social phenomenon, capable of spreading like a disease. When one person in a group begins to feel lonely, this feeling can spread to others, increasing everybody's risk for feelings of loneliness.[4] People can feel lonely even when they are surrounded by other people.[5]

A twin study found evidence that genetics account for approximately half of the measurable differences in loneliness among adults, which was similar to the heritability estimates found previously in children. These genes operate in a similar manner in males and females. The study found no common environmental contributions to adult loneliness.[6]

Typology[edit]

Feeling lonely vs. being socially isolated[edit]

There is a clear distinction between feeling lonely and being socially isolated (for example, a loner). In particular, one way of thinking about loneliness is as a discrepancy between one's necessary and achieved levels of social interaction,[1] while solitude is simply the lack of contact with people. Loneliness is therefore a subjective experience; if a person thinks they are lonely, then they are lonely. People can be lonely while in solitude, or in the middle of a crowd. What makes a person lonely is the fact that they need more social interaction or a certain type of social interaction that is not currently available. A person can be in the middle of a party and feel lonely due to not talking to enough people. Conversely, one can be alone and not feel lonely; even though there is no one around that person is not lonely because there is no desire for social interaction. There have also been suggestions that each person has their own optimal level of social interaction. If a person gets too little or too much social interaction, this could lead to feelings of loneliness or over-stimulation.[7]

Solitude can have positive effects on individuals. One study found that, although time spent alone tended to depress a person's mood and increase feelings of loneliness, it also helped to improve their cognitive state, such as improving concentration. Furthermore, once the alone time was over, people's moods tended to increase significantly.[8] Solitude is also associated with other positive growth experiences, religious experiences, and identity building such as solitary quests used in rites of passages for adolescents.[9]

Loneliness can also play an important role in the creative process. In some people, temporary or prolonged loneliness can lead to notable artistic and creative expression, for example, as was the case with poets Emily Dickinson and Isabella di Morra, and numerous musicians[who?]. This is not to imply that loneliness itself ensures this creativity, rather, it may have an influence on the subject matter of the artist and more likely be present in individuals engaged in creative activities.[citation needed]

Transient vs. chronic loneliness[edit]

The other important typology of loneliness focuses on the time perspective.[10] In this respect, loneliness can be viewed as either transient or chronic. It has also been referred to as state and trait loneliness.

Transient (state) loneliness is temporary in nature, caused by something in the environment, and is easily relieved. Chronic (trait) loneliness is more permanent, caused by the person, and is not easily relieved.[11] For example, when a person is sick and cannot socialize with friends would be a case of transient loneliness. Once the person got better it would be easy for them to alleviate their loneliness. A person who feels lonely regardless of if they are at a family gathering, with friends, or alone is experiencing chronic loneliness. It does not matter what goes on in the surrounding environment, the experience of loneliness is always there.

Loneliness as a human condition[edit]

The existentialist school of thought views loneliness as the essence of being human. Each human being comes into the world alone, travels through life as a separate person, and ultimately dies alone. Coping with this, accepting it, and learning how to direct our own lives with some degree of grace and satisfaction is the human condition.[12]

Some philosophers, such as Sartre, believe in an epistemic loneliness in which loneliness is a fundamental part of the human condition because of the paradox between people's consciousness desiring meaning in life and the isolation and nothingness of the universe.[13] Conversely, other existentialist thinkers argue that human beings might be said to actively engage each other and the universe as they communicate and create, and loneliness is merely the feeling of being cut off from this process.

In his recent text, Evidence of Being: The Black Gay Cultural Renaissance and the Politics of Violence, Darius Bost draws from Heather Love's theorization of loneliness[14] to delineate the ways in which loneliness structures black gay feeling and literary, cultural productions. Bost limns, “As a form of negative affect, loneliness shores up the alienation, isolation, and pathologization of black gay men during the 1980s and early 1990s. But loneliness is also a form of bodily desire, a yearning for an attachment to the social and for a future beyond the forces that create someone’s alienation and isolation."[15]

Frequency[edit]

There are several estimates and indicators of loneliness. It has been estimated that approximately 60 million people in the United States, or 20% of the total population, feel lonely.[2] Another study found that 12% of Americans have no one with whom to spend free time or to discuss important matters.[16] Other research suggests that this rate has been increasing over time. The General Social Survey found that between 1985 and 2004, the number of people the average American discusses important matters with decreased from three to two. Additionally, the number of Americans with no one to discuss important matters with tripled[17] (though this particular study may be flawed[18]). In the UK research by Age UK shows half a million people more than 60 years old spend each day alone without social interaction and almost half a million more see and speak to no one for 5 or 6 days a week.[19] On the other hand, the Community Life Survey, 2016 to 2017, by the UK's Office for National Statistics, found that young adults in England aged 16 to 24 reported feeling lonely more often than those in older age groups.[20]

Loneliness appears to have intensified in every society in the world as modernization occurs. A certain amount of this loneliness appears to be related to greater migration, smaller household sizes, a larger degree of media consumption (all of which have positive sides as well in the form of more opportunities, more choice in family size, and better access to information), all of which relates to social capital.

Within developed nations, loneliness has shown the largest increases among two groups: seniors[21][22] and people living in low-density suburbs.[23][24] Seniors living in suburban areas are particularly vulnerable, for as they lose the ability to drive, they often become "stranded" and find it difficult to maintain interpersonal relationships.[25]

Loneliness is prevalent in vulnerable groups in society. In New Zealand the fourteen surveyed groups with the highest prevalence of loneliness most/all of the time in descending order are: disabled, recent migrants, low income households, unemployed, single parents, rural (rest of South Island), seniors aged 75+, not in the labour force, youth aged 15–24, no qualifications, not housing owner-occupier, not in a family nucleus, Māori, and low personal income.[26]

Americans seem to report more loneliness than any other country, though this finding may simply be an effect of greater research volume. A 2006 study in the American Sociological Review found that Americans on average had only two close friends in which to confide, which was down from an average of three in 1985. The percentage of people who noted having no such confidant rose from 10% to almost 25%, and an additional 19% said they had only a single confidant, often their spouse, thus raising the risk of serious loneliness if the relationship ended.[27] The modern office environment has been demonstrated to give rise to loneliness. This can be especially prevalent in individuals prone to social isolation who can interpret the business focus of co-workers for a deliberate ignoring of needs.[28]

Whether a correlation exists between Internet usage and loneliness is a subject of controversy, with some findings showing that Internet users are lonelier[29] and others showing that lonely people who use the Internet to keep in touch with loved ones (especially seniors) report less loneliness, but that those trying to make friends online became lonelier.[30] On the other hand, studies in 2002 and 2010 found that "Internet use was found to decrease loneliness and depression significantly, while perceived social support and self-esteem increased significantly"[31] and that the Internet "has an enabling and empowering role in people's lives, by increasing their sense of freedom and control, which has a positive impact on well-being or happiness."[32] The one apparently unequivocal finding of correlation is that long driving commutes correlate with dramatically higher reported feelings of loneliness (as well as other negative health impacts).[33][34]

Effects[edit]

Mental health[edit]

Loneliness by Hans Thoma (National Museum in Warsaw)

Loneliness has been linked with depression, and is thus a risk factor for suicide.[35] Émile Durkheim has described loneliness, specifically the inability or unwillingness to live for others, i.e. for friendships or altruistic ideas, as the main reason for what he called egoistic suicide.[36][unreliable source?] In adults, loneliness is a major precipitant of depression and alcoholism.[37] People who are socially isolated may report poor sleep quality, and thus have diminished restorative processes.[38] Loneliness has also been linked with a schizoid character type in which one may see the world differently and experience social alienation, described as the self in exile.[39]

While the long term effects of extended periods of loneliness are little understood, it has been noted that people who are isolated or experience loneliness for a long period of time fall into a “ontological crisis” or “ontological insecurity,” where they are not sure if they or their surroundings exist, and if they do, exactly who or what they are, creating torment, suffering, and despair to the point of palpability within the thoughts of the person.[40][41]

In children, a lack of social connections is directly linked to several forms of antisocial and self-destructive behavior, most notably hostile and delinquent behavior. In both children and adults, loneliness often has a negative impact on learning and memory. Its disruption of sleep patterns can have a significant impact on the ability to function in everyday life.[35]

Research from a large-scale study published in the journal Psychological Medicine, showed that "lonely millennials are more likely to have mental health problems, be out of work and feel pessimistic about their ability to succeed in life than their peers who feel connected to others, regardless of gender or wealth.”[42][43]

In 2004, the United States Department of Justice published a study indicating that loneliness increases suicide rates profoundly among juveniles, with 62% of all suicides that occurred within juvenile facilities being among those who either were, at the time of the suicide, in solitary confinement or among those with a history of being housed thereof.[40]

Pain, depression, and fatigue function as a symptom cluster and thus may share common risk factors. Two longitudinal studies with different populations demonstrated that loneliness was a risk factor for the development of the pain, depression, and fatigue symptom cluster over time. These data also highlight the health risks of loneliness; pain, depression, and fatigue often accompany serious illness and place people at risk for poor health and mortality.[44]

Physical health[edit]

Chronic loneliness can be a serious, life-threatening health condition. It has been found to be associated with an increased risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease.[45] Loneliness shows an increased incidence of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity.[46]

Loneliness is shown to increase the concentration of cortisol levels in the body.[46] Prolonged, high cortisol levels can cause anxiety, depression, digestive problems, heart disease, sleep problems, and weight gain.[47]

″Loneliness has been associated with impaired cellular immunity as reflected in lower natural killer (NK) cell activity and higher antibody titers to the Epstein Barr Virus and human herpes viruses".[46] Because of impaired cellular immunity, loneliness among young adults shows vaccines, like the flu vaccine, to be less effective.[46] Data from studies on loneliness and HIV positive men suggests loneliness increases disease progression.[46]

Physiological mechanisms link to poor health[edit]

There are a number of potential physiological mechanisms linking loneliness to poor health outcomes. In 2005, results from the American Framingham Heart Study demonstrated that lonely men had raised levels of Interleukin 6 (IL-6), a blood chemical linked to heart disease. A 2006 study conducted by the Center for Cognitive and Social Neuroscience at the University of Chicago found loneliness can add thirty points to a blood pressure reading for adults over the age of fifty. Another finding, from a survey conducted by John Cacioppo from the University of Chicago, is that doctors report providing better medical care to patients who have a strong network of family and friends than they do to patients who are alone. Cacioppo states that loneliness impairs cognition and willpower, alters DNA transcription in immune cells, and leads over time to high blood pressure.[2] Lonelier people are more likely to show evidence of viral reactivation than less lonely people.[48] Lonelier people also have stronger inflammatory responses to acute stress compared with less lonely people; inflammation is a well known risk factor for age-related diseases.[49]

When someone feels left out of a situation, they feel excluded and one possible side effect is for their body temperature to decrease. When people feel excluded blood vessels at the periphery of the body may narrow, preserving core body heat. This class protective mechanism is known as vasoconstriction.[50]

Treatments and prevention[edit]

There are many different ways used to treat loneliness, social isolation, and clinical depression. The first step that most doctors recommend to patients is therapy. Therapy is a common and effective way of treating loneliness and is often successful. Short-term therapy, the most common form for lonely or depressed patients, typically occurs over a period of ten to twenty weeks. During therapy, emphasis is put on understanding the cause of the problem, reversing the negative thoughts, feelings, and attitudes resulting from the problem, and exploring ways to help the patient feel connected. Some doctors also recommend group therapy as a means to connect with other sufferers and establish a support system.[51] Doctors also frequently prescribe anti-depressants to patients as a stand-alone treatment, or in conjunction with therapy. It may take several attempts before a suitable anti-depressant medication is found.[52]

Alternative approaches to treating depression are suggested by many doctors. These treatments include exercise, dieting, hypnosis, electro-shock therapy, acupuncture, and herbs, amongst others. Many patients find that participating in these activities fully or partially alleviates symptoms related to depression.[53]

Another treatment for both loneliness and depression is pet therapy, or animal-assisted therapy, as it is more formally known. Studies and surveys, as well as anecdotal evidence provided by volunteer and community organizations, indicate that the presence of animal companions such as dogs, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs can ease feelings of depression and loneliness among some sufferers. Beyond the companionship the animal itself provides there may also be increased opportunities for socializing with other pet owners. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention there are a number of other health benefits associated with pet ownership, including lowered blood pressure and decreased levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.[54]

Nostalgia has also been found to have a restorative effect, counteracting loneliness by increasing perceived social support.[55]

A 1989 study found that the social aspect of religion had a significant negative association with loneliness among elderly people. The effect was more consistent than the effect of social relationships with family and friends, and the subjective concept of religiosity had no significant effect on loneliness.[56]

One study compared the effectiveness of four interventions: improving social skills, enhancing social support, increasing opportunities for social interaction, addressing abnormal social cognition (faulty thoughts and patterns of thoughts). The results of the study indicated that all interventions were effective in reducing loneliness, possibly with the exception of social skill training. Results of the meta-analysis suggest that correcting maladaptive social cognition offers the best chance of reducing loneliness.

Adam's Song" is a song recorded by the American rock band Blink-182 for its third studio album, Enema of the State (1999). It was released as the third and final single from Enema of the State on September 5, 2000 through MCA Records. "Adam's Song" shares writing credits between the band's guitarist Tom DeLonge and bassist Mark Hoppus, but Hoppus was the primary composer of the song. The track concerns suicide, depression and loneliness. It incorporates a piano in its bridge section, and was regarded as one of the most serious songs the band had written to that point.

Hoppus was inspired by the loneliness he experienced while on tour; while his bandmates had significant others to return home to, he was single. He was also influenced by a teen suicide letter he read in a magazine. The song takes the form of a suicide note, and contains lyrical allusions to the Nirvana song "Come as You Are". "Adam's Song" was one of the last songs to be written and recorded for Enema of the State, and it was nearly left off the album. Though Hoppus worried the subject matter was too depressing, his bandmates were receptive to its message. The song was produced by Jerry Finn.

"Adam's Song" peaked at number two on the US Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart; it was also a top 25 hit in Canada and Italy, but did not replicate its success on other charts. It received praise from music critics, who considered it a change of pace from the trio's more lighthearted singles. The single's music video, a hit on MTV, was directed by Liz Friedlander. Though the song was intended to inspire hope to those struggling with depression, it encountered controversy when a student of Columbine High School committed suicide with the track on repeat in 2000.

Character Head Space Story

Aerilin Volkova

*DEALS WITH MENTAL DISORDERS, AND SUICIDAL THOUGHTS.*

She sat rigidly perched on the edge of her chair, her one working eye would roam over the form of her sleeping infant. The little girl’s eyes were perfectly creased, her button nose, her little chubby cheeks and ohhhh that head of hair. She had gotten her hair, raven colored curls clung to the infant's head as she snoozed, oblivious to her mother hovering over her like an overprotective Lioness. She had never been more in love with a human being than she was with this tiny one. Aerilin’s hand dangled over the crib, she hadn’t slept in days, every time she tried things would move in corners making her eyes snap open. Nightmares riddled her even while awake, but the moment the giant tried to close her eyes, she hallucinated. Images of giant grotesque monsters, falling from ledges, losing Lairisa. They plagued her sick mind. She had no idea that she was suffering from PostPartum Psychosis, she truly was just chalking it up to sleep deprivation and stress. The last couple months had been the worst, finding out her mother had LIED to her since birth about who her father was, breaking up with her fiance, Lolli being kidnapped and tortured, giving birth 3 days late in her bed pulling the baby out herself. It had all mounted on top of the Russian, and the mental disease took its foothold the moment it could.

Suddenly there was something looming over the two, its nasty and gnarled shadow hung over the crib claw like fingers looked as if they were going to reach for Lai and pluck her out of the bed. Aerilin screamed and grabbed Lai, startling the baby awake but she made no sound as her pale blue eyes, Bastion’s eyes, looked up at Aeri. “Oh baby...I am sorry. I...Go back to sleep.” She cooed softly at her pushing her plump piercing filled lips to the baby's forehead. She rocked her back and forth, singing under her breath till Lai’s eyes slowly closed again, and Aeri would gently put her back in the crib.

Pushing herself up out of the chair, she would run her hands hard over her face. Stress, that’s all this was, stress and the need for sleep. She couldn’t admit to someone that she didn’t feel right, Aeri was the one who was always strong for everyone else. Helping them through anything, holding them up when they wanted to fall, how many times had she done this for everyone in her life? Why did it feel like no one was doing it for her? She had Lolli, but Lolli was broken right now. Jenia had ran, afraid of the past that she seemed to never keep out of reach of. Bastion, well...they just didn’t work anymore. Kai, she couldn’t bother Kai...she was pregnant and didn’t need the stress. Roman, he was out doing God’s knew what. Aeri was alone, with only Lairisa to lean on, and she couldn’t lean on her baby for mental support.

She stumbled to the window, pressing her arm to it, then she rested her forehead on her arm staring out the window. She thought of her text messages, she didn’t really remember sending them out, but in them she had spoke of death. Dying seemed great, she would be free...she could sleep...Lai had Lolli...Her dad...Did anyone really need her? She could just jump out the window, it was three stories high but...if she angled it right...well she could crack her head open and bleed out before anyone came. She shook her head, feeling the hot wetness of tears she hadn’t known she was crying. “Aeri. You can’t die. You can’t think like this. Lai needs you. You need you.” She spoke to herself quietly. Death was there, and he was waiting. He had his hand out reached for her, how many times had Aeri almost reached out and taken it? Maybe there was something wrong...maybe she did need to ask for help. She didn’t want to die? Did she?

American actor and producer Tom Cruise (1962) became with his charismatic smile the most successful member of Hollywood's Brat Pack, the golden boys and girls of the 1980s. Top Gun (1985) made him an action star, but with his roles in The Color of Money (1986), Rain Man (1988) and Born on the Fourth of July (1989) he proved himself to be an all-round star and excellent actor. During the 1990s, he continued to combine action blockbusters like Mission Impossibe (1996) with highly acclaimed dramas like A Few Good Men (1992), Eyes Wide Shut (1999) and Magnolia (1999). He received more praise for his roles in Minority Report (2000) and Collateral (2002) and was for years one of the highest paid actors in the world. Although he continued to score major box office hits with the Mission Impossible franchise, his later work was overshadowed by his outspoken attitude about Scientology which alienated him from many of his viewers.

Tom Cruise was born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV in 1962 in Syracuse, NY. He is the only son of Mary Lee (Pfeiffer), a special education teacher, and Thomas Cruise Mapother III, an electrical engineer. He has three sisters: Marian, Lee Anne De Vette, and Cass. In 1974, when Cruise was 12, his parents divorced. Young Tom spent his boyhood always on the move, and by the time he was 14 he had attended 15 different schools in the U.S. and Canada. He finally settled in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, with his mother and her new husband. Deeply religious, he enrolled in a Franciscan seminary with the ambition to join the priesthood. He dropped out after one year. In high school, he was a wrestler until he was sidelined by a knee injury. Soon taking up acting, he found that the activity served a dual purpose: performing satiated his need for attention, while the memorisation aspect of acting helped him come to grips with his dyslexia. Moving to New York in 1980, he studied drama at the prestigious Neighborhood Playhouse, in conjunction with the Actors Studio, New School University, New York. He signed with CAA (Creative Artists Agency) and began acting in films. His film debut was a small part in Endless Love (Franco Zeffirelli, 1981), starring Brooke Shields. It was followed by a major supporting role as a crazed military academy student in Taps (Harold Becker, 1981), starring George C. Scott and Timothy Hutton. In 1983, Cruise was part of the ensemble cast of The Outsiders (Francis Ford Coppola, 1983). The Hollywood press corps began touting Cruise as one of the 'Brat Pack', a group of twenty-something actors who seemed on the verge of taking over the movie industry in the early 1980s. Cruise's first big hit was the coming-of-age comedy Risky Business (Paul Brickman, 1983), in which he entered film-trivia infamy with the scene wherein he celebrates his parents' absence by dancing around the living room in his underwear. From the outset, he exhibited an undeniable box office appeal to both male and female audiences. Cruise played the male lead in the dark fantasy Legend (Ridley Scott, 1985) and the action film Top Gun (Tony Scott, 1986) with Kelly McGillis and Val Kilmer. Top Gun (1986) established Cruise as an action star. However, he refused to be pigeonholed and followed it up with a solid characterisation of a fledgling pool shark in The Color of Money (Martin Scorsese, 1986), for which co-star Paul Newman earned an Academy Award. In 1988, he played the brother of an autistic savant played by Dustin Hoffman in the drama Rain Man (Barry Levinson, 1988). However, Cruise had not yet totally convinced critics he was more than a pretty face while he also starred in Cocktail (Roger Donaldson, 1988), which earned him a nomination for the Razzie Award for Worst Actor. His chance came when he played paraplegic Vietnam vet Ron Kovic in Born on the Fourth of July (Oliver Stone, 1989). For his role, he won a Golden Globe Award and received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor.

In 1990 Tom Cruise renounced his devout Catholic beliefs and embraced The Church Of Scientology claiming that Scientology teachings had cured him of dyslexia that had plagued him all of his life. He was introduced to Scientology by his ex-wife Mimi Rogers. Though Cruise's bankability faltered a bit with the expensive disappointment Far and Away (Ron Howard, 1990) with his then-wife Nicole Kidman, A Few Good Men (Rob Reiner, 1992) brought him back into the game. By 1994, the star was undercutting his own leading man image with the role of the slick, dastardly vampire Lestat in the long-delayed film adaptation of the Anne Rice novel Interview with the Vampire (Neil Jordan, 1994), opposite Brad Pitt and Antonio Banderas. Although the author was vehemently opposed to Cruise's casting, Rice famously reversed her decision upon seeing the actor's performance, and publicly praised Cruise's portrayal. In 1996, Cruise scored financial success with the reboot of Mission: Impossible (Brian De Palma, 1996), but it was with his multilayered performance in Jerry Maguire (Cameron Crowe, 1996), that Cruise proved once again why he is considered a major Hollywood player. For Jerry Maguire, he won another Golden Globe and received his second Oscar nomination. According to IMDb, Cruise is the first actor in history to star in five consecutive films that grossed $100 million in the United States: A Few Good Men (1992), the thriller The Firm (Sydney Pollack, 1993), Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994), Mission: Impossible (1996) and Jerry Maguire (1996). 1999 saw Cruise reunited onscreen with Kidman in a project of a very different sort, Eyes Wide Shut (Stanley Kubrick, 1990). Hal Erickson at AllMovie: "The film, which was the director's last, had been the subject of controversy, rumour, and speculation since it began filming. It opened to curious critics and audiences alike across the nation and was met with a violently mixed response. However, it allowed Cruise to once again take part in film history, further solidifying his position as one of Hollywood's most well-placed movers and shakers. Cruise's enviable position was again solidified later in 1999 when he earned a third Golden Globe and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as a loathsome 'sexual prowess' guru in Magnolia (Paul Thomas Anderson, 1999)."

In 2000, Tom Cruise scored again when he returned as an international agent Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible II (John Woo, 2000), which proved to be one of the summer blockbusters. Like its predecessor, it was the highest-grossing film of the year and had a mixed critical reception. He then reteamed with Jerry Maguire director Cameron Crowe for a remake of the Spanish film Abre los Ojos/Open Your Eyes (Alejandro Amenábar, 1997) titled Vanilla Sky (Cameron Crowe, 2001) with Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz. Though Vanilla Sky's sometimes surreal trappings found the film receiving a mixed reception at the box office, the same could not be said for the following year's massively successful Sci-Fi chase film Minority Report (Steven Spielberg, 2001), or of the historical epic The Last Samurai (Edward Zwick, 2003). For his next film, Cruise picked a role unlike any he'd ever played; starring as a sociopathic hitman in the psychological thriller Collateral (Michael Mann, 2004). He received major praise for his departure from the good-guy characters he'd built his career on, and for doing so convincingly. He teamed up with Spielberg again for the second time in three years with an epic adaptation of the H.G. Wells alien invasion story War of the Worlds (Steven Spielberg, 2005). The summer blockbuster was in some ways overshadowed, however, by a cloud of negative publicity. It began, when Cruise became suddenly vocal about his beliefs in Scientology, the religion created by science fiction author L. Ron Hubbard. Cruise publicly denounced actress Brooke Shields for taking medication to combat her postpartum depression, going so far as to call the psychological science a "Nazi science" in an Entertainment Weekly interview. In 2005, he was interviewed by Matt Lauer for The Today Show during which time he appeared to be distractingly argumentative in his insistence that psychiatry is a "pseudoscience," and in a Der Spiegel interview, he was quoted as saying that Scientology has the only successful drug rehabilitation program in the world. This behaviour caused a stirring of public opinion about Cruise, as did his relationship with 27-year-old actress Katie Holmes. The two announced their engagement in the spring of 2005, and Cruise's enthousiasm for his new romantic interest created more curiosity about his mental stability. He appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, where he jumped up and down on the couch, professing his love for the newly-Scientologist Holmes. The actor's new public image alienated many of his viewers. As he geared up for the spring release of Mission: Impossible III (J.J. Abrams, 2006), his ability to sell a film based almost purely on his own likability was in question for the first time in 20 years. Despite this, the film was more positively received by critics than the previous films in the series and grossed nearly $400 million at the box office. Cruise moved on to making headlines on the business front when he and corporate partner Paula Wagner in 2006 officially " took over" the United Artists studio, which was all but completely defunct. One of the first films to be produced by the new United Artists was the tense political thriller Lions for Lambs (Robert Redford, 2007), with Redford, Cruise, and Meryl Streep. The film took an earnest and unflinching look at the politics behind the Iraq war but was a commercial disappointment. This was followed by the World War II thriller Valkyrie (Bryan Singer, 2008) with Kenneth Branagh and Carice van Houten.

Tom Cruise would find a solid footing as the 2010s progressed, with blockbusters like Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (Brad Bird, 2011) and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (Christopher McQuarrie, 2015). He is known for doing many of his own stunts in these films, even exceptionally dangerous ones. The Mission Impossible franchise earned a total of 3 billion dollars worldwide. Cruise reteamed with Cameron Diaz in the action-comedy Knight and Day (James Mangold, 2010). He starred as Jack Reacher in the film adaptation of British author Lee Child's 2005 novel One Shot (Christopher McQuarrie, 2012). He also starred in big-budget fantasy projects like Oblivion (Joseph Kosinski, 2013) and Edge of Tomorrow (Doug Liman, 2014). Tom Cruised was married three times. His first wife was actress Mimi Rogers, with whom he was married from 1987 till their divorce in 1990. His second marriage with Nicole Kidman from 1990 till 2001. They adopted two children Isabella Jane Cruise (1992) and Connor Antony Cruise (1995). he lived together with Vanilla Sky (2001) co-star Penélope Cruz from 2001 - 2004. His 2006 marriage to Katie Holmes ended in divorce in 2012. They have one daughter, Surie Cruise (2006). Recently, Cruise returned on the screen as Ethan Hunt in the sixth installment of the Mission Impossible series, Mission: Impossible – Fallout (Christopher McQuarrie, 2018). In 2020, he will also return as Pete " Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick (Joseph Kosinski, 2020), in which Val Kilmer will also reprise his role from the first film.

And, please check out our blog European Film Star Postcards.

You never really notice how beautiful the world is until a storm has passed. I feel so much love for people and I’m not sure how to put it into words. I hadn’t been well in a long time. June/July 2017 my psychosis started, it started with very intense paranoia and anxiety over being watched, having people in my life I just felt intensely uneasy with and it spiralled. Everything was exploited. By January 2018 everyone was watching and it was the scariest thing ever to have your mental state watched so publicly. All I could feel was danger. I could no longer distinguish between what was the real dangers and what wasn’t really happening. Everyone was a danger to me by that point, and everyone wanted to hurt my son. We weren’t well enough to travel and all I knew was I needed to be out of the country to be safe. So many dangerous people were on a hunt to find out where we lived/where we were and it was terrifying. The only thing I could do was tell everyone, simply everyone we were out of the country, but that made everything worse. I believed we would be safe if everyone believed I was dead having failing that I believed he would only ever be safe if I was dead. Postpartum psychosis will probably always be the most terrifying experience I will go through, and still go through to this day - I will sometimes still wake up at 2am with so much fear someone is trying to get into the house to hurt him. I’ve seen things and felt things this year that will never leave me. But through your darkest times there will always be light. There will be certain people and places that will change you and make you want to change. The love I have felt for people over the past few months I cannot describe. The friends I do not deserve that helped kept us safe, that offered there homes to us, words will never be enough. To every single person that reached out, I don’t even know how to begin saying thankyou. I’m still on such a long journey to better my health and better myself. But the fact I’m on the earth to enjoy the good moments is something I will always be so grateful for. I’m not good with words, I just needed to say thankyou to everyone that made this possible right now.

I'm looking forward to a long break from social media now, reclaiming my privacy and personal life back and returning with new photography work :) see you all soon x

Witch-hazel (Hamamelis) is a genus of four species of flowering plants in the family Hamamelidaceae, with two species in North America (H. virginiana and H. vernalis), and one each in Japan (H. japonica) and China (H. mollis).

They are deciduous shrubs or (rarely) small trees growing to 3-8 m tall, rarely to 12 m tall. The leaves are alternately arranged, oval, 4-16 cm long and 3-11 cm broad, with a smooth or wavy margin. The horticultural name means "together with fruit"; its fruit, flowers, and next year's leaf buds all appear on the branch simultaneously, a rarity among trees. The flowers are sometimes produced on the leafless stems in winter, thus one alternative name for the plant, "Winterbloom". Each flower has four slender strap-shaped petals 1-2 cm long, pale to dark yellow, orange, or red. The fruit is a two-part capsule 1 cm long, containing a single 5 mm glossy black seed in each of the two parts; the capsule splits explosively at maturity in the autumn about 8 months after flowering, ejecting the seeds with sufficient force to fly for distances of up to 10 m, thus another alternative name "Snapping Hazel".

The Persian Ironwood, a closely related tree formerly treated as Hamamelis persica, is now given a genus of its own, as Parrotia persica, as it differs in the flowers not having petals. Other closely allied genera are Parrotiopsis, Fothergilla and Sycopsis (see under Hamamelidaceae). Witch-hazels are not closely related to the hazels.

Nessie's black and blue phase...

I dearly wish this book had existed 39 years ago when I was experiencing postpartum depression...just to have known that I wasn't alone...
