A Portfolio of Carnegie Libraries. Apparently this accompanied the book by Theodore Koch - although not the facsimile copy I have. A wonderful folder full of sheets covering all the illustrations in the book - lots of plans and photos of Carnegie libraries.
I met an architectural historian today, who has been researching the Carnegie legacy for years. Lovely to talk with her, I hope to be able to help with her latest project.
One of my favorite photos. I enjoyed looking at the early morning distant fog and it reminded me of snow on the horizon. I also think it gives an example of using the rule of thirds with the tree on the left side and also negative space. I used photo editing to bring the tree in the foreground in to focus a little more clearly, while leaving the background foggy.

You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fist at the gates saying,
"I have come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son and the father,
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
It's time now!
My time now!
Give me my
Give me my wings!"...
Untitled By Xuan Li
The darkness ate
the silence at night.
The pearls fall,
like tears for its missing mate.
They all
hit the jade plate.
The rhythms of them rolling
goes round and round.
As driving on a mountain road,
it’s the sound of a string instrument.

1. This photo is all about man-made lines, created by my jerky arm movements with a 2-second shutter speed. There are four main white curved lines, matched up against four smaller blue curved lines in double pairs. The blue light source in the background is the only color amidst an otherwise black-and-white photo. The hint of blue wasn’t noticed until I looked at the picture on the computer, but it was a welcome addition. I heightened the shadow level in Picasa to both bring out the blue and give a darker transition in the bottom left of the frame.
2. The subject is separated by value, being the only light source in a night shot. The lines that the subject consists of are few, bright and strong in contrast to the numerous, dark and subdued streaks of light in the background. The subject is a pair of house lights about 30 feet away. The background streaks are rain drops on a window, refracting small portions of the ambient light. Thus the foreground is actually far behind the background I guess.
3. I would say the light is hard, with the light itself being the subject. The light is cold and sharp in the case of the subject, dithered and muted with the background. All the light comes from the background, shining directly into the camera.
4. In earlier shots, I attempted to focus on the rain drops themselves with a macro setting, close to the window. With this shot, and a few before it, I opted to turn off macro, back up, and zoom in around half way. This made the subject far more sharp. ISO was droppped to 80, night portrait turned on, and the flash turned off. Though I cannot set the shutter manually, I managed to get it up to 2 seconds in length by these efforts to create the distortion of light I wanted. White balance set at tungsten was the most accurate according to the LCD screen preview and so was used. Numerous efforts were made until the subject filled the frame just right. Randomness was a strong factor of how the photo turned out.
5. I was definitely going for abstract with this one. Though it is obvious I shot a light source, I would like to think the raindrop diffusion effect was a bit mysterious. In the poem, the words describing motion stood out to me the most—fall, rolling, round and round. I placed the subject above the negative space in an attempt to create a sense of falling. Darkness and silence inspired me to take this outside and at night. Tears gave me the idea to use rain to refract and diffuse the light.

The song is about the collapse of the World Trade Center in New York and the conspiracy theories. Still hard to believe what happened that day! Very sad.
