Working again today. Can't wait for some time off soon as I've only had 1 day off this xmas.
Went to the cinema this evening and watched Sherlock Holmes 2. It was good and the pick and mix was ace!

As a photographer, the southwest quadrant of Washington, D.C. is fascinating to me (and, obviously, photogenic).
It's a huge contrast in...life. On the one hand, you have the incredibly gentrified area of the Wharf with upscale restaurants, dockings for yachts and pleasurecraft large and small, the best fresh seafood market in town (this is not an opinion), and a walking promenade. This is the "shiny" part of southwest. Historically, the entire quadrant was for the poorer and working class in town. If you were to follow the southwest walking trail, you'll see some interesting pictures of how this area used to look about 100 years ago -- when it was mostly the poorest housing available. (Even dating back 60 years further to the Civil War, there was a lot of action here. One of the original forts in the city -- now Fort McNair -- was built on the point where the Anacostia River dumps into the Potomac.)
Prior to the late 1950s, you would find housing almost on the level of what you can find nowadays in third world countries. There are still remnants of this type of housing in the neighborhood.
Then, suddenly, around 1960, a renaissance took place. Many of the slums were razed for block apartment housing, and a good deal of that still exists, too.
So in the end, you have a mix of three eras of history going on in this small area, oftentimes two or more of them visible within the same frame: pre-1960s, the 60s, and modern-day-chic. It's easily walkable from the Mall (roughly a mile south) and the Waterfront metro station is in the heart of the neighborhood (at 4th & M Streets SW).
