The site of a dragonfly nymph emerging from the water and crawling up a stem, where it sheds its skin to reveal an adult dragonfly is well documented, however, this is just the final stage of a series of moults that have occurred throughout the dragonfly's life. Each moult allowing the nymph to grow beyond the confines of its rigid exoskeleton and facilitating a gradual metamorphosis towards the final adult stage.
Although the earlier moults are less spectacular transformations than the final moult to the flying adult dragonfly, these intermediate moults still bring about subtle changes, including a steady development of the wing buds. Look out for the wing buds splitting and raising at the outset of the moult.
By the time it emerges from the water a hawker nymph will have moulted 12-15 times.
