This pointy (Index, to the left) and not-so-pointy (Pilot to the right) pair of mountain landmarks is visible from several points along the western corridor of US highway 212, AKA, the Beartooth Highway. I always stop at a couple of favorite points to look, and this day, I got great views through the clear, bright air.
Pilot & Index are not too far east from Yellowstone National Park's Northeast Entrance, and are most easily spotted when approaching from the east.
Pilot Butte rests atop White Mountain in Southwestern Wyoming, and has served as a navigation aid to travelers since the pioneer times. This common raven serves as our personal guide to this landmark.

The unmistakable Pilot Mountain. Viewable from 20+ miles away, this beauty is part of the Pilot Mountain State Park and has numerous hiking trails, water access points, overlooks, and camping spots available. It is one of the great North Carolina state parks that you should definitely check out!

Pilot whales are actually dolphins, not whales. They are the second largest dolphin, after orcas.

Victoria Pilot on the 3rd Feb 1983 was 25182 seen here moving some vans from the back of a train which had just arrived from Red Bank over in to the bay on the North side of the station.
The pilot was very busy in the early evening performing such duties so much so that if a freight required banking the at train would have to wait until a lull in shunting activities.

Not sure who was piloting our boat as captain Irineu takes a break, gazing at the fading daylight on the waters of Rio Erepecuru.
A-wings are maintenance-heavy and prone to breakdowns, as this Rebel pilot has just learned. She has crashed relatively unharmed but finds herself in a desert with just a canteen of water and her sidearm.

The guide Nico gets us so close to the whales that I knew a wide angle shot was possible. There were about 20-25 in the pod but they weren't doing much - just basking which didn't make for good shots. We will try again. If anyone really wants to see pilot whales and dolphins - go to Los Gigantes port and look for the yellow boat. These guys are by far the best.
A rough day at Fremantle. with a pilot boat ploughiing into the swell. Strong Southerlies this week have seen several boats on the rocks.
A view of Pilot (11,708 ft) and Index (11,313 ft) Peaks from the pilot-index overlook on Beartooth highway. Both peaks were formed by melting/retreating glaciers that eroded a lot of hillsides. Still seen is one of the glaciers in between the two peaks. Pilot Peak (the pointy one) is a glacial horn, a pyramid of rock carved by four glaciers while Index Peak (to the right) was also carved by glaciers but looks little blunted at the top.
This is the northern edge of the Absoraka Range, an eroded mass of lava, ash, and mudflows that began forming 50 million years ago.
The Beartooth highway is an All-American Road that has been called "the most beautiful drive in America," by late CBS correspondent Charles Kuralt. The Beartooth highway is the section of U.S. Highway 212 between Red Lodge, Montana and Cooke City, Montana. It traces a series of steep zigzags and switchbacks, along the Montana-Wyoming border to the 10,947 ft (3,337 m) high Beartooth Pass. The approximate elevation rise is from 5,200 ft (1,600 m) to 8,000 ft (2,400 m) in 12 mi (19 km) in the most daring landscapes.
