SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii—Yesterday, nearly 20,000 local residents, military families, community members, and visitors gathered at Schofield Barracks in Wahiawa to celebrate Independence Day. The headline act, Stone Temple Pilots, was preceded by an Army band and other nationally acclaimed performers who entertained the crowd. Attendees enjoyed numerous food and beverage vendors, keiki rides, and games.
A highlight of the event was the Special Operations Command "Commandos" freefall parachute team, who dropped into the event from 3,000 feet, bringing the American flag, the Hawaii state flag, and the A flag. Every state flag was honored and saluted with a cannon fire, followed by the national anthem and "Hawai‘i Pono‘ī."
The celebration concluded at 9 PM with a spectacular 12-minute fireworks show put on by the Army Garrison, Hawaii, providing a fitting finale to the festivities.
