This picture illustrates a shirt that would be perceived as against the school's dress code. This is an example of violence in school communities because it sexualises students and forces them to conform to rules of what they can and cannot do with their own bodies. This type of control is almost exclusively exerted over women and girls and hardly ever over men and boys. I always hear people saying that dressing a certain way will distract the boys. The problem is not my shirt, it’s the fact that boys and even adults are sexualising young, often female students. If you cannot look at shoulders or a midriff without getting distracted perhaps you should learn more self-control. It is sad that my younger sisters in elementary school are told that they cannot wear a sundress at school if it has spaghetti straps. They have absolutely no understanding of why it is unacceptable. My little cousin in kindergarten will also soon learn that it is “unacceptable” to wear spaghetti straps in school; but why? Are kindergarteners trying to be sexy and distract their peers? Of course not. They might just like to wear that style of dress. However they will learn that society intends to control female behaviour by dictating what is too short, and what is too revealing. Girls who dress in certain ways are also looked down upon; everybody should be able to dress however makes them feel confident. Students should be able to express themselves and dress the way they would like to dress. Girls also have a stricter dress code which emphasizes how society tries to control women and their bodies. A solution to this issue is to reevaluate the dress code so that students are allowed to express themselves freely without being judged and sexualized.
This was an attempt to show how we perceive the size of the moon when on the horizon, compared with how its appears smaller as it rises. This image also shows how the colour of the moon changes from an Orange to a pale yellow in its early stages of moonrise. I started off with a foreground image of the Malahide marina at 10mm. I then changed to a 70-200mm zoom lens. I started taking imageds every 20s at 200mm, and then slowly changing down the zoom for each image. By the time the clouds arrived, I was down to approximately 100mm on the zoom lens. Ideally I find that at 70mm zoom, the Moon and Sun appear about as my eye sees its size when I photograph it. As I never managed to get the zoom down to 70mm. I had to change the image size to bring this approximation to resemble the eyes view. In the end I didn't use each image at 20s intervals. I went for every second image as I thought it looked less compressed against the sky.

Happisburgh Cottage, perceived whilst on #KontaminationPeregrination scooter movements. Many dwellings along this road have been lost to the coastal erosion here. This one survives, for now in its own liminal state.
Inspired by a perceived lack of romance in the Minnesota tundra, Egg & Sperm :: Hide & Seek is an adult hide-and-seek game repeating throughout the night. It eggs on participants to share connections. Four members of the public per rotation wear glowing Sperm helmets and count while a large Egg rolls to a hiding location. When Sperm find the Egg and lays hands on it, the Egg glows more intensely. Once fully illuminated, the Egg is ushered back to the start point and the game begins again.
Playing with contact, this game electrifies connections between spectators, objects, and participants by offering a fun way to contemplate our motivations. Egg & Sperm uses technology to bring people closer together, physically as well as metaphorically. By exaggerating technology’s role at the center of the human quest for love, this work plays on sex and sexuality’s electrifying components. In emphasizing the body’s physicality, the artist hopes to inspire participating individuals into unplanned acts of contact.

The original French edition of “In Search of the Castaways” was published by Hetzel in 1867-1868 as “Les Enfants du Capitaine Grant” (The Children of Captain Grant). It included 170 engravings by Edouard Riou which are also present in this 1873 English-language edition.
The book tells the story of the quest for Captain Grant of the “Britannia.” After finding a bottle the captain had cast into the ocean after the “Britannia” is shipwrecked, Lord and Lady Glenarvan of Scotland contact Mary and Robert, the young daughter and son of Captain Grant, through an announcement in a newspaper. The government refuses to launch a rescue expedition, but Lord and Lady Glenarvan, moved by the children's condition, decide to do it themselves. The main difficulty is that the coordinates of the wreckage are mostly erased, and only the latitude (37 degrees) is known; thus, the expedition would have to circumnavigate the 37th parallel south. The bottle was retrieved from a shark's stomach, so it is impossible to trace its origin by the currents. Remaining clues consist of a few words in three languages. They are re-interpreted several times throughout the novel to make various destinations seem likely.
Lord Glenarvan makes it his quest to find Grant; together with his wife, Grant's children and the crew of his yacht, the Duncan, they set off for South America. An unexpected passenger in the form of French geographer Jacques Paganel (he missed his steamer to India by accidentally boarding on the Duncan) joins the search. They explore Patagonia, Tristan da Cunha Island, Amsterdam Island, and Australia (a pretext to describe the flora, fauna, and geography of numerous places to the targeted audience). They face many challenges on their journey– avalanche, hurricane, flood, tornado, erupting volcano, wolves, head-hunters, cannibals, you name it. It’s one of Verne’s most exciting adventure stories.

What makes Guantánamo and its equivalents around the world distinct from other prisons? ‘Compressed: Guantánamos’ presents Guantánamo as a starting point to reflect on states of exception and the ambiguities when the rule of law is suspended.
The ‘Guantánamo Public Memory Project’ and ‘Open Memory’
The ‘Guantánamo Public Memory Project’ displays the interactive effort of students from 11 different universities in the United States who examined both historical and contemporary aspects of Guantánamo. 13 core topics are investigated and presented for discussion. ‘Open Memory’ contains books on subjects perceived as taboo in the life of cities. With books on the themes of history, memory and space from New York, Rio de Janeiro, Mumbai, Beijing and Istanbul, the collection surfaces narratives usually excluded from conventional discourses.
‘Closed Book’
The exhibition is also accompanied by a publication: ‘Closed Book’ which presents a general overview of Turkey’s prisons. A draft copy of ‘Closed Book’ will be on display at Studio-X throughout the exhibition. You are invited to the ‘Closed Book’ corner to explore the kinds of questions Guantánamo seems to be asking of ourselves.

Being of mixed race, my identity – how I perceive myself and how others perceive me – often relies on my physical appearance. Through the second half of my teens, and now entering my 20s, I am recognizing how my hair contributes to my mixed race identity.
The decision to stop relaxing my hair was made during the second half of my freshman year of college. As a college student with little time and money to continue to chemically straighten my hair, and recognizing the harmful effects it had on my hair and scalp, I decided that I would focus on growing it out and taking better care of it. The year and a half since my last relaxer has been a learning experience, learning how to stop being self conscious of my “bushy” hair, as well as learning how to properly care for my non-chemically treated hair. Growing my natural hair has forced me to be creative my appearance, try new styles, and accept my hair for what it is.
My hair made me recognize the various mixtures of race and ethnicity that I have been blessed with. My hair combines my entire heritage from across the globe. The various shades of brown that are in my hair, with strands of blonde and red (“ehu” in Hawaiian), reflects my family and strengthen my identity within myself. Wearing my hair curly makes me feel proud to be myself – my Black, Latina, Hawaiian and Filipino – self.

3) I chose to turn the original colour picture, to black and white. I wanted to add a white text to it because I believed it complemented the white in her hair. The star adds colour, and draws peoples eyes to it first.

THE APOGEE OF ROADSTER PRODUCTION
When Mercedes-Benz introduced the 300 SL Roadster in 1957, the new model addressed many of the perceived shortcomings of the outgoing 300 SL Gullwing. Primarily, a redesign of the Gullwing’s tube frame allowed for the use of conventional doors, which improved the ease of ingress and egress. This refinement also allowed for the implementation of standard wind-up windows, significantly improving cabin comfort.
The unforgiving high-pivot swing-axle geometry of the Gullwing coupe was discarded in favor of a low-pivot swing-axle rear suspension. This configuration utilized a coil spring mounted transversely above the differential that was linked to the axles by vertical struts, serving to minimize oversteer. The frame and suspension redesign also facilitated the installation of softer coil springs, which provided the Roadsters with a more comfortable ride quality without compromising handling. The highly developed inline-six-cylinder engine was standard-equipped with the sport camshaft that had been so effective in the racing alloy-bodied coupes, increasing horsepower by 25.
In 1961 four-wheel disc brakes became standard equipment, improving the 300 SL’s stopping capabilities, thereby bringing the model in line with concurrent mechanical advancements at Ferrari. A year later, the engines were updated with aluminum alloy blocks, helping to minimize weight. Just 210 Roadsters were reportedly factory-equipped with disc brakes and alloy engine blocks, making these cars the apogee of 300 SL development—and a rarity in the bargain.
AMONG THE FINAL: CHASSIS 003188
An accompanying copy of its factory data card illustrates that this 300 SL Roadster—the 139th of those final 210 examples—is a US-market car which was delivered new on 5 August 1963 and clad in White Gray (DB 158) over a red leather interior (1079) with black soft top and matching White-Gray hardtop. Additional specifications furnished to this order included a Becker Mexico radio, sealed-beam headlamps, whitewall tires, and instrumentation in miles with standard 3.89 ratio rear axle. Though its early ownership history is unknown, by the late 1990s the car had been imported to the Netherlands.
RETURN TO DEUTSCHLAND
In April 2005, this 300 SL was acquired by a German dealer of specialty automobiles on behalf of a noted Mercedes-Benz collector and former rally driver from Berlin. Photos on file show that sometime immediately prior to its exportation from the Netherlands, it had been recently treated to a complete restoration and finished in the period-correct color of Medium Red (516) over a black leather interior and matching soft top. This theory is further supported by the fact that its new owner immediately completed a trouble-free edition of the famous 2,000-kilometer German “Oldtimer” Rally with it.
After several years of spirited enjoyment, in early 2010 our subject lot was then consigned back to the importing dealer and, from there, acquired by the renowned marque specialists at Kienle Autotechnik in Heimerdingen for their sales inventory. Upon receipt, it was decided that the car did not fully meet the firm’s exacting standards for presentation or accuracy, and as such this 300 SL Roadster was offered for sale with the condition that it was to undergo a complete and total restoration to original specifications executed by their staff. If anything, this made the sales proposition for this very late alloy-block roadster exceedingly more desirable to potential buyers, and the car was quickly snatched up by a repeat Kienle client from Oestrich-Winkel, Germany.
WITH LOVE FROM KIENLE
Images and nearly €430,000 (~$475,000) of work orders on file from Klaus Kienle thoroughly document the following six years of its transformative restoration to the stunning concours state in which it remains today. Beginning with a complete disassembly of the 300 SL’s famous tubular construction and steel body, absolutely no cosmetic or mechanical detail escaped redress during this endeavor. While the structural condition of the chassis was verified and its shapely body corrected to a sufficient degree, every mechanical component, underpinning, and assembly was exhaustively rebuilt with OEM parts or replaced as needed.
Inspection of the car’s major drivetrain components reveals its alloy-block engine and 3.89 rear axle are numbers-matching units compared to those listed on the its factory data card. Its four-speed synchromesh gearbox, stamped with number 003511, was apparently installed at a later date, but is of the correct type. The only noteworthy stylistic changes to this 300 SL’s original form appear to be a tan soft top, and 3.89 metric speedometer.
Additional equipment specified by the client included Kienle’s bespoke fuel injection pump system, engine modifications for the use of modern unleaded fuel, floor mats, and a rear trunk clothed in red leather with two pieces of matching luggage. A light smattering of more modern conveniences such as a battery kill switch, improved firewall insulation, hazard lights, 12-volt socket, and an improved diaphragm spring for the clutch were also furnished at the previous owner’s request.
Now presented today in its original color combination of White Gray (DB 158) over red leather with a matching hard top, this 300 SL Roadster is absolutely stunning. The consignor reports that between his ownership and previous, the car has traveled fewer than 300 kilometers (~185 miles) since completion of its restoration.
Among the most desirable modern Mercedes-Benzes is the Roadster, and many consider that the one to have is an alloy-block, disc-brake car. Having been completely restored by the “German pope” of world-class 300 SL specialists, this particular chassis would be a fine acquisition for any enthusiast looking to experience the sensory pleasure that the comes with driving this famous model on the open road.

Had a blast with our auto-enthusiast friend and neighbor, Fred, at Monterey Car Week 2022.
Then what can we say about mind or reality? Since there is no one to perceive a mind or reality, the notion of existence in terms of "things" and "form" is delusory; there is no reality, no perceiver of reality, and no thoughts derived from perception of reality. Once we have taken away this preconception of the existence of mind and reality, then situations emerge clearly, as they are. There is no one to watch, no one to know anything. Reality just is, and this is what is meant by the term "shunyata". Through this insight the watcher which separates us from the world is removed.
How then does belief in an "I" and the whole neurotic process begin? Roughly, according to the Madhyamikas, whenever a perception of form occurs, there is an immediate reaction of fascination and uncertainty on the part of an implied perceiver of the form. This reaction is almost instantaneous. It takes only a fraction of a fraction of a second. And as soon as we have established recognition of what the thing is, our next response is to give it a name. With the name of course comes concept. We tend to conceptualize the object, which means that at this point we are no longer able to perceive things as they actually are. We have created a kind of padding, a filter or veil between ourselves and the object. This is what prevents the maintenance of continual awareness both during and after meditation practice. This veil removes us from panoramic awareness and the presence of the meditative state, because again and again we are unable to see things as they are. We feel compelled to name, to translate, to think discursively, and this activity takes us further away from direct and accurate perception. So shunyata is not merely awareness of what we are and how we are in relation to such and such an object, but rather it is clarity which transcends conceptual padding and unnecessary confusions. One is no longer fascinated by the object nor involved as a subject. It is freedom from this and that. What remains is open space, the absence of the this-and-that dichotomy. This is what is meant by the Middle Way or Madyamika.
The experience of shunyata cannot be developed without first having worked through the narrow path of discipline and technique. Technique is necessary to start with, but it is also necessary at some stage for the technique to fall away. From the ultimate point of view the whole process of learning and practice is quite unnecessary. We could perceive the absence of ego at a single glance. But we would not accept such a simple truth. In other words, we have to learn in order to unlearn. The whole process is that of undoing the ego. We start by learning to deal with neurotic thoughts and emotions. Then false concepts are removed through understanding of emptiness, of openness. This is the experience of shunyata. Shunyata in Sanskrit means literally "void" or "emptinness", that is to say, "space", the absence of all conceptualized attitudes.
Q: How does desire lead to birth?
A: Each time there is a desire there is another birth. You plant wantingness, wanting to do something, wanting to grasp something. Then that desire to grasp also invites something further. Birth here means the birth of further confusion, further dissatisfaction, further wanting. For example, if you have a great desire for money and you manage to get a lot of it, then you also want to buy something with that money. One thing leads to the next, a chain reaction, so that desire becomes a kind of network. You want something, continually.
The experience of shunyata, seeing preciselly and clearly what is, somehow cuts through this network, this spider's web, because the spider's web is woven in the space of desire, the space of wanting. And when the space of shunyata replaces it, so to speak, the whole conceptualized formulation of desire is completely eliminated, as though you had arrived on another planet with different air, or a place without oxygen at all. So shunyata provides a new atmosphere, a new environment, which will not support clinging or grasping. Therefore the experience of shunyata also makes impossible the planting of the seed of karma, which is why it is said that shunyata is that which gives birth to all the buddhas, all the awakened ones. "Awakened" means not being involved in the chain reactions and complications of the karmic process.
Q: Why is it that so many of us have such a strong tendency to not see things as they really are?
A: I think largely because we are afraid that we will see it.
Q: Why are we afraid of seeing it?
A: We want an umbilical cord attached to the ego through which we can feed all the time.
Q: Can this understanding of "emptiness is form" be attained through the practice of meditation techniques or must it come to us spontaneously?
A: The perception of shunyata is not achieved through the practice of mental gymnastics; It is a matter of actually SEEING it. It could be perceived in sitting meditation or it could be seen in life situations. There is no set pattern to producing it. In the case of Naropa, the great Indian yogi, he perceived shunyata when his master took off his sandal and slapped him on the cheek. That very moment he saw it. It depends upon individual situation.
Q: Then it is not something you go looking for?
A: If one is really keen, really devoted to finding it, completely devoted to understanding it, then one has to give up looking for it.
Q: I have some difficulty reconciling the concept of shunyata with what is going on right now.
A: When you have a shunyata experience, it does not mean that you cease to perceive, cease to live on Earth. You still live on the Earth, but you see more precisely what is here. We believe that we know things as they are. But we only see our version which is not quite complete. There is much more to learn about the true subtleties of life. The things we see are a very crude version of what is. Having an experience of shunyata does not mean that the whole world completely dissolves into space, but that you begin to notice the space so that the world is somewhat less crowded. For example, if we are going to communicate to someone, we might prepare ourselves to say such and such to calm him down or explain things to him. But then he comes out with so many complications of his own, he churns out so much himself, that before you know where you are, you are completely confused by him. You share his confusion rather than having the clarity you prepared at the beginning. You have been completely absorbed into his confusion. So shunyata means seeing through confusion. You keep precision and clarity all the time.
Q: How is one to begin to see what is?
A: By not beginning, by giving up the idea of a beginning. If you try to affirm a particular territory -- my experience -- then you are not going to see shunyata. You have to give up the idea of territory altogether. Which can be done, it is not impossible. It is not just philosophical speculation. One can give up the idea of territory, one can not begin.
Q: Is it part of not beginning to try for so long that one gives up from exhaustion? Can one give up before one has tried? Is there any shortcut?
A: Sudden enlightenment comes only with exhaustion. Its suddenness does not necessarily mean that there is a shortcut. In some cases, people might experience a sudden flash of enlightenment, but if they do not work their way through, their habitual thought patterns will resume and their minds will become overcrowded again. One must make the journey because, as you said, at the point where you begin to be disappointed you get it.
Q: This seems to lead back to the Hinayana path of discipline. Is that correct?
A: Yes, meditation is hard work, manual work, so to speak.
Q: Having begun, it seems that there is something to do.
A: There is something to do, but at the same time whatever you are doing is only related to the moment rather than being related to achieving some goal in the future, which brings us back to the practice of meditation. Meditation is not a matter of beginning to set foot on the path; it is realizing that you are already on the path -- fully being in the nowness of this very moment -- now, now, now. You do not actually begin because you have never really left the path.
Q: You described enlightened people as being free from the karmic chain. I would like to know what you meant by that, because it seems to me that they create a new karmic chain.
A: The word "karma" means "creation" or "action" -- chain reaction. For example, by looking toward the future we plant the seed in the present. In the case of enlightened people, they do not plan for the future because they have no desire to provide security for themselves. They do not need to know the pattern of the future anymore. They have conquered the preconception of "future". They are fully in the now. The now has the potential of the future in it, as well as that of the past. Enlightened people have completely mastered the restless and paranoid activities of mind. They are completely, fully in the moment; therefore they are free from sowing further seeds of karma. When the future comes they do not see it as a result of their good deeds in the past; they see it as present all the time. So they do not create any further chain reactions.
Q: Is the "awake quality" different from just being in the now?
A: Yes. Enlightenment is being awake in the nowness. For instance, animals live in the present and, for that matter, an infant child lives in the present; but that is quite different from being awake or enlightened.
Q: I do not quite understand what you mean by animals and babies living in the present. What is the difference between living in the present in that form and being an enlightened person?
A: I think it is a question of the difference between dwelling upon something and really being in the nowness in terms of "awake". In the case of an infant or animal, it is being in the nowness but it is dwelling upon the nowness. They get some kind of feedback from it by dwelling upon it, although they may not notice it consciously. In the case of an enlightened being, he is not dwelling upon the idea -- "I am an enlightened being" -- because he has completely transcended the idea of "I am". He is just fully being. The subject-object division has been completely transcended.
Q: If the enlightened being is without ego and feels the sorrows and the sadness of those around him but does not feel his own necessarily, then would you call his willingness to help them get over their difficulties "desire"?
A: I don't think so. Desire comes in when you want to see someone happy. When that person is happy, then you feel happy because the activities you have engaged in to make him happy are, in a sense, done for yourself rather than for the other person. You would like to see him happy. An enlightened being has no such attitude. Whenever someone requires his help, he just gives it; there is no self-gratification or self- congratulation involved.
Q: Why did you name your center here Karma Dzong?
A: Karma means "action" as well as "Buddha activity", and Dzong is the Tibetan word for "fortress". Situations just present themselves rather than being deliberately premeditated. They are perpetually developing, happening quite spontaneously. Also there seems to be a tremendous amount of energy at the center, which also could be said of karma. It is energy which is not misled by anyone, energy which is in the fortress. What is happening definitely had to happen. It takes the shape of spontaneous karmic relationships rather than of missionary work or the conversion of people into Buddhists.
Q: How would you relate samadhi and nirvana to the concept of shunyata?
A: There is a problem here with words. It is not a matter of differences; it is a matter of different emphases. Samadhi is complete involvement and nirvana is freedom and both are connected with shunyata. When we experience shunyata, we are completely involved, without the subject-object division of duality. We are also free from confusion.

It eggs on participants to share connections. Four members of the public per rotation wear glowing Sperm helmets and count while a large Egg rolls to a hiding location. When Sperm find the Egg and lays hands on it, the Egg glows more intensely. Once fully illuminated, the Egg is ushered back to the start point and the game begins again.
Playing with contact, this game electrifies connections between spectators, objects, and participants by offering a fun way to contemplate our motivations. Egg & Sperm uses technology to bring people closer together, physically as well as metaphorically. By exaggerating technology’s role at the center of the human quest for love, this work plays on sex and sexuality’s electrifying components. In emphasizing the body’s physicality, the artist hopes to inspire participating individuals into unplanned acts of contact.

At the Jay Estate in Rye, we try to make history, which is often perceived as old and dusty, something fresh and relevant. To do this we rely heavily on our partnerships with area schools, other non-profits and corporate grantors like Rye's own Con Edison, all of whom have the vision to think outside the box and outside the classroom. Together, we've created new hands-on opportunities to train the "Founders" of tomorrow and promote civic engagement in a multitude of fields.
Well you can't get much more hands-on than archaeology which is a critical component of environmental review at any landmark site, including our own. So this past month, six Rye Country Day High School volunteers really lived their school's motto of "Not for Self but For Service" and put themselves through a rigorous dirt-under-your-fingernails field experience! Not only did they help uncover and identify cultural resources for JHC but they also helped create a template for mini-archaeology camps that will be offered to younger kids in Westchester later this summer.
In their report to their advisor they explained, "For our senior term project, we elected to help with an archaeological dig at the Jay Heritage Center, assisting Dr. Eugene Boesch in searching for artifacts that might reveal more about John Jay's 1745 colonial farmhouse - the home where he grew up as a child in Rye. Following criteria set by the Department of the Interior, we dug, screened, measured and catalogued 18th century square nails and iridescent glass, an assortment of glazed pottery and creamware, a clay tobacco pipe bowl marked TD and a pipe stem, and pieces of animal bones. But our most exciting find was probably a prehistoric tool or scraper revealing the presence of earlier First Nations encampments on the site. We learned that archaeology is a necessary part of environmental review since our cultural resources are fragile and not renewable. "
While most adults might stereotype kids this age as being glued to the screens on their I-phones, these girls worked diligently and thoughtfully mastering large wooden screens to sift shovelfuls of earth for artifacts. The prize? Holding a prehistoric stone blade in their hands, one they dug up themselves after 3 patient, buggy days in the hot sun. As one girl admitted, it had that "Wow, Indiana Jones" excitement to it but it also made them appreciate that other people "breathed" here.
At the end of the week, the girls cleaned, labeled and photographed their finds. Several asked if they could come back as counselors for the mini-archaeology camp, hoping to witness the same excitement on the faces of a dozen 10 year old summer campers when they make their own awesome discoveries.
It is close partnerships with area schools and corporate grantors like Con Edison that make programs of civic engagement like this possible. Students leave our site with visual and tactile impressions more indelible than looking at any image in a textbook or Smart board. As a result, they are the ones digging even deeper for greater, more visible returns on their hard work when they come back to volunteer again.

Meet the Dreamer, my new interactive art project, which I have just started to prototype. This illuminated sculpture aims to make us more aware of the characters who live inside our heads, and how our emotions influence the way we perceive the world around us.
The Dreamer’s head lights up with rear-projected videos of some of the characters who influence us, along with memories and feelings that fill in our minds, day and night. To show what the Dreamer is thinking, our first prototypes display images of people and nature, sparking different moods, each represented by a different colored light, such as: red for anger, orange for fear, yellow for happiness, green for surprise, blue for sadness, purple for love, for example.
You will be able to change the Dreamer’s worldview by pressing buttons that make him/her more happy or sad, angry or kind, fearful or curious (like social media emoticons). In response, the Dreamer’s head will light up with different colors and facial expressions, as these emotions are activated in his/her mind.
This kinetic sculpture can give us a glimpse at what goes on inside our heads, as images of our lives pass by, fleeting like clouds in the sky, colored by our moods. The Dreamer’s quiet face keeps transforming, responding to new images and emotions with images and sounds of its own.
As times goes by, we see the interplay of the forces that drive us: anger can turn into love, sadness into joy, fear into curiosity. And changing our emotions can transform how we view the world. We hope this experience can help us replace our destructive emotions with a more positive outlook.
The Dreamer is being developed at Tam Makers, our makerspace in Mill Valley, where we are building our first prototypes. This interactive art project will be presented in different ways:
• as part of the Time Machine we’re building at Pataphysical Studios
• as a stand-alone exhibit in art shows and galleries
• in large street performances during public events
• in short videos on the web
We’re still experimenting with different ways to create The Dreamer. The current plan is to vacuum form a mannequin head (for the prototype), then a clay sculpture of the preferred shape (for the final product), using translucent white plastic, flattened a bit at the mouth, eyes and forehead, so that we can rear-project a variety of faces onto the heads from inside.

Hong Kong (香港; "Fragrant Harbour"), officially Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the southern coast of China at the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea. Hong Kong is known for its skyline and deep natural harbour. It has an area of 1104 km2 and shares its northern border with the Guangdong Province of Mainland China. With around 7.2 million Hongkongers of various nationalities, Hong Kong is one of the world's most densely populated metropolises.
After the First Opium War (1839–42), Hong Kong became a British colony with the perpetual cession of Hong Kong Island, followed by Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and a 99-year lease of the New Territories from 1898. Hong Kong remained under British control for about a century until the Second World War, when Japan occupied the colony from December 1941 to August 1945. After the Surrender of Japan, the British resumed control. In the 1980s, negotiations between the United Kingdom and the People's Republic of China resulted in the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, which provided for the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong on 30 June 1997. The territory became a special administrative region of China with a high degree of autonomy on 1 July 1997 under the principle of one country, two systems. Disputes over the perceived misapplication of this principle have contributed to popular protests, including the 2014 Umbrella Revolution.
In the late 1970s, Hong Kong became a major entrepôt in Asia-Pacific. The territory has developed into a major global trade hub and financial centre. The 44th-largest economy in the world, Hong Kong ranks top 10 in GDP (PPP) per capita, but also has the most severe income inequality among advanced economies. Hong Kong is one of the three most important financial centres alongside New York and London, and the world's number one tourist destination city. The territory has been named the freest market economy. The service economy, characterised by free trade and low taxation, has been regarded as one of the world's most laissez-faire economic policies, and the currency, the Hong Kong dollar, is the 13th most traded currency in the world.
The Hong Kong Basic Law empowers the region to develop relations and make agreements directly with foreign states and regions, as well as international organizations, in a broad range of appropriate fields. It is an independent member of APEC, the IMF, WTO, FIFA and International Olympic Committee among others.
Limited land created a dense infrastructure and the territory became a centre of modern architecture, and one of the world's most vertical cities. Hong Kong has a highly developed public transportation network covering 90 per cent of the population, the highest in the world, and relies on mass transit by road or rail. Air pollution remains a serious problem. Loose emissions standards have resulted in a high level of atmospheric particulates. Nevertheless, Hongkongers enjoy the world's longest or second longest life expectancies.
NAME
It is not known who was responsible for the Romanisation of the name "Hong Kong" but it is generally believed to be an early imprecise phonetic rendering of the pronunciation of the spoken Cantonese or Hakka name 香港, meaning "Fragrant Harbour". Before 1842, the name referred to a small inlet—now Aberdeen Harbour (香港仔, Sidney Lau: heung1gong2 jai2, Jyutping: hoeng1gong2 zai2, or Hiong1gong3 zai3 in a form of Hakka, literally means "Little Hong Kong")—between Aberdeen Island and the south side of Hong Kong Island, which was one of the first points of contact between British sailors and local fishermen. As those early contacts are likely to have been with Hong Kong's early inhabitants, the Tankas (水上人), it is equally probable that the early Romanisation was a faithful execution of their speech, i.e. hong1, not heung1. Detailed and accurate Romanisation systems for Cantonese were available and in use at the time.
The reference to fragrance may refer to the sweet taste of the harbour's fresh water estuarine influx of the Pearl River, or to the incense from factories, lining the coast to the north of Kowloon, which was stored near Aberdeen Harbour for export before the development of the Victoria Harbour.
In 1842, the Treaty of Nanking was signed and the name, Hong Kong, was first recorded on official documents to encompass the entirety of the island.
The name had often been written as the single word Hongkong until the government adopted the current form in 1926. Nevertheless, a number of century-old institutions still retain the single-word form, such as the Hongkong Post, Hongkong Electric and the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation.
The full official name, after 1997, is "Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China". This is the official title as mentioned in the Hong Kong Basic Law and the Hong Kong Government's website; however, "Hong Kong Special Administrative Region" and "Hong Kong" are widely accepted.
Hong Kong has carried many nicknames: the most famous among those is the "Pearl of the Orient", which reflected the impressive night-view of the city's light decorations on the skyscrapers along both sides of the Victoria Harbour. The territory is also known as "Asia's World City".
HISTORY
PRE-BRITISH
Archaeological studies support human presence in the Chek Lap Kok area (now Hong Kong International Airport) from 35,000 to 39,000 years ago and on Sai Kung Peninsula from 6,000 years ago.
Wong Tei Tung and Three Fathoms Cove are the earliest sites of human habitation in Hong Kong during the Paleolithic Period. It is believed that the Three Fathom Cove was a river-valley settlement and Wong Tei Tung was a lithic manufacturing site. Excavated Neolithic artefacts suggested cultural differences from the Longshan culture of northern China and settlement by the Che people, prior to the migration of the Baiyue (Viets) to Hong Kong. Eight petroglyphs, which dated to the Shang dynasty in China, were discovered on the surrounding islands.
ANCIENT CHINA
In 214 BC, Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China, conquered the Baiyue tribes in Jiaozhi (modern Liangguang region and Vietnam) and incorporated the territory into imperial China for the first time. Modern Hong Kong was assigned to the Nanhai commandery (modern Nanhai District), near the commandery's capital city Panyu. In Qin dynasty, the territory was ruled by Panyu County(番禺縣) up till Jin Dynasty.
The area of Hong Kong was consolidated under the kingdom of Nanyue (Southern Viet), founded by general Zhao Tuo in 204 BC after the collapse of the short-lived Qin dynasty. When the kingdom of Nanyue was conquered by the Han Dynasty in 111 BC, Hong Kong was assigned to the Jiaozhi commandery. Archaeological evidence indicates that the population increased and early salt production flourished in this time period. Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb on the Kowloon Peninsula is believed to have been built during the Han dynasty.
IMPERIAL CHINA
Started from Jin dynasty to early period of Tang dynasty, the territory that now comprises Hong Kong was governed by Bao'an County (寶安縣). In Tang dynasty, the Guangdong region flourished as an international trading center. The Tuen Mun region in what is now Hong Kong's New Territories served as a port, naval base, salt production centre and later, base for the exploitation of pearls. Lantau Island was also a salt production centre, where the salt smugglers riots broke out against the government.
Under the Tang dynasty, the Guangdong (Canton) region flourished as a regional trading centre. In 736 AD, the first Emperor of Tang established a military stronghold in Tuen Mun in western Hong Kong to defend the coastal area of the region. The first village school, Li Ying College, was established around 1075 AD in the modern-day New Territories under the Northern Song dynasty. After their defeat by the Mongols, the Southern Song court briefly moved to modern-day Kowloon City (the Sung Wong Toi site), before its final defeat at the Battle of Yamen.
From the mid-Tang dynasty to early Ming dynasty, the territory that now comprises Hong Kong was governed by Dongguan County (東莞縣/ 東官縣). In Ming dynasty, the area was governed by Xin'an County (新安縣) before it was colonized by the British government. The indigenous inhabitants of what is now Hong Kong are identified with several ethnicities, including Punti, Hakka, Tanka) and Hoklo.
The earliest European visitor on record was Jorge Álvares, a Portuguese explorer who arrived in 1513. Having founded an establishment in Macau by 1557, Portuguese merchants began trading in southern China. However, subsequent military clashes between China and Portugal led to the expulsion of all Portuguese merchants from the rest of China.
In the mid-16th century, the Haijin order (closed-door, isolation policy) was enforced and it strictly forbade all maritime activities in order to prevent contact from foreigners by sea. From 1661 to 1669, Hong Kong was directly affected by the Great Clearance of the Kangxi Emperor, who required the evacuation of coastal areas of Guangdong. About 16,000 people from Hong Kong and Bao'an County were forced to emigrate inland; 1,648 of those who evacuated were said to have returned after the evacuation was rescinded in 1669.
BRITSH CROWN COLONY 1842–1941
In 1839, the refusal of Qing authorities to support opium imports caused the outbreak of the First Opium War between the British Empire and the Qing Empire. Qing's defeat resulted in the occupation of Hong Kong Island by British forces on 20 January 1841. It was initially ceded under the Convention of Chuenpee, as part of a ceasefire agreement between Captain Charles Elliot and Governor Qishan. While a dispute between high-ranking officials of both countries led to the failure of the treaty's ratification, on 29 August 1842, Hong Kong Island was formally ceded in perpetuity to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland under the Treaty of Nanking. The British officially established a Crown colony and founded the City of Victoria in the following year.
The population of Hong Kong Island was 7,450 when the Union Flag raised over Possession Point on 26 January 1841. It mostly consisted of Tanka fishermen and Hakka charcoal burners, whose settlements scattered along several coastal hamlets. In the 1850s, a large number of Chinese immigrants crossed the then-free border to escape from the Taiping Rebellion. Other natural disasters, such as flooding, typhoons and famine in mainland China would play a role in establishing Hong Kong as a place for safe shelter.
Further conflicts over the opium trade between Britain and Qing quickly escalated into the Second Opium War. Following the Anglo-French victory, the Crown Colony was expanded to include Kowloon Peninsula (south of Boundary Street) and Stonecutter's Island, both of which were ceded to the British in perpetuity under the Convention of Beijing in 1860.
In 1898, Britain obtained a 99-year lease from Qing under the Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory, in which Hong Kong obtained a 99-year lease of the Lantau Island, the area north of Boundary Street in Kowloon up to Shenzhen River and over 200 other outlying islands.
Hong Kong soon became a major entrepôt thanks to its free port status, attracting new immigrants to settle from both China and Europe alike. The society, however, remained racially segregated and polarised under British colonial policies. Despite the rise of a British-educated Chinese upper-class by the late-19th century, race laws such as the Peak Reservation Ordinance prevented ethnic Chinese in Hong Kong from acquiring houses in reserved areas, such as the Victoria Peak. At this time, the majority of the Chinese population in Hong Kong had no political representation in the British colonial government. There were, however, a small number of Chinese elites whom the British governors relied on, such as Sir Kai Ho and Robert Hotung, who served as communicators and mediators between the government and local population.
Hong Kong continued to experience modest growth during the first half of the 20th century. The University of Hong Kong was established in 1911 as the territory's oldest higher education institute. While there was an exodus of 60,000 residents for fear of a German attack on the British colony during the First World War, Hong Kong remained peaceful. Its population increased from 530,000 in 1916 to 725,000 in 1925 and reached 1.6 million by 1941.
In 1925, Cecil Clementi became the 17th Governor of Hong Kong. Fluent in Cantonese and without a need for translator, Clementi introduced the first ethnic Chinese, Shouson Chow, into the Executive Council as an unofficial member. Under his tenure, Kai Tak Airport entered operation as RAF Kai Tak and several aviation clubs. In 1937, the Second Sino-Japanese War broke out when the Japanese Empire expanded its territories from northeastern China into the mainland proper. To safeguard Hong Kong as a freeport, Governor Geoffry Northcote declared the Crown Colony as a neutral zone.
JAPANESE OCCUPATION 1941–45
As part of its military campaign in Southeast Asia during Second World War, the Japanese army moved south from Guangzhou of mainland China and attacked Hong Kong on 8 December 1941. The Battle of Hong Kong ended with the British and Canadian defenders surrendering control of Hong Kong to Japan on 25 December 1941 in what was regarded by locals as Black Christmas.
During the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, the Japanese army committed atrocities against civilians and POWs, such as the St. Stephen's College massacre. Local residents also suffered widespread food shortages, limited rationing and hyper-inflation arising from the forced exchange of currency from Hong Kong Dollars to Japanese military banknotes. The initial ratio of 2:1 was gradually devalued to 4:1 and ownership of Hong Kong Dollars was declared illegal and punishable by harsh torture. Due to starvation and forced deportation for slave labour to mainland China, the population of Hong Kong had dwindled from 1.6 million in 1941 to 600,000 in 1945, when Britain resumed control of the colony on 30 August 1945.
ECONOMY
As one of the world's leading international financial centres, Hong Kong has a major capitalist service economy characterised by low taxation and free trade. The currency, Hong Kong dollar, is the eighth most traded currency in the world as of 2010. Hong Kong was once described by Milton Friedman as the world's greatest experiment in laissez-faire capitalism, but has since instituted a regime of regulations including a minimum wage. It maintains a highly developed capitalist economy, ranked the freest in the world by the Index of Economic Freedom every year since 1995. It is an important centre for international finance and trade, with one of the greatest concentrations of corporate headquarters in the Asia-Pacific region, and is known as one of the Four Asian Tigers for its high growth rates and rapid development from the 1960s to the 1990s. Between 1961 and 1997 Hong Kong's gross domestic product grew 180 times while per-capita GDP increased 87 times over.
The Hong Kong Stock Exchange is the seventh largest in the world and has a market capitalisation of US$2.3 trillion as of December 2009. In that year, Hong Kong raised 22 percent of worldwide initial public offering (IPO) capital, making it the largest centre of IPOs in the world and the easiest place to raise capital. The Hong Kong dollar has been pegged to the US dollar since 1983.
The Hong Kong Government has traditionally played a mostly passive role in the economy, with little by way of industrial policy and almost no import or export controls. Market forces and the private sector were allowed to determine practical development. Under the official policy of "positive non-interventionism", Hong Kong is often cited as an example of laissez-faire capitalism. Following the Second World War, Hong Kong industrialised rapidly as a manufacturing centre driven by exports, and then underwent a rapid transition to a service-based economy in the 1980s. Since then, it has grown to become a leading centre for management, financial, IT, business consultation and professional services.
Hong Kong matured to become a financial centre in the 1990s, but was greatly affected by the Asian financial crisis in 1998, and again in 2003 by the SARS outbreak. A revival of external and domestic demand has led to a strong recovery, as cost decreases strengthened the competitiveness of Hong Kong exports and a long deflationary period ended. Government intervention, initiated by the later colonial governments and continued since 1997, has steadily increased, with the introduction of export credit guarantees, a compulsory pension scheme, a minimum wage, anti-discrimination laws, and a state mortgage backer.
The territory has little arable land and few natural resources, so it imports most of its food and raw materials. Imports account for more than 90% of Hong Kong's food supply, including nearly all of the meat and rice available there. Agricultural activity - relatively unimportant to Hong Kong's economy and contributing just 0.1% of its GDP - primarily consists of growing premium food and flower varieties. Hong Kong is the world's eleventh largest trading entity, with the total value of imports and exports exceeding its gross domestic product. It is the world's largest re-export centre. Much of Hong Kong's exports consist of re-exports, which are products made outside of the territory, especially in mainland China, and distributed via Hong Kong. Its physical location has allowed the city to establish a transportation and logistics infrastructure that includes the world's second busiest container port and the world's busiest airport for international cargo. Even before the transfer of sovereignty, Hong Kong had established extensive trade and investment ties with the mainland, which now enable it to serve as a point of entry for investment flowing into the mainland. At the end of 2007, there were 3.46 million people employed full-time, with the unemployment rate averaging 4.1% for the fourth straight year of decline. Hong Kong's economy is dominated by the service sector, which accounts for over 90% of its GDP, while industry constitutes 9%. Inflation was at 2.5% in 2007. Hong Kong's largest export markets are mainland China, the United States, and Japan.
As of 2010 Hong Kong is the eighth most expensive city for expatriates, falling from fifth position in the previous year. Hong Kong is ranked fourth in terms of the highest percentage of millionaire households, behind Switzerland, Qatar, and Singapore with 8.5 percent of all households owning at least one million US dollars. Hong Kong is also ranked second in the world by the most billionaires per capita (one per 132,075 people), behind Monaco. In 2011, Hong Kong was ranked second in the Ease of Doing Business Index, behind Singapore.

In 2014, Hong Kong was the eleventh most popular destination for international tourists among countries and territories worldwide, with a total of 27.8 million visitors contributing a total of US$38,376 million in international tourism receipts. Hong Kong is also the most popular city for tourists, nearly two times of its nearest competitor Macau.
DEMOGRAPHICS
The territory's population in mid-2015 is 7.30 million, with an average annual growth rate of 0.8% over the previous 5 years. The current population of Hong Kong comprises 91% ethnic Chinese. A major part of Hong Kong's Cantonese-speaking majority originated from the neighbouring Guangdong province, from where many fled during the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Chinese Civil War, and the communist rule in China.
Residents of the Mainland do not automatically receive the Right of Abode, and many may not enter the territory freely. Like other non-natives, they may apply for the Right of Abode after seven years of continuous residency. Some of the rights may also be acquired by marriage (e.g., the right to work), but these do not include the right to vote or stand for office. However, the influx of immigrants from mainland China, approximating 45,000 per year, is a significant contributor to its population growth – a daily quota of 150 Mainland Chinese with family ties in Hong Kong are granted a "one way permit". Life expectancy in Hong Kong is 81.2 years for males and 86.9 years for females as of 2014, making it the highest life expectancy in the world.
About 91% of the people of Hong Kong are of Chinese descent, the majority of whom are Taishanese, Chiu Chow, other Cantonese people, and Hakka. Hong Kong's Han majority originate mainly from the Guangzhou and Taishan regions in Guangdong province. The remaining 6.9% of the population is composed of non-ethnic Chinese. There is a South Asian population of Indians, Pakistanis and Nepalese; some Vietnamese refugees have become permanent residents of Hong Kong. There are also Britons, Americans, Canadians, Japanese, and Koreans working in the city's commercial and financial sector. In 2011, 133,377 foreign domestic helpers from Indonesia and 132,935 from the Philippines were working in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong's de facto official language is Cantonese, a variety of Chinese originating from Guangdong province to the north of Hong Kong. English is also an official language, and according to a 1996 by-census is spoken by 3.1 percent of the population as an everyday language and by 34.9 percent of the population as a second language. Signs displaying both Chinese and English are common throughout the territory. Since the 1997 Handover, an increase in immigrants from communist China and greater interaction with the mainland's economy have brought an increasing number of Mandarin speakers to Hong Kong.
RELIGION
A majority of residents of Hong Kong have no religious affiliation, professing a form of agnosticism or atheism. According to the US Department of State 43 percent of the population practices some form of religion. Some figures put it higher, according to a Gallup poll, 64% of Hong Kong residents do not believe in any religion, and possibly 80% of Hong Kong claim no religion. In Hong Kong teaching evolution won out in curriculum dispute about whether to teach other explanations, and that creationism and intelligent design will form no part of the senior secondary biology curriculum.
Hong Kong enjoys a high degree of religious freedom, guaranteed by the Basic Law. Hong Kong's main religions are Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism; a local religious scholar in contact with major denominations estimates there are approximately 1.5 million Buddhists and Taoists. A Christian community of around 833,000 forms about 11.7% of the total population; Protestants forms a larger number than Roman Catholics at a rate of 4:3, although smaller Christian communities exist, including the Latter-day Saints and Jehovah's Witnesses. The Anglican and Roman Catholic churches each freely appoint their own bishops, unlike in mainland China. There are also Sikh, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu and Bahá'í communities. The practice of Falun Gong is tolerated.

Statistically Hong Kong's income gap is the greatest in Asia Pacific. According to a report by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme in 2008, Hong Kong's Gini coefficient, at 0.53, was the highest in Asia and "relatively high by international standards". However, the government has stressed that income disparity does not equate to worsening of the poverty situation, and that the Gini coefficient is not strictly comparable between regions. The government has named economic restructuring, changes in household sizes, and the increase of high-income jobs as factors that have skewed the Gini coefficient.

The monument was commissioned as part of a redesigned street layout in 1999. O'Connell Street was perceived to have gone into decline from the 1970s. Some people blamed the appearance of fast food restaurants and the opening of bargain basement shops-all using cheap plastic shop fronts-visually unattractive and obtrusive, the existence of a number of derelict sites, and the 1966 destruction of Nelson's Pillar in a bombing by former IRA members, as reasons for the decline in a once famous and attractive street.
In the 1990s, plans were launched to improve the streetscape. The excessive number of trees in the central reservation, which had overgrown and obscured the street's views and monuments, was reduced dramatically. Statues were cleaned and in some cases relocated. Shop-owners were required to replace plastic signage and frontage with more visually attractive designs. Private car traffic was re-directed where possible away from the street, with its number of traffic lanes reduced, to allow more 'public ownership' of the street for pedestrians. The centrepiece of this regeneration was to be a replacement monument for Nelson's Pillar, the Spire of Dublin, chosen through an international competition by a committee under the then chairmanship of the Lord Mayor of Dublin Joe Doyle from a large number of submissions.

Dutch cuisine, while often perceived as simple and hearty, boasts a rich history shaped by its agricultural land, dairy farming traditions, and extensive maritime trade. Staples often include potatoes, vegetables, and meat or fish, reflecting a practical approach to cooking. Breakfast and lunch often feature bread with various toppings, from savory cheeses and cured meats to surprisingly sweet options like chocolate sprinkles (hagelslag). One of the most iconic categories of Dutch food is its diverse array of "stamppot" dishes. Sweet treats also hold a special place in Dutch culinary traditions. The stroopwafel, a thin waffle cookie with a caramel syrup filling, is perhaps the most famous and universally loved. Best enjoyed warm, often placed over a hot cup of tea or coffee to soften the syrup, it's a delightful combination of crispiness and gooey sweetness. Poffertjes, small, fluffy, yeast-leavened pancakes dusted with powdered sugar and butter, are another popular indulgence, often found at markets and festivals.
Finally, Dutch cuisine offers a unique range of dairy and fish specialties. The country is world-renowned for its cheeses like Gouda and Edam, which are enjoyed in various forms, from breakfast slices to cheese boards. Herring, particularly "Hollandse Nieuwe" (soused herring), is a raw, brined delicacy often eaten whole with chopped onions and pickles, especially in the summer.
