JAAROVERZICHT 2021

Waarschijnlijk zouden we gewoon vakantie houden in België...

After all the snow has melted so many face masks are along sidewalks. Quebec and Prince Edward Island are the only two provinces extending their mask mandates only until the end of this month. Other provinces such as Ontario have resisted to reimpose public health restrictions including mask mandates. Unfortunately we are now in the 6’th wave of the COVID-19 pandemic due to the Omicron BA-2 subvariant. Regrettably, rapid antigen testing now only works 37% and most people can’t access hospitals PCR testing that’s restricted. So, we can’t actually determine the number of active cases. However, sewer water testing in our province just reported between 100,000 and 120,000 new active cases of the virus each day, a far cry from 4,224 officially reported yesterday due to the limits of PCR testing.

Vaccination rates vary across the country, but research has shown the shots help reduce severe outcome’s especially in older (70+) individuals and people with co-morbidity. Our Health Unit recommends all over 60 get the 4’th booster. They also referenced the current severity of the new variant with the most deaths in the past 3 months compared to the last 2 years when COVID-19 started.

Fortunately me and my family have yet to catch the virus’s but the risk has surged so it might happen if I stop masking. Obviously working I have to continue wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

So I won’t dump my masks!

The original Toward Castle dates from the 15th century and was owned by the Clan Lamont until 1809. The castle was extended in the 17th century, but was abandoned after an attack by the Clan Campbell in 1646. The ruins lie around 500 metres (1,600 ft) south-east of the later Castle Toward. This later Castle Toward was built in 1820 for Kirkman Finlay (1773–1842), former Lord Provost of Glasgow, as his family's country house. Toward Castle is a scheduled monument.

The grounds of the centre were used as a filming location for the children's BBC Television series Raven, featuring the actor James Mackenzie, up to and including the seventh series at the start of 2008.

After a chequered history Argyle & Bute Council sold the castle in June 2016, for £1.51 million, to Denice Purdie and Keith Punler of Kapital Assets, who plan to develop houses, flats, a wedding venue and other businesses on the estate.

This is colony PCR (aka Polymerase Chain Reaction). What I'm doing is screening colonies of bacteria for the ones that have the gene I want inside of them. I take a toothpick, dip it in each one of these, and then in some growth medium (pretty much chicken soup).

PCR is a way of amplifying DNA. Whenever they do DNA work on TV (aka CSI) it uses this technique. The guy that invented this technique won the Nobel Prize in 1993.
