After four and a half years of bustitution, trolley service has returned to Route 15 in Philadelphia!
Newly rebuilt PCC III car 2326 is seen plying the rails at Girard Ave and Frankford Ave, having just passed under the Market-Frankford Line (known locally as the "el") and passing an unusual double stack of McDonalds signs. The car was built in 1947 by the St. Louis Car Co., and had already been rebuilt once in the early 2000's. The most recent rebuild stripped the car - and its 17 siblings - completely down to the frame, after extensive mechanical issues were discovered in 2020.

Taking pictures through the windshield that was covered with salt and mud that day was difficult.
I was scanning my way through a stack of Roger Puta slides when I came upon just four of MUNI PCC Cars dated December 1980. It's pretty clear Roger was out one winter afternoon in San Francisco playing with the setting sunlight. I know you are going to like these.
The fourth car is a double ender. But all Muni PCCs had a front pole for backup moves. Note how the front trolley pole rope, best seen in the third photo, is wrapped behind the left outside rear view mirror.

I am beginning a series of photographs of Philadelphia PCC trolley cars. "The PCC (Presidents’ Conference Committee) is a streetcar design that was first built in the United States in the 1930s. The design proved successful in its native country, and after World War II it was licensed for use elsewhere in the world where PCC based cars were made. The PCC car has proved to be a long-lasting icon of streetcar design, and many are still in service around the world." Wikipedia
"The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is a regional public transportation authority that operates bus, rapid transit, commuter rail, light rail, and electric trolleybus services for nearly 4 million people in five counties in and around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania."

New in 1949 as Twin City Rapid Transit car #325, this PCC car spent its later career in Newark NJ, latterly with NJ Transit. PCC operation in Newark lasted until August 2001, when modern light rail vehicles displaced the veterans. A total of 11 ex-NJ Transit PCCs were sold to San Francisco Muni for use on the heritage F Market service, while others went to museums. Rockhill Trolley Museum acquired #6, where it forms part of the operational fleet.
