Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras Α΄

As today, exactly 70 years ago, November 1, 1948, on the eve of the saintly autarches, miraculous Anargyrs Kosmas and Damianos, the ecumenical patriarch Athinagoras I was enthroned our fellow villager with the secular name Aristocles-Dimitrios Spyrou.

Birth: 6 April 1886Tsaraplasna (today's Vasiliko), Epirus, then Ottoman Empire

Death7 July 1972 (86 years old) Fanari, Constantinople

Former Titles:Metropolitan of Corfu (1922-1930)

Archbishop of America (1930-1948)

He said:"I have no personal joys. I have your own joys. Every day I talk to you all. I deal with each one separately. And there are millions of these forms that cover my thoughts ...I really like the dialogue. Why more of the people's speech is the mystery. To accept people in my office, I find it a blessing. I remember what the villagers said to me when I was a deacon: "We came to look." Do the philosophy of life ...Every night, I descend to the narthex of the Church, and when all of you sleep, I add another dialogue to my dialogues, with Lord Christ and Lord Panayia. For you. All of you. Here in America, Australia, Europe, ubiquitous. In my heavy responsibility, strengthen me, the great Romans, myself in all the Oikoumen ...

Zion National Park has something indefinable about its beauty. I remember when we were approaching the entrance gate of Zion and I could see the sandstone peaks approaching in the distance, somehow it brought tears to my eyes. But there was one spot within Zion in particular, where we came out of the woods after a long hike, and looking back unexpectedly saw a view, part of which is captured in this photo. It's only a section of the view, the whole area is surrounded by peaks like that, and is called "Court of the Patriarchs". The mountains tower straight up like skyscrapers, and the only way to photograph them is with an ultrawide lens. It was the middle of the day and the light was a bit flat overhead, but I worked with what I had.

Trying to define exactly what it was that hit us at that point is like trying to explain what it is like to be in love, or to experience a feeling of awe, but I will try. I would describe it as a feeling of reverence, for experiencing the overwhelming and ancient beauty of this place, and how insignificant we feel in comparison. And also gratitude, knowing we are so fortunate to stand on this piece of sacred ground, feeling the sun on our skin and the soft cool breeze. Our life is but an instant in the long span of time that has formed such a valley, and it will still be there long after we are gone and forgotten, for others hopefully to enjoy.

We also noticed other people similarly in quiet awe as they emerged from the woods onto this sandy ridge and noticed the surroundings. For a moment, it made us forget everything, every bad thing, all pain, guilt, regrets vanish, and we feel reborn like a child, completely open, accepting and unquestioning, but with the added sense of gratitude that age informs us. It's a feeling I try to hold on to and think back on daily.

Winter is one of my favorite times to visit Zion! Here's a shot from the Court of the Patriarchs after a nice dusting of snow. But you have to act quickly since the snow doesn't usually stick around very long. By mid afternoon it had all melted! I'm getting excited for our upcoming Winter in the Desert Workshop. Let's bring on the winter weather!!

Here's another from that fantastic day in Zion National Park a couple months ago. I met up there with my friends Brian (chaybert) and Rob (Riverboy777)

Scouting trip to Zion turned out for the best.

Patriarch Kirill Celebrates Easter – A shocking aspect of the war raged by Russia on the people of Ukraine has been not just the absence of dissent by the Russian Orthodox Church, but the active encouragement offered to Vladimir Putin’s regime. Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Russia, as head of the church is a key ally of Putin and has called for Russians to support the war. In ‘Patriarch Kirill Celebrates Easter’ he is accompanied by a Minotaur, a beast used by Picasso in some of his work to embody the worst and most bestial aspects of humanity [Exhibition text].

This small trail is a great way to immerse yourself in a beautiful forest. There is a little bridge over a lovely little creek, and boy howdy, that is the wobbliest bridge I have ever been on. There is even a sign that advises that only 1 person crosses at any given time and I gotta say, stick to that advice. If you have a half hour to spare, it really is a great spot.

One of the most recognized landmarks in Zion National Park, Court of the Patriarchs reach into the Utah sky. These three photogenic peaks bear the biblical names of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Towering above Birch Creek Canyon almost 2000 feet, the Court of the Patriarchs represents nearly a full layer of Navajo Sandstone. This exposed sandstone is one of nine Zion rock layers that together span 150 million years of sediment deposits. The Patriarch cliffs represent one of the thickest layers of sediment, making up some of the tallest cliffs in the world. Occasional flash floods in the Virgin River increase water volume by 100 times and bring down tons of loose rock and sand, scouring out new side canyons and re-channeling the river. Here in Zion Canyon this magnificent scenery is always experiencing change, but its subtleties are seldom recognized in such an immense canyon.

A vintage, somewhat medieval scene.

The Court of the Patriarchs stand tall and bright in early morning light reflected in a horseshoe bend in the Virgin River.

This shot had quite an extensive post processing workflow. It was comprised of a total of 12 frames. It was taken as a vertical stitch panorama consisting of 4 vertical compositions but because of the high dynamic range of light it needed 3 bracketed exposures for each of the 4 compositions.

In Photoshop I took the 3 frames separately for each composition and manually merged them to get one single compositional frame with an accurate exposure. I did this for all 4 sets of bracketed shots. Once I had 4 frames with the correct exposures I photomerged them into this panorama.

Well... I'm finally back on my computer after a three day photo rampage. I met up with flickr friends Rob (Riverboy) and Brian (chaybert). Man... I don't know how anyone keeps up with that guy. He has to shoot about 27 different locations per day and plan what we will be shooting each hour of each day about three days in advance. I had forgotten what it was like trying to cram six months worth of photography into a 5 day trip, like I used to do back when I had a 'normal' job! So... Anyway... Thursday night, I arrived in Zion, slept in the back of my truck in preperation for the next mornings hike. Brian slept in his Prius, and Rob in a tent.

The Plan - We were going to hike the Narrows. (Wade knee deep through freezing cold water for several miles in a fairly narrow, very tall slot canyon) Brian wanted to leave at 6:30 am. This made no sense to me since it doesn't even start getting light out until 7:00. I was shooting to depart around 10:00. So we compromised. He agreed to leave at 7:00.

What actually happened - It rained all night. We all woke up around 7:00, freezing, wet, and miserable and sat there bitching about how much the night sucked, and tried to decide what to do. We knew the hike was pretty much out, because the sky was gray and it was still raining. Without any light, canyons look very flat and boring. We decided to drive to the nearest town and go to a Coffee shop. As we were driving towards the park, we could see all these spectacular storm clouds hanging super low and swirling around the mountains. I immediately said, "Forget the coffee shop. I'm shooting." So, we ended up spending almost the entire morning in the park shooting with some of the most FANTASTIC skies I have EVER seen!

"'Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool.

What kind of house will you build for me? says the Lord.

Or where will my resting place be?"

(The Bible - Acts 7:49)

I met those saddhus this morning as I was walking along the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras).

They always remind me The Patriarchs from the Bible and I wouldn't be surprised to know that the oldest living city in the world managed to keep them frozen in time...

It is the large tree in Villa Mimbelli in Livorno that some call Yew, others Monterrey Cypress. It has a diameter of six meters and a height of 30, this gentle giant that old age has made fragile. The aerial roots, those that are above the ground and have the task of ensuring stability against the winds, are now empty and reduced to fragments.

I love all trees but I love this one more because it is the expression of the struggle of living for old people like us. I go to visit it often and, when no one is looking, I hug it with affection and I feel reciprocated.

Stuff for old people, huh?

Northwestern* Milky Way “erupting” over the 3 Patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac & Jacob) in Zion Nat’l Park. I took this single exposure 4 nights ago with a fisheye lens—pointing almost straight up, which also captured a big cottonwood tree and part of a canyon wall behind me.

*That’s Cepheus, Cassiopeia and Camelopardalis rising up between the Isaac & Jacob peaks. Note Andromeda Galaxy just above the horizon, between Abraham & Isaac. Directly halfway up is the 7-star Pleiades constellation, above that is Hyades, and above that, in the middle of the tree branches, is Orion.

Yes, I'm still posting (yet more) images from Mt. Rainier. While not an exceedingly long trip, it was a successful one photographically for me. This was taken along the Grove of the Patriarchs Trail near Ohanapecosh (I love that word, just rolls off your tongue). I had never explored this trail before... it was short and sweet, and my favorite part was this suspension bridge.

The Court of the Patriarchs in Zion National Park near Springdale, Utah, are sandstone cliffs named for three towering figures of the Old Testament. They hold court over Birch Creek Canyon and that section of the Virgin River. In 1916 Frederick Vining Fisher, a Methodist minister, gave the religious names to the peaks.

Squidmano is one of the most feared names in the galactic underworld. He got his status after a one-squid raid on a Space Police HQ taking down a majority of the force and stealing a high security prison pod, along with capturing one of the ace agents of the space police, Agent Bobby.
