To the trains! The reason for the season is the patched pair pleasin' on Friday the 13th! I spent 11 hours pounding ground on the Cal Northern, gave Strench a call leaving Woodland and he had the eye on the patched pair returning west on the Mococco from Pittsburg with a late LRJ46. Kimmie Kim had caught the Friday edition of the YOZ85 Crockett Rocket off the Ozol extraboard and they were busy building their train with a set of armour yellow power. It was looking pretty bleak to get the rarest pair of locomotives in California out on the Rocket today.

46 Job got to Ozol with 10 minutes to work AND THE 85 JOB TOOK THEIR POWER! A beautiful day in the east bay (with a significant amount of sky junk near the horizon) and the Cotton Belt pair with the proper leader was coming out well before sunset.

So there's this shot at Rodeo. I had never seen it before I saw Davis Strench's shot of a leaser/yellow set switching here on this 85 job. So as far as I'm concerned he owns it and this is Strench Beach. After shots at Crockett and Selby,Davis, his father Bibb who's in town, Pete, Erie and I hiked in from the road and around the shit (waste treatment plant) keeping an eye to the ground trying to avoid hypodermic needles to line up our low light angles. Just out of view to the right the beach is overtaken with tents and garbage of California's ever-present beachfront homeless population.

The crew made a couple of moves up to the beach, the sun fell below the murk and we went and had a fancy-ass dinner that Bibb wouldn't let us pay for. And Kim, she was tied up before 10pm. A good time was had by all.

Norfolk Southern's former Conrail SD60I 5651 was sitting in Canadian Pacific's Bensenville Yard in 2007. In the distance, a former Soo Line GP40 still wearing its banditized Milwaukee Road colors was going about its day.

The NS 6761 has long since lost its blue and white paint scheme and the SOO 2057 went on to LTEX as their 3010 and current whereabouts per them interwebs more or less has it leased to the Kettle Falls International Railway in British Columbia.

In our area snow is still covering most of the ground in the middle of March, but there are also patches of snow-free ground here and there.

I think this is Yellow Patch (Amanita flavoconia) mushroom.

Photo taken hand-held. Amazingly, I was able to align and focus stack 9 photos, one of which had to be manually moved and masked. Then, I used a touch of an AI brush to clean up the mess between the focus and out of focus layers. HSS!

His name is Patch and he probably won't be giving those ears back.

This is the Teasel Patch I used to capture all the macros in. It was a good sized patch with many plants easily over 6 foot tall. Lucky for me there were some closer to the ground that still had some flowers on them.

This photo features the Crimson-patched Longwing (Heliconius erato), taken at the Emerald Valley Nature Center, Lake Yojoa, Honduras. Capturing the vivid red patches against the delicate black wings of this butterfly was a thrilling challenge. The setting provided a lush green background, making the butterfly’s colors pop. I used a slow shutter speed of 1/60 second to capture the fluttering movement of the butterfly, combined with an aperture of f/11 and ISO 800 to ensure a deep depth of field and crisp details. The Canon R5, paired with the RF 100-400mm lens and a 1.4x extender, allowed for an effective focal length of 560mm, essential for this close-up.

From a photographer's perspective, this image highlights the delicate balance between technical settings and the subject's natural beauty. The butterfly, in its later stages of life with parts of its wings worn, tells a story of survival and grace. Emerald Valley is a prime location for butterfly photography, thanks to the conservation efforts led by Robert Gallardo. His dedication to preserving these species is evident in the thriving butterfly population at the nature center.

I was visiting Mirror Lake, in the High Uinta Mountains in Utah on an overcast day, when a patch of blue suddenly opened up.

Even though they were patched for new owner Norfolk Southern, the blue beasts were still a nice sight when compared to that monochromatic thing third out.

Wearing patches over its DMIR paint, EJ&E SD-M #804 sits at Kirk awaiting its next job. Built as DMIR SD9 #169 in April 1959, this unit now works for IBCX.

A heavy fog descended on us this morning creating an interesting solid bluish backdrop to everything at first morning light. That "blue wall" is normally a free view over the sea to another shoreline 4 km away so it is very unusual to see it like this and I don't expect it to happen in the exact same way again. This lamppost with its yellow lights pointed at the green lawn below made for a weird and unusual combination of colours. I wasn't able to find a way to overcome the ugly circular artefacts introduced by the flickr algorithms but luckily they do not show up in the print.

Waiting at the tram stop and looked up to catch this brief patch of light in Bourke Street. Canon S100.

Rock Island 4509 was "patched" as CNW 4160 for the CNW Days at the Illinois Railway Museum and was in charge of the mixed train at Johnson Siding.

RI 4509 was sold to the CNW and renumbered 4160 after the RI shutdown. The engine came to the museum as CNW 4160, brought back to life, and repainted in the blue Rock Island scheme.
