Sinaaqpagiaqtuut/The Long-Cut is a three-part procession that begins in Kinngait | Cape Dorset, Canada, and continues in Toronto, culminating in an exhibition at 259 Lake Shore Blvd E. Works by youth participants are inspired by Kinngait-Toronto connections and look to the ways these distant places are tethered through waterways, art markets, artistic collaborations, and the night sky.

Sinaaqpagiaqtuut/The Long-Cut is a project by Embassy of Imagination, produced by PA System. It is co-commissioned and co-presented by The Bentway and the Toronto Biennial of Art, and is made possible with generous support from RBC Emerging Artist Program, Canadian North, and the Horace W. Walking into the Unknown Tupiq

PA System, 2015

Mixed media mural

This mural was created with the participation of the students of Frank Hayden Secondary School and led by artist collective PA System (Alexa Hatanaka and Patrick Thompson). The artists wanted to capture the excitement of Norton Community Park in their mural: A place where you land a new skateboard trick for the first time, run faster than you thought you could, discover something fantastic you never knew about before. These small moments entice us to keep striving, keep being curious, and illuminate our lives with possibility.

Excerpt from www.muralroutes.com: This past summer 2015, Mural Routes partnered with The PA System (artists Patrick Thompson and Alexa Hatanaka) on the Piliriqatigiingniq Mural Project, a collaboration with the ‘Embassy of Imagination’ collective of inuit youth from Cape Dorset, and youth from Toronto’s Oasis Skateboard Factory.

Piliriqatigiingniq is an unprecedented public artwork project: a collaborative, outdoor wall painting by Cape Dorset, Nunavut youth artists and Toronto students and graduates of Oasis Skateboard Factory (TDSB). Having travelled to Cape Dorset for the past two years to create art and host art workshops for youth, Alexa Hatanaka and Patrick Thompson, Embassy of Imagination, dreamt up this mural project to share the next generation of Inuit art during the Pan Am and Para Pan Am Games in downtown Toronto.

Piliriqatigiingniq, is a pillar of Inuit traditional knowledge, meaning to work together towards a common goal. Parr, 16 year old artist from Cape Dorset, often heard stories of his grandpa carrying a broken down snowmobile, which inspired his contribution to the mural. Parr’s figure at the base of the mural not only super-humanly carries a snowmobile, but also a pile of arctic animals stacked some 50′ high. Latch (14, Cape Dorset) drew the funky caribou, and bird atop the walrus head. Cie (18, Cape Dorset) drew the bulging walrus, and Audi (15, Cape Dorset) filled the walrus with hands, bird heads, fish, dog heads, and human faces. Julieta (19, Toronto) and Moises (20, Toronto) added vibrant patterning and colours that brought the image to life.

Chase's Ocean Grove in Dennisport on Cape Cod. These cottages faced the water (Nantucket Sound) and the beach road -- the "main street" -- in Chase's Ocean Grove in Dennisport, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. The owners of the Grove turned off the water and electricity between mid-October and mid-May every year. And the only phone in the Grove was in their office. (No cellphones then, of course.)

To call someone here, you contacted the office and someone there would announce your call over the PA system. The person you called would have to run down to the office to get it. That's how I notified my mother and stepfather in September 1976 (they lived in the Grove all summer) that our first child -- Andy -- had been born.

The building known as "The Office" on the main road through Chase's Ocean Grove in Dennisport on Cape Cod. The speakers up on the pole were for announcing telephone calls.

In the 70s the only phone in the Grove was in this office. There were no phones in the cottages. (No cellphones then, of course.) If someone wanted to call you, they had to call the office. Then somebody there would announce the call over the PA system and hold it for you until you could run down there to take it. In September 1976 they made an announcement like that for me so I could tell my mother and stepfather (who stayed in the Grove all summer) that our first child had been born.

Technician 3rd Grade Gilbert Ninneman, from Cascade Wisconsin, with Technician 5th Grade Robert Ryan, from Chicago Illinois, adjusting the controls of a public address system. Installed for use at a demonstration by the artillery of the 5th Infantry Division in the Mournes on 21 March 1944.

Public address systems such as that in the photograph were still in their technological infancy at the time, and the two valve (tube) amplifiers in the photo are possible examples made by RCA, bearing a resemblance to their MI-12224 system. With a tarpaulin at the ready in the event of rain, the two men have found an appropriate spot for the amps on some granite stones. Note the men's two weapons, propped up between them, An M1 Carbine and an M1 Garand.
