PAINTING photos on Flickr

Sandhill cranes "paint" themselves during mating season in the spring to better blend in. These cranes are naturally grey in color, but they add a reddish tint to their feathers preening with iron-rich mud. In the scene here, this bird apparently added black soot from ashes that accumulated after about 750 acres burning in March.

It's an interesting development if not unusual after extensive burns and is the first time I have seen it.
