Finally something other than an American Lady. Nothing against American Ladies but this is the first Painted Lady I've seen this year.
Male Painted Bunting, Passerina ciris, defending its turf as I watched two males chasing each other, this one emerged as the "apparent" winner.
.. from a print scan.. the pic was taken in August of 1976
I've been messing about with hundreds of old prints.. I'm trying a scan now and then.
I'm pretty sure a Nikon F3 was used for this.. my main camera at that time.. if not it would have been a Nikon F.
Thanks for looking in! - Have a great day!
A painted turtle covered with duckweed. Under the layer of duckweed, the water, although slow moving, is fairly clear, Algae and other aquatic plants are starved for sunlight.
Wildwood Lake, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Thank you for looking!
Many of my contacts who live in southern North America are already posting images of Butterflies on flowers. We are still a few weeks away from those opportunities, so I went back into my archives to find a similar shot that I haven't posted.
This was taken in in September, 2019. Painted Ladies were everywhere around Alberta then, but not seen here for the past four years. I hope to see them again this summer. They are an irruptive species here.
Another shot from my visit to the impressive Painted Hills, near Mitchell Oregon. Such a unique and fascinating area.
Friday's here! Enjoy a wonderful day and weekend ahead.
In the Darkness of the Night
It’s nice to have a Candlelight
It fills the Air with a magic Flair
This lovely and romantic Atmosphere
Is Balm for our Soul
But Feelings might get out of Control
There’s nothing better
Than a Candlelight Dinner
Especially in the Night
Of a very cold Winter

The painted stork (Mycteria leucocephala) is a large wading bird in the stork family. It is found in the wetlands of the plains of tropical Asia south of the Himalayas in the Indian Subcontinent and extending into Southeast Asia. Their distinctive pink tertial feathers give them their name. They forage in flocks in shallow waters along rivers or lakes. They immerse their half open beaks in water and sweep them from side to side and snap up their prey of small fish that are sensed by touch. As they wade along they also stir the water with their feet to flush hiding fish. They nest colonially in trees, often along with other waterbirds. The only sounds they produce are weak moans or bill clattering at the nest. They are not migratory and only make short distance movements in some parts of their range in response to changes in weather or food availability or for breeding. Like other storks, they are often seen soaring on thermals.(Wikipedia)

Vanessa cardui is a well-known colorful butterfly, known as the painted lady, or formerly in North America as the cosmopolitan. This is one of the butterflies that are always around our gardens.
Here are the stones Me & Emily have painted for Richards resting place, it’s like giving him a card.
One of five Painted Lady butterflies that I reared from the caterpillar to metamorphosis and released into the wild today.
Smile on Saturday theme: Paint(ed)
These rocks were painted for me by Tracey Bultji. She left more in special places around the neighbourhood.
Sometimes the best bird of the day is close to home. After making the trip to the coast in search of migrants and having little luck I spent the last couple of hours of sunlight birding very near my home where I encountered this Painted Bunting. I’m sure glad he seems to have set up a territory and to be here for the summer. Lucky me!!

A Painted Lady is an elusive type of butterfly that I would love to find and photograph but never have.
