Pictured at Milton Keynes was this Plaxton Premiere bodied Volvo B10M,of Arriva the Shires, seen here on driver training duty.

At a time when the Plaxton Pointer bodied Dennis Dart's are being replaced in large numbers it is nice to see that ARRIVA Kent & Surrey's Sheerness Depot are still operating a number of examples. Despite a net loss of three earlier in the year when route 333 (Faversham to Maidstone) was converted to Optare Versa's they still have eight examples in service.

Notice that a couple horses in the photo have on horse masks, a unique visual art form created by Native American artists. Masks were usually used for parades or ceremonies, not for battle, because they limited a horse’s range of vision. The art still thrives today. Outstanding examples of horse masks were at an exhibition called “A Song for the Horse Nation” at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. Here are a few examples:

Accompanying the slide is the following text clearly aimed at youngsters by the Keystone View Company:

“Long ago, when the Sioux Indians were wild people, the boys had many games. Some were with the bow and arrow, or wrestling, or swimming, or racing. Sometimes they had fights with mud balls. What would your mother say to this kind of game? One of the queerest sports was a war upon the nests of wild bees. They played the bees were Indian enemies. They painted their faces as their fathers did when ready for the warpath. Then with a warwhoop they rushed at the nest. If the bees stung them they pretended not to care. One of the best games of all was racing. Some of the Indian ponies are very swift. The boys learned to ride them with no saddle but with a blanket thrown over their backs. They did not guide the ponies with reins, but by their legs and the swaying of their bodies.

“In the picture are some grown-up Sioux Indians on their racing ponies. Can you see the feathers they wear? When the Indians were wild people, eagles’ feathers could be worn only by those who had done a certain brave deed. A war bonnet could be worn by a man who had won ten battles. A warrior might wear one with long, trailing plumes if he were a leader the Indians liked to follow. Other braves could wear feathers, but not eagles’ feathers or war bonnets.”

I photographed this BRM 160E at the Donington Park Museum in September 2014. BRM had introduced the P160 in 1971 and it had a relatively successful season, winning two Grands Prix and finishing in second place in the World Constructors' Championship. The car struggled the following season, however, and despite several updates couldn't match the Lotus 72 and when its successor the BRM P180 proved to be uncompetitive the P160 was updated yet again to produce the 160E. The P160E made its debut in the Spanish Grand Prix in April 1972, and despite Jean-Pierre Beltoise winning the Monaco Grand Prix BRM only finished in seventh place in the World Constructors' Championship. The team fared no better in 1973, again finishing in seventh place in the World Constructors' Championship with a solitary fourth place finish by Jean-Pierre Beltoise being its best points-scoring finish. In 1974 Jean-Pierre Beltoise finished in fifth place in the first Grand Prix, in Argentina, but after the Brazilian Grand Prix he completed the season in the P201, though the team used the P160E in several more races that year. The Donington Museum's car was BRM P160/10 and when the museum closed it was bought by Australian John Gale who set about a comprehensive restoration of the car.

A snowy winter panorama over the Principality of Monaco. This photograph was shot in winter 2013, from La Turbie, on the TĂȘte de Chien. Fortunately the sky cleared up after a heavy snowfall the day before, which enabled our local photographer to capture this panorama. Monaco itself hardly gets covered in snow, but hundred meters up the mountains, you can experience a totally different scenery. The photograph is available as a free download (5,120 x 3,200 pixels) for personal use here: crevis.io/p201 For commercial use, please contact Crevisio.

Brands Hatch, British Grand Prix 1974.

1997 Volkswagen Polo 1.4 CL 3-door.

The 1974 Formula One chassis - designed by Mike Pilbeam - and driven in that era by Jean-Pierre Beltoise, Henri Pescarolo and François Migault. In its first race - the South African Grand Prix of 1974 - Beltoise took a splendid second place but results went downhill after this, and at the end of the year the Owen Organisation withdrew its backing from the team. Run as 'Stanley-BRM' in 1975 and 1976, with little or no money and negligible development of the car, things rapidly degenerated and the once proud BRM team became something of a shambles, before the team finally called it a day toward the end of 1977.

This F1 paper car is a 1974 BRM P201 (driven by Jean-Pierre Beltoise), a Formula One racing car built by British Racing Motors and designed by Mike Pilbeam, the paper model is created by Spinler, and the scale is in 1:24.

This year has seen a significant number of the Plaxton Pointer Dart SLF's originally delivered to Maidstone & District be withdrawn from various ARRIVA Southern Counties depots and this example based at Sheerness was no exception.

Withdrawn because better condition Darts were made available following their replacement at Gillingham by Optare Versa's in July 2013, ARRIVA Medway Towns 3201 P201 LKJ is seen here earlier in the year on Chequers Road, Minster whilst working route 362. Thursday 14th March 2013.

It's currently stored at the small depot at Sheerness where its yielding parts to keep other members of the fleet in service.
