Another Cute Pygmy Owl

This little guy was content to stay high in the tree. No cool background for him, so why not go high key? We scouted many miles across the snowy roads to find these guys. While the searching was long, the payoff was made it worthwhile. Many thanks to Khanh Tran for his spotting skills and knowlege about owls and habitat.

I had to go back for more.

This is from 2012 when so many snowy's came south.

I was treated to a private show by this barred owl. Very tolerant, even turned his back on me while watching squirrels in the area.

Captured within the nurturing confines of the Avian Reconditioning Center in Apopka, Florida, this Barn Owl, Tyto alba, exudes an aura of enigmatic wisdom. The photograph reveals the owl's heart-shaped facial disc and deep, dark eyes, characteristic of its species. The fine detail in the plumage—white with black speckles on the upperparts and a beautiful mix of gray and tawny wings—illustrates the bird's silent but effective camouflage in its nocturnal hunts.

As a photographer, I strive to encapsulate not just the image but the essence of my subjects. Here, the Barn Owl's portrait is a testament to the quiet and often overlooked moments of natural majesty. The soft lighting captures the nuanced textures of the feathers, and the owl's calm, piercing gaze invites a moment of reflection, a silent conversation between the observer and the observed.

I was poised about 40 feet from the perch this owl was using when he spotted his prey. To my surprise, after he caught it he flew right at me and landed at a perch 15 feet from me. After landing, he spotted me, gave me a few looks, then devoured the grasshopper.

Something Looks Askew, is what this Northern Hawk Owl seems to be saying as she surveys the ground for dinner.

Saw-whet Stare

This little guy was very comfortable in the cluster of branches in this tree. He is looking down at me because the only way I could photograph the owl was to lay on my back in the mud. Guess an extension tube or shorter lens is in order...

Evening Light Flyby

This Short Eared owl was still hunting as the sun set.

Liftoff

This short eared owl just took off from a perch. Even 1/1600 didn't freeze the wingtips

The little vole did not stand a chance. This Northern Hawk Owl dropped from the tree and hit the ground so fast, I was lucky to press the shutter as soon as I saw movement.

This burrowing owl was in the process of ruffling when I snapped this paparazzi shot

I quite liked the striped multicolored background behind this Northern Hawk Owl. She has since moved on to new hunting grounds. Sure glad I got to see her before she left.

Went owling with some good friends in South East Washington and Northern Oregon. Khanh Tran was our Guide and he Located this Northern Pygmy Owl. With his voice he was able to call the owl to a location close enough to photograph. I positioned myself so that a tree would be the background instead of the sky. Due to the low light and snowstorm, I had to median average 3 shots to reduce noise. It is rare to have an animal sit still long enough to be able to do this but it really helps on high ISO shots. Then using Topaz AI Clear and DeHaze, along with color calibration adjustments the edit was finished.

This Northern Pygmy Owl landed on this short branch covered in lichen. It is amazing how fast their heads pivot from side to side looking for prey or preditor.

It was a dream for me not even to photograph an owl, just to see one. I have looked and roamed some popular spots of California, Oregon, Florida and even Jersey. All time long I was looking at the wrong place. Not that they don’t exist over there but it’s extremely hard to spot one unlike this coz you know it’s Spotted 😛

This Great Grey Owl seems to be quite displeased with the interruption in his preening regimen.
