This is the brown phase of an arctic fox sub-species known as the cross fox or the blue fox. It comes in a darker phase which has a slight blue overtone, hence that common name. This guy had a den near the fur seals, which I'm sure provided some sustenance. They were quite common around St. Paul.

Thank you very much for your comments and faves, regretfully, I am finding it increasingly difficult to reply to your comments, because of my very limited time on the internet, due to constant power interruptions in South Africa. I do read and appreciate every one of them, however! Thanks again!!

A drainage tunnel created by melt water on the Franz Josef Glacier. The Franz Josef glacier is located on New Zealand's West Coast (South Island).

Why is the ice blue? From Wikipedia:

Blue ice occurs when snow falls on a glacier, is compressed, and becomes part of a glacier that winds its way toward a body of water (river, lake, ocean, etc.). During its travels, all of the air bubbles that are trapped in the ice are squeezed out, and the size of the ice crystals increases, making it clear.

The blue color is often wrongly attributed to Rayleigh scattering. Actually, the ice is blue for the same reason water is blue. Namely, it is a result of an overtone of a OH molecular stretch in the water which absorbs light at the red end of the visible spectrum.

I found this color conditioner from a company called oVertone. My daughter linked me to them. I did a strand test on my grey-silver hair because natural grey hair accepts color differently than dyed-grey or blonde. Anyway, I love it. And I can't wait to do more.

The Mer de Glace, like all glaciers, is constantly renewed under the effect of two phenomena: accumulation, notably due to snowfall and ablation, essentially due to melting. The Mer de Glace flows permanently under the effect of its own weight.

The glacier's speed, although not perceptible to the naked eye, is considerable. From more than 120 meters a year in its upper part which is about more than one centimeter per hour. Did you know Glacier ice is the largest reservoir of fresh water on Earth?

The blue color is actually created for the same reason that water is blue, that is, its slight absorption of red light due to an overtone of the infrared OH stretching mode of the water molecule.

The general term ice age or, more precisely, glacial age denotes a geological period of long-term reduction in the temperature of the Earth's surface and atmosphere, resulting in an expansion of continental ice sheets, polar ice sheets and alpine glaciers. There have been at least four major ice ages in the Earth's past. Outside these periods, the Earth seems to have been ice-free even in high latitudes. There is evidence that greenhouse gas levels fell at the start of ice ages and rose during the retreat of the ice sheets, but it is difficult to establish cause and effect. Greenhouse gas levels may also have been affected by other factors which have been proposed as causes of ice ages, such as the movement of continents and vulcanism. Although the last glacial period ended more than 8,000 years ago, its effects can still be felt today. For example, the moving ice carved out landscape in Canada, Greenland, northern Eurasia and Antarctica. The erratic boulders, till, drumlins, eskers, fjords, kettle lakes, moraines, cirques, horns, etc., are typical features left behind by the glaciers.

It looks like the Grand Icy Canyon or the top of an iceberg but it isn't. The word "iceberg" is a partial loan translation from Dutch ijsberg, literally meaning ice mountain. In fact it's a photo of a melting hummock ice top taken at the IJsselmeer (IJmeer) near Amsterdam. This weekend it stoped freezing and there was lots of fog which gives the hummocks such wonderful water glow. A hummock is a boss or rounded knoll of ice rising above the general level of an ice-field, Hummocky ice is caused by slow and unequal pressure in the main body of the packed ice, and by unequal structure and temperature at a later period. Blue ice occurs when snow falls on the ice. The blue color is actually created for the same reason that water is blue, that is, its slight absorption of red light due to an overtone of the infrared OH stretching mode of the water molecule. Tonight is started freezing again. Will this winter ever stop?

The Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park is the largest hot spring in the United States, and the third largest in the world. The spring is approximately 250 by 300 feet (75 by 91 m) in size and is 160 feet (49 meters) deep. The spring discharges an estimated 560 gallons (2000 litres) of 160°F (71°C) water per minute.

The vivid colors in the spring are the result of pigmented bacteria in the microbial mats that grow around the edges of the mineral-rich water. The bacteria produce colors ranging from green to red; the amount of color in the microbial mats depends on the ratio of chlorophyll to carotenoids. In the summer, the mats tend to be orange and red, whereas in the winter the mats are usually dark green. The center of the pool is sterile due to extreme heat.

The deep blue color of the water in the center of the pool results from a light-absorbing overtone of the hydroxy stretch of water. Though this effect is responsible for making all large bodies of water blue, it is particularly intense in Grand Prismatic Spring because of the high purity and depth of the water in the middle of the spring. What could be more romantic and inspiring than a place that looks like a backdrop for a fairy tale? The medieval overtones of Bruges' cobblestone streets lead to countless historical, architectural and artistic wonders. Marvel at ornate houses lining intricate canals, and understand why this is a favorite destination for all types of travelers. The whole city emanates an appreciation of the past, a love of the present, and enthusiasm for the future.

Bruges is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium, in the northwest of the country.

Along with a few other canal-based northern cities, such as Amsterdam and Stockholm, it is sometimes referred to as The Venice of the North. Bruges has a significant economic importance thanks to its port and was once the chief commercial city in the world.

This was taken from the Ping Tom Memorial Park in China Town. I was really close to being under the 18th street bridge when taking this shot along the Chicago River. It was still a bit chilly out so the River was nice and still because boats were like, "Nope, I'm not going this far down the River yet." I imagine boats talk with a deep bass-like overtone.

Getting out to try my 150-600 lens I captured this gull. Using a single point of focus one tracks the bird so it wasn't until after the shot was taken I realized I caught the early rising moon.

My gull of course is named Jonathan after the 1970 book Jonathan Livingston Seagull.(see link for bio and information):

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Livingston_Seagull

If you read the bio on the book there was a spiritual overtone and a finding of life. A good way to start this holy week.

About November Rain and Guns N' Roses

'November Rain' is a single by the band Guns N' Roses, written by lead singer Axl Rose and released in June 1992. The music video for this song, also released in 1992, quickly became the most requested video on MTV, and won an MTV Video Music Award for Best Cinematography. It features a sweeping orchestral backing and is one of Guns N' Roses' longest songs.

'November Rain' appears on the album Use Your Illusion I. At 8 minutes and 57 seconds, it is a rock ballad in the tradition of 'Stairway to Heaven', 'Dream On (Aerosmith song)' 'Dust in the Wind' and 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. It is the second-longest song on that album, the longest being the 10-minutes and 08 seconds 'Coma'. Its distinct symphonic overtone owes to a sweeping string arrangement, orchestrated by Axl Rose. Most live performances during the Use Your Illusion tour lacked the orchestral backing of the song (the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards being the best-known exception). It is the longest song to reach the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. The song peaked at #3 on the chart, becoming the band's sixth and last Top 10 hit and eighth top 40 hit. On the radio, 'November Rain' is sometimes played in a shortened version of approximately six minutes, but many classic rock stations continue to play the full version. At around 7 minutes in, the song fades and then builds into a 2 minute guitar solo by Slash accompanied by vocal chants. This song is listed at number 6 in the The 100 Greatest Guitar Solos list by Guitar World. 'November Rain' was voted #1 on the Rock 1000 2006, an annual countdown of the top 1,000 rock songs by New Zealand radio listeners. It was voted #2 on the Rock 1000 2007, being beaten out by 'Back In Black' by AC/DC.

This photo taken before the sunset watching the colors of the hills change to a warm overtone. It appears like this could be from another planet.

This photo has much more dynamic range then what is being shown by Flickr. I use Archival paper, ink and certain color profiles, but uploads degrade the actual look online. FYI

The perpetual ice of the Pitz Valley Glacier in Austria is an impressive summer experience. The Pitztal Glacier is considered to be one of the most beautiful glacial areas worldwide. The Wildspitze mountain of 3,774m and the Taschach Eisbruch which is almost within reach. The highest mountain of the Tyrolean mountain range. Our hike takes us to an unusual outing to the glacier world. At the glacier trail you can enjoy beautiful views of the glacier. We see natural sculptures shaped by the creative power of the glacier ice. Rock formations with obvious glacier grounding, glacier caves and glacier arches. Blue ice occurs when snow falls on a glacier, is compressed, and becomes part of a glacier. During its travels, air bubbles that are trapped in the ice are squeezed out, and the size of the ice crystals increases, making it clear. The blue color is a result of an overtone of an oxygen-hydrogen in water which absorbs red light. The mixtures of clay, sand and gravel is part of glacial drift which was deposited by the glacier ice movement. An unique environment of untouched countryside and man-made landscape far beyond any mass tourism destination. The glacier trail brings us approx. in 2hrs to the Braunschweig alpine hut. The hut is located at 2759m in the outermost part of the Pitz Valley. The way back to Mittelberg - Mandarfen along the goods track takes about 2½ hrs.

The Pitztal glacier closes the valley of Pitztal. The summer is an ideal time for hiking. The Pitztal Valley is well known for its untouched, peaceful and ruggedly romantic landscape. At the glacier trail you can enjoy beautiful views of the glacier. You can see natural sculptures shaped by the creative power of the glacier ice. Rock formations with obvious glacier grounding, glacier caves and glacier arches. Glacial ice is a different color from regular ice. It is so blue because the dense ice of the glacier absorbs every other color of the spectrum except blue - so blue is what we see! The term Glacial Till refers to drift that is deposited directly from glacial ice and therefore not sorted. It is also referred to as Till and it is the mixture of rocks, boulders and soil picked up by a moving glacier and carried along the path of the ice advance. The glacier deposits this till along its path. Blue ice is revealed as the glacier melts and washed amounts of till away deposited by the rivers. The glacier trail brings you to the Braunschweig alpine hut.
