With very little discounting on domestic airfares combined with poor airline service reliability, there has been a small, but noticeable, swing back to domestic rail travel in the lead up to Christmas this year.

Even the poor twice-weekly Overland service from Melbourne to Adelaide has seen its usual consist of six vehicles increased to nine or ten.

Running about 50 minutes late, Pacific National loco NR35 heads Journey Beyond's Adelaide bound train, the last service before Christmas above Callington, South Australia @ 1730hrs on 23 December 2022.

The twice-weekly 'Overland' service from Adelaide to Melbourne drops downgrade near Callington, South Australia, on the morning of Thursday 1 December 2022.

The train is operated by tourist operator Journey Beyond and survives through subsidies provided by the Victorian and South Australian state governments.

The last of the winter ice clings to the canyon surrounding Overlander falls as spring takes hold. The falls are named after the Overlanders expedition of 1862 when a group of around 150 men with one woman (and her three children) travelled across the prairies and through the Rocky Mountains to BC, intending to reach the Cariboo goldfields. The falls are in the early mountainous stretches of the Fraser River which subsequently flows 1,375 kilometers (854 mi) downstream towards Vancouver. Thousands of these wagons brought settlers west to settle on land in the 'New World'. This one made it to Idaho City, where it now sits on display in the historical area of town.

Not long into its journey, VLine owned, EMD powered loco N462 leads The Overland Adelaide to Melbourne overnight passenger service through the Adelaide suburb of Lynton on 24 December 1993.

At this time the train was still running nightly in each direction, but loadings had decreased so that usually only one locomotive was required. These days the service has been reduced to just two return daylight workings per week.

Twilight shot of The Overland at Spencer Street, Melbourne, with N464 waiting departure on 2 August 1991, which I was about to catch back to Adelaide.

Back then it was a daily overnight service with sleepers, but today only runs two return trips a week in daylight.

A sleepy town called Yarra just on the outskirts of the Australian Capital Territory I came across a very old cemetery in Australian terms that is, being such a young country old is relative.

On Monday 13/10/2025, 2MA8 (The Overland) is seen at Kanmantoo (SA) with 9403 in charge. This was the first appearance of a 94 class on any passenger train.

Nowadays, it seems that any Class 1’s locomotive can show up anywhere in North America. In the 1970’s, foreign power showing up in a distant location was more uncommon. The Delaware & Hudson’s “Apollo” intermodal service to Oak Island would sometimes have UP power, but those trains were elusive and often nocturnal. Here a westbound Apollo makes a setout at Allentown on an overcast July morning. For some reason, I couldn’t stick around to get the train on the road, but any shot of UP power in the Lehigh Valley was a relative rarity.

A bit of V/Line dominance in the Hills on a wet and miserable morning at Belair, South Australia, sometime in 1989. C509 and two S class locos (S301/S312) on MA5 intermodal freight has been looped to allow the overnight Overland passenger service from Melbourne, with N458/S310 in charge, to overtake. A lone Australian National 700 (706) tries its best to hide as fourth unit on MA5 - June 1989.

On 26 October 1994, VLine broad gauge loco N460 seen at Yantaringa, South Australia, with a relatively short Adelaide bound overnight 'Overland' service from Melbourne.
