This is the grocery store I would go to as a Peace Corps Volunteer. The owner has since died. However, his daughter is now running the store. It was very run down. Ludzi now has more stores and a larger market. Back in the 80s, Overlands was the only store in town.
We left it too late to book places on the overland trek. They only allow about 30 people on it each day. It's a seven day trek along an old trade route from Cradle Mountain to lake St. Clair. Once you start the trek, there are no towns, shops or roads. You have to bring enough food to last you the entire trek, a tent, warm and water proof clothes.
We tried to book our spots in early December to start the walk in January but it was already fully booked.
We went to the end point of the trek instead and hiked back along it for a day. We passed by all the weary hikers who were on their final day. Most looked exhausted.
