Another take in b&w of the bus stop at Rathausplatz in Essen, Germany. Catching the overarching mall structure, the undulating corrugated roof and the traffic all in one take has been challenging my interest for quite some time.
Another set of misty frosty mornings over the weekend, the last probably for a couple of weeks, provided plenty of opportunities for capturing hoar frost images. Though the frost wasn’t as deep as it was in December.

Beginning five years after the events of Return of the Jedi (1983) and the fall of the Galactic Empire in the movie series Star Wars, The Mandalorian follows Din Djarin, a lone Mandalorian bounty hunter in the outer reaches of the galaxy. He is hired by remnant Imperial forces to retrieve the child Grogu, but instead goes on the run to protect the infant. While looking to reunite Grogu with his kind, they are pursued by Moff Gideon, who wants to use Grogu's connection to the Force.
Catch phrases are important in the Star Wars universe, and The Mandalorian is no exception. In the third episode of the show's first season, viewers are introduced to the overarching way the Mandalorian creed lives, and the code they live their life by. That code is summed up in one simple phrase: "This is the way."
Using obvious context, it would seem that "This is the way," is yet another ever-important Star Wars mantra, similar to the way that everyone knew and would say "May the Force Be With You," or how The Mandalorian's new buddy Kuiil loves to conclude his sentences with the inscrutable "I have spoken." You might also remember "I'm one with the force, the force is with me" from Rogue One. It's a franchise, clearly, that knows the value in repeated phrases—and ones that will stick with you, at that.

Holland used to be cows in meadows, now we have storehouse and business parks.
I'm all for progress, but sometimes there seems to be lack of overarching vision and sense of identity in the Dutch landscape. Holland is too small a country for every city to keep on eating up its surrounding meadows for yet another business park, while on the other hand there are lots of vacant office buildings and areas. We need more intelligent planning to prevent the scarce landscape from being jam-packed.
One of my favorite "new" flowers from last year. Sitting all by itself, this plant had survived years of being under the deep shade of the garden's huge oak. It was realllly hard to capture: my camera doesn't do well in deep shade. But, I didn't thing it wouldn't last to summer, and so I photographed it on at least 15 occasions. Well, I was very happy when I saw the beginning of the flower coming up from gnarled succulent-like furry leaves a couple of weeks ago.
I had trouble identifying it, as well. But with the help of some of the folk in Australia, here again, is a Ptilotus extenuatus, aka "Joey."
Ptilotus exaltatus, more commonly known as pink mulla mulla, is an erect annual herb endemic to large parts of arid and semi-arid Australia. It grows throughout most areas of Australia except the Nullarbor Plain, occurring geographically above a line drawn from Perth to Esperance. (I now know more about Australian states than I ever had when I was into birds, snakes, and octopi. I'd still like to see a Blue-ringed Octopus, but they move fast and they're deadly.)
This cone-like plant, known by the common name of Pink Mulla Mulla, is one of the biggest and rarest of over one hundred species within the overarching ptilotus genus. These plants have an ornamental silver-green foliage that's thick and fleshy. Its soft plumes are about four inches tall and drape gracefully over the leathery foliage.
Native to the dry, arid plains of Australia, the long-lasting blooms of the ptilotus appear soft and fuzzy, but they feel quite hard and bristly to the touch. Due to their texture, the blooms manage to hold up quite well in various weather conditions. They are similar in appearance to the celosia, and both are members of the Amaranthaceae family.
So, it's now Ptilotus Pfriday on my little corner of Flickr. But, it's an annual thing.

Berlin's Main Height Point, Britzer Garten
Due to World War II and the enormous construction activity in the following decades, previous height control points in Berlin had disappeared, and the remaining points of the control point field of the Berlin-wide main height network, created between 1948 and 1951, were no longer sufficient. In 1981, a complete renewal of the overarching height control point field – now only for West Berlin – was therefore decided upon, because due to the construction of the Wall, the points located in East Berlin were no longer accessible for the necessary network orientation. Therefore, a new, overarching height control point of the renewed overarching height control point field network was to be created as the Berlin (West) State Main Height Point and also prominently displayed. This opportunity arose on the grounds of the former Federal Garden Show in 1985 (now Britzer Garten) in the Neukölln district.

Yes, a still from the recent Robert Eggers film Nosferatu. But also my sunrise sky over Pt Arkwright in Queensland. Strange how the universe works sometimes, but it seems the vision of European Romanticism as the overarching visual aesthetic of the movie required a revised background mat for this scene, obviously analog to match the colour and character of the remaining 35mm footage, and sunrise over water. So look no further than the east coast of Australia. Rescanned and licensed to Paramount Pictures, this frame made the final cut, proudly playing a tiny part in one of the most beautiful cinematic creations of recent times.

This is a sculpture by Danish artist Jens Ingvard Hansen.
The sculpture is called 'Settlement'.
The artist says: "Settlement is a sculpture that, like human habitation, encompasses both an overarching structure but also an element of chaos".
Jens Ingvard Hansen studied at Aarhus School of Architecture in Denmark. He has worked with famous Danish sculptors Keld Moseholm and Søren West.

This was taken earlier this morning while watching the snow fall and cover a dogwood branch. I used the branches to frame another tree in the distance. We eventually got over 3" of heavy wet snow. It was our first snowfall for the season.

Like a wild chaos, the flow of water takes shape. As different as the lines of the water may be, they all follow one direction, all follow an overarching force downward. Thus, out of chaos, order emerges once again.

Interestingly, it was the aftermath of one of my recent storm encounters when I began to conceptualize the lure. My attraction to boundaries is part of it. There's a thrill-seeking component as well. But that is inextricably linked to a creative desire, rather than unadulterated risk taking. Many is the time I wonder if I would even be in whatever situation I find myself absent the camera. Truly I found myself on a completely different life path once I began devoting serious time and effort to photography. I began to see my world differently, but more importantly actually going out and seeing it in reality.
My realization the other day had more to do with the effect an episode such as this storm has on me (need not be a storm, could be just an event, but the storm will serve for this narrative). I recall how I felt when I turned onto this farm road and realized the extent of the storm. All at once, every last mundane thought of the workday vanished. All that mattered in this moment was the immediate environment. My mind switches into 'event' mode as it considers light, shadow, clouds, weather, wind...all of the factors that feed into the process of composing photos while simultaneously maintaining situational awareness, perhaps more accurately phrased situation appreciation. In this case it was the overarching transformation of a tranquil summer evening into an otherworldly view of light and shadow. Exquisite as always to be right in the middle of this.
Later, heading back home, my mind began to decompress. Suddenly I remembered that I needed to tend the recycle bins and take out the trash. And sort some bills. These thoughts and others quickly siphoned off my 'event' mode energy. I need to reengage my normal life but part of me wants to cling to the adventure, to remain in that other world. And then again the story can't be re-lived or recounted until it ends. A real conundrum. Of course a return to normal life is inevitable. I suppose the high energy moments need a counterpoint in order to be truly appreciated. Still a bummer. But even then, in the back of my mind, the memories remain and they are vivid. And there's the photos...
short films - the better half of her worst side - Sep/2025
There are always moments like this for each of us. It's what you can't see from the outside, the conflicts and struggles we wage unseen within ourselves. Franzi repeatedly makes this clear in her words and brings it to light. She always encourages self-acceptance and makes our own needs understandable. I am all the more delighted that I was able to translate this struggle into images with her in the studio. Every time I am in the studio with someone, new facets of the themes I am trying to capture in images open up to me, helping me to understand myself better in the process.

I kept this series practically closed as a self-portrait series for a very long time. I think it’s time to open it up and at the same time connect it to my overarching theme, the portraits. And now I've expanded the project even further and had a couple in front of my lens for the first time.
As a rule, these are long exposure shots with exposure times varying between 2 and 30 seconds. In this case 15 seconds. They are series that deal with a range of human feelings and thoughts. They deal with desire, loss, regret and pain and the attempt to process all of this.
Tuttomondo (English: All World) is a mural created by American artist Keith Haring in 1989. Located on the rear wall of the Sant'Antonio Abate church in Pisa, it is one of the last public murals executed before his death from AIDS-related complications in 1990. It is also one of the few outdoor public works created by Haring for permanent display.
In June 1989, Haring created the 180-square meter mural on the exterior southern wall of the Church of Sant'Antonio Abate. The mural took a week to complete. "Every day there would be more and more people." Haring later recalled. "When I put my last stroke on the wall, it all seems incredibly Felliniesque. It all seems utterly unreal–beyond anything I had ever experienced before."
The mural depicts 30 figures painted in Haring' cartoon-like style with an overarching theme of peace and harmony: "The 'human' scissors are the image of solidarity between Man in defeating the serpent (that is evil), which is already eating the arm of the figure next to it; the woman with a baby in her arms represents maternity, and the two men supporting the dolphin refer to Man's relationship with nature." (From Wikipedia)
U2 used Haring's art for the digital design of the giant screen in the Pop Mart Tour during the song One.
"One love, one blood
One life, you got to do what you should
One life with each other: Sisters, brothers
One life, but we're not the same
We get to carry each other, carry each other
One! One!"
