Autumn Color Reflected in the Cullasaja River Gorge

Macon County, Western North Carolina

Accessed via the Mountain Waters Scenic Byway (US-64)

Date taken: October 22, 2016

I hit a wall this autumn. Too many blue bird skies and breezy warm days. I did the macro thing; I even found some wildlife to occupy my lens. But, I needed landscapes. Luckily, one of my friends was in the area doing some shooting and he happened to post up a few takes on social media that I thought were super cool. He used a higher shutter speed and focused on the surface of the water to allow the rippled pattern to add interest to reflected light and color. The gears immediately started turning and I knew that I had to see if I could use a similar technique. A couple weeks later I found myself in the Cullasaja River Gorge on a blah sky day with colors well past peak. But, I had something new to try! So, Mike, this one is for you man! I thought it was great fun trying out some abstract work to make the most of what I could find! I appreciate your eye for creativity.

This was taken during the day in the pouring rain. As soon as I raised my camera to take the picture the lens got wet, but it actually didn't make much difference in the photograph. It wasn't quite this dark, but it should have been.

Not a juvenile and not an adult...probably the way 20-year olds feel in many States (too old for kid stuff, too young to drink...legally that is).

This 4th year American Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) was soaring overhead at Ding Darling NWR in Sanibel, Florida, USA. The adult will have an all dark body with a completely white head, neck and tail.

So here it is. I saw this guy for a split second and i knew i had to catch this crime on the camera :-)

Four Fallow Deer bucks, the younger of which is looking decidedly white! A little bit of a heat haze made things difficult, but this was great to see.

Val Thorens located in the Tarentaise Valley, Savoie, French Alps, is the highest ski resorts in Europe, at 2300 m altitude.

Given the high altitude of Val Thorens and the Glacier de Péclet the resort is often regarded as "snow sure". With the winter season lasting into early May and summer skiing on the glacier.

Many of its slopes face north and north-west, providing for good snow conditions. This means that the slopes are not as sunny, so the resort tends to attract a crowd more interested in skiing than "terracing." However, the resort itself faces south, and many people enjoy sitting outside in the sunshine when they have finished skiing. As well as a combination of 68 marked runs, Val Thorens also 5 terrain parks giving access to bordercross tracks, quarter pipes and jumps.

Val Thorens is the most international ski resort in France: more than 70% of its visitors are foreigners. While one will find people from all over the world in Val Thorens, British, Scandinavian, Belgian, Dutch and German tourists make up the majority.

Wishing Everyone a Happy Sliders Sunday!

The Carolina Wren is easily recognized by the white stripe above each eye and its distinctive "tail-up" posture that it assumes as it flits about the bushes. Energetic and vocal this little wren has one of the loudest songs of any small bird. Males sing their “tea-kettle-tea-kettle-tea-kettle-tea." song hundreds of times a day, all year long. One particularly busy bird was recorded singing almost 3,000 times in a single day!

Carolina wrens form lifelong pair bonds and pairs often stay together for years. The birds move and feed together, where you see one, you will usually see its mate foraging close by. The pair works together to build a nest, which can be in a tree hole or on a branch, but Carolina wrens are well known for choosing to nest in man made structures such as mail boxes, door wreaths, flower pots, or even a cardboard box in a garage. They use sticks, hair, feathers, and anything that looks suitable—even shed snakeskins. They often build multiple nests then select one to raise their chicks.

When feeding, a Carolina wren hops around on the ground and in the underbrush turning over dead leaves, and probing cracks and crannies for spiders, insects and larvae. They also eat fruit and berries, but rarely come to bird feeders.

A female lays 3-4 eggs, then incubates them for 14 days, during which time the male brings her food. The parents feed the chicks in the nest for two weeks, then, after the chicks fledge, the parents continue to feed them for a further two weeks. A pair of Carolina wrens can have three broods in a year.

This wren is the state bird of South Carolina.

I found this one in my backyard. Lake Wales, Florida.

...y gira_

Picture a valley of sheer cliffs and vivid red streaks and rock formations that don't even belong on this planet. Picture a thousand crevices and overlooks, completely unfenced, no ropes or safety rails or signs. And picture no one else there to spoil it.

Picture all that and you get Coal Mine Canyon outside Tuba City, Arizona. I'd never heard of it in my life and doubt I would have been able to find it on my own without a geologist friend from Flagstaff leading the way. But I'm certainly glad she did. I could have explored a place like this for hours and that's just on the rim, not down in the valley itself. Nature, you are stunning.

Kirkjufellfoss lies in the shadow of the mountain kirkjufell . This scene is located a few minutes outside of the beautiful town of Grundafjordur on the Snaefellsnes peninsula in Iceland. The image is a blend of the HDR image with the -2EV shot for teh mountain and sky. Viewing iceland through the naked eye is as if one is in CGI and HDR landscape which is why i've chosen to take most of these images in this way.

Songbirds are a big commodity in South East Asia. You will find them all over the place, decorating the outside of homes and streets. People take pride in showing theirs off and some can fetch a high price on the market. As sad as it is to see these lovely animals caged away by the thousands, they do add a very nice ambiance to the otherwise cold gas-guzzling street sounds. The white-rumped shama thrush is one such songbird, seen here.

I'm well outside my comfort zone today.....

I nearly deleted this shot when I downloaded Sunday night's pictures to the laptop. But there was something about it that I found appealing. It's a shot of the sun setting over Earlswood Lake and I was trying out that 'zoomy' thing where you shift the zoom as you're shooting. Maybe someone can tell me if there's a better, more technical term I should be using :))

So named because of the appearance of my hair. This is a self portrait left over from a past LGC week. I'll be catching up with this project and others as soon as my exam is over, I promise!

It's good to be back in Melbourne if only for a stopover day in order to catch the ferry, the Spirit of Tasmania, to Devonport tonight. It's quite something to be here at the weekend... It almost seems that Australians turn into a different species of Homo sapiens in the revelling fun they have in relaxing. A bit like our Butterfly today perhaps.

It's called Australian Painted Lady, Vanessa kershawi, and it much resembles other Vanessas 'round the globe. Apparently though, the males' genitalia are quite specific to this Australian form and thus was born Vanessa kershawi.

Here it's having a go at pretty Strawflower, Xerochrysum bracteatum (www.flickr.com/photos/87453322@N00/2850784049/in/photolis...) in the fine Royal Botanic Gardens of Melbourne.

Winter is coming, er, its here. And all I can do is dream of summer. And powder skiing. Its okay to hold two contradictory thoughts at once right? Thought exercise.

From Audubon:

Flocks of Glossy Ibises wade in the shallows of eastern marshes, probing for food with their sickle-shaped bills. Widespread in the Old World, the species is found in the Americas mainly in the West Indies and along the US Atlantic Coast, especially Florida, where it was quite scarce as recently as the 1930s. It may have invaded within the last few centuries, riding the trade winds across from West Africa to the Caribbean.

a view of the lac of jokulsarlon in iceland! The Jökulsárlón, Icelandic place name literally means in French "Glacier Lagoon" is the best known and largest proglacial lakes in Iceland. It is south of Vatnajökull glacier between the Vatnajökull National Park and the town of Höfn. Appeared between 1934 and 1935, its area is about 18 km2 today. Its maximum depth of 260 meters gives it first place among the deepest lakes countries1. Near the Jökulsárlón are two other proglacial lakes, the Fjallsárlón and Breiðárlón.

Vorrei… vorrei… vorrei…

Non finire mai…

…I wish I was a sailor with someone who waited for me, I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me, I wish I was a messenger and all the news was good...

…I wish I was the pedal brake that you depended on, I wish I was the verb ‘to trust’ and never let you down…

...I wish I was a radio song, the one that you turned up. I wish… I wish… I wish… I wish…

I guess it never stops

The day that I drove up to the north of Scotland was an incredible experience. It was perfect and idyllic for photography. It was a gorgeous spring day and my eldest son and I decided to go for a mystery drive to the mountains, we filled the car with fuel and off we went, it was a round trip of 450 miles and it was so worth it. For this shot, I got my feet well and trully frozen and soaked, it was the last time I wore those old walking boots but for this shot, I would do it again but this time, I'd probably go barefoot.
