Oryx in Kalahari desert, Namibia.

This large antelope with its striking appearance of long horns and distinct colouration is the national animal of Namibia. The Oryx, also known as the Gemsbok, occurs in the more arid regions throughout the African continent where it feeds on course grasses and thorny shrubs.

The Oryx was chosen as Namibia’s national animal due to its courage, elegance and pride – with the national coat of arms bearing this unmistakable dweller of the desert.

In the expanse of the Arabian Desert, the sacred Oryx roam everywhere and ignores any human interest. They bear the scars of their own territorial arguments. This fine specimen was ambling past our 4 x 4 and didn't bother to look up.

Love the vastness of the landscape!

A line of Oryx advancing to a nearby waterhole.

Oryx have an unusual circulation system in their head. They are able to cool the blood flowing to their brain through the capillaries in their nose as they breathe.

When it gets too hot and shade is not available, oryx dig shallow holes for resting and cooling down.

A close-up profile of a gemsbok from The Kalahari. This animal, unlike several we saw, had symmetrical and undamaged horns. The black and white facial markings are highlighted in this shot. More at "Colin Pacitti Wildlife Photography & Fishing Travels" - www.colin-pacitti.com.

This is one of my little models called an Oryx. They live in

Africa. But since I don't have photos of Africa, I placed the Oryx in one of the photos I took while walking the Black Diamond Trail in Upstate, NY.

Oryx in the water during a hot day in Etosha - Namibia

Oryx can survive for extended periods in extreme heat without water, but here they take the opportunity to wade into the water to drink and cool down.

I wouldn't really call it a duel these Beisa Oryx were engaged in - more like a friendly tussle. Those horns are long and straight - get this guy standing just right and it can look like a single horn, thus it's sometimes dubbed the "unicorn".
