Auguste Rodin, ca. 1887

I was going through some older photos. This one is from the time I spent in Arizona. I usually carry kit lenses on trips.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid-Holland, Rotterdam, Blijdorp Zoo, Chimney, Statue (slightly cut from all sides)

The Open Monumenten Dag (Open Monuments Day) brought us to Blijdorp Zoo. The building and urban design of Blijdorp Zoo were both designed by Sybold van Ravensteyn, the only architect in the world to have done so, and, alas, is also known as the architect from whom a significant percentage of his work has been prematurely demolished. As an architect, his primary role was head architect of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (Dutch Railways). His most famous station was Rotterdam Central Station. His style can be described as romantic-modernist.

Seen here is the chimney of the former Lion’s house, now used for the Gelada’s. Van Ravensteyn adorned the chimney with a statue of Orpheus while charming the animals with his instrument - lookin' like a Lute. It should have been a Lyre, he used some poetic licence here,

This is number 22 of the Blijdorp Zoo album.

New Orleans, Louisiana, NOLA, LA. Stairwell, stairway, stairs, steps.

Orpheus takes the form of an inverted pyramid, sunk into the earth and open to the elements. It is at once a negative space and a sculptural form. Its serene lines seem to invite you to descend into its depths and enjoy the tranquillity.

With rejuvenation of the garden gathering steam, the current Duke was passionate about adding a 21st century edge. He wanted a creative endeavour that would compliment and enhance the triumphant landscapes of his ancestors. So the Duke commissioned Kim Wilkie to design a striking new landform, Orpheus. It is named after the famed musician of Greek mythology who, when his wife Eurydice died, went down into the underworld to try and reclaim her. His music was so beautiful that Hades relented and allowed Eurydice to return to the world of the living.

We had a great holiday chasing birds in flight on Shetland and Orkney. Then a few days sauntering back to South Wales. Sadly and unexpectedly Eurydice left, so I went down the beach at night to build a boat and sail over to the underworld to try and get her back. Orpheus is by Sara Bareilles.

Or is it Orpheus (or Cocteau's ORPHÉE) seeking what's on the other side of Alice's (or Eurydice's) Looking-Glass?

NOTE: Re my recent absence from Flickr, I have paused. Diverted. I'll come back in a bit to say more.

It's something to do with the mirror, and the window. And to the inflexibility – if not downright stubborn unresponsiveness to the authorship of photographers – of Flickr.

Orpheus rocks (Орфееви скали)

View from the Orpheus rocks, Rhodope mountain, Bulgaria.

"According to the legend preserved and passed from generation to generation by the inhabitants of the Rhodope Mountains, Orpheus was inspired by the view, revealed from this place, and this is why the rocks bear his name."

The Terrace and it's formal garden was designed in the 1840's by Sir Charles Barry and has commanding views over the Capability Brown landscape beyond. The Terrace was fully restored in 1994 as the elaborate flowerbeds had been grassed over in 1959.

The statue of Orpheus was added in 1984 when the original staue collapsed.
