Description: Syngamia florella is a diurnal moth belonging in the order Lepidoptera, superfamily Pyraloidea, family Crambidae, subfamily Spilomelinae (previously treated as Pyraustinae) and tribe Spilomelini.

The moth displays bright colors; the wings are colored brownish with intense yellowish-orange maculations spread all around. The abdomen is red but can vary in tones. The moth's wingspan lies somewhere around 1.5cm. They are normally seen during the day visiting flowers for nectar, a behaviour that earned it its common and scientific nomenclature. The larvae of Syngamia florella are known to feed on Spermacoce brachysepala, Spermacoce tetraquetra, Spermacoce laevis, Spermacoce verticillata, Richardia sp. and Borreria brachysepala among others. The adults feed on a lot of flowers, such as Bidens sp. and Mikania sp..

The species is neotropical in distribution, being found from south of the West Indies through Mexico to Argentina and from South Carolina to Florida and Arkansas to Texas. The subject portrayed was found in Brazil, Santa Catarina, Benedito Novo. Their natural habitats are often weedy places, which also includes it into the anthropic environment as visitors of gardens.

Feeding type: Adults are nectarivorous. Larvae are poliphytophagous.

Seen flitting from flower to flower on a floriferous verge at the back of the truck stop area - a bit different to what you'd see on the M25! A very colourful member of the Crambid family. Only a 15mm wingspan, I had the wrong lens on [100-400mm zoom] and it had gone by the time I had changed to my macro lens. Hence the heavy crop!
