San Jose, California
Nikon F80 // Provia 100F // Nikkor 50mm 1.8D
On Wednesday, Sept 9, 2020, the skies above northern California went orange from wildfire ash high in the atmosphere. The ash was suspended high above by a marine layer of air beneath it, and didn't begin reaching the ground until the next day, when the eerie orange sky was replaced by one of dull white. I took these photos on a 2.5 hour bike ride through Santa Clara and San Jose around in the early afternoon using a sunlight-balanced, natural-color slide film, with the camera automatically metering at the box speed of 100. Despite it being mid-day, it was very dark -- to achieve shutter speeds faster than 1/100, the aperture was never slower than f/4, and usually set to f/2.

(Straight from the camera) I woke up this morning to a weird orange glow coming through the window and look out and the sky is all orange ..... apparently a huge dust storm bringing the orange dust from Central Australia to the NSW coast. The airport at Sydney is closed and traffic is in chaos everywhere. It looks like being in a science fiction movie .... but it's real lol Look at the pics from Monday morning and there is a vast difference in the look of Bateau Bay .... These were taken after 6.00am and the 2 sunrise photos were taken at about 5.45 am
London, England, 1792 and disgraced former adviser to King George III, Thomas Stewart, is on the run. Knowing he has only hours before the authorities catch up with him, he unlocks the door to his secret workshop and attempts to complete the Great Experiment. The dream: to create the 'Philosopher's Stone', an alchemical device so powerful it can transmute base elements into pure gold... The hypothosis: that the right combination of light, focused through a crystal sphere, onto a receptive mineral specimen would yield untold power and riches. The problem: someone had been talking, and the authorities wanted the power for themselves. The solution: flight, hopefully taking the finished Stone with him, but had The Experiment worked? Would he be able to get away? Where would he go? ................................................. Composing this shot was almost as hard as making a Philosopher's Stone!! An awful lot of work has gone into preparing the little potion bottles, and into getting the lighting and composition right. I've been planning this, on and off, for a few months — I have some ideas around related subjects...#narrative #stilllife #still_life #leatherbound #antiquarian #crystalball #alchemy #alchemist #fiftyshadesoforange #orangewednesday #oxfordshire #uk #most_deserving #photowall #all_shots #uk_photooftheday #icatching #bd #markmakingdesign #philosophersstone #sorcerersstone

Atmospheric fallout from numerous wildfires mixed with fog, held in by inversion layer.. Best viewed at size shown because of all the ash in the air and lack of resolution. Also because camera was hand-held in difficult conditions, and I forgot to change the settings. Not a good quality photo, but posted to share just how dark it was in the early afternoon of 9/9/2020. This follows record heat for 3 days in San Francisco - meaning up to 100 degrees. Records were broken for heat in various locations in California.
Wednesday, September 9th, was the 23rd straight day of bad air here. It's also the day the sun died in San Francisco.
It's all related to climate change. It will get worse if people don't wake up and take care of the only planet we have. That includes caring for and about other peoples, the land, water, air, birds, bees, and wildlife.
We are all in this together. "We have but one planet, there is none to spare."

Dark like this most of the day. Camera hand held, and I was somewhat freaked out, so focus isn't the best. Plus I couldn't see the dials on the camera.
Had to rework tags several times because some sick people are using tags like 'wildfires' and 'California wildfires' to dump photos of overly endowed or scantily clad women to. I guess the suggestion is that they are 'hot.'
Given that lives have been lost, that first responders (fire fighters and volunteers), and hundreds of others have lost homes, relatives, animals, irreplacable records, heirlooms, family pictures, and EVERYTHING they owned except the clothes on their backs, I don't feel attaching sexual innuendo to wildfires is appropriate. It isn't art in my mind's eye, and the situation is NOT humorous. Nor is it to be taken lightly.
Hopefully the posters who uploaded the distortions will grow up, and come to understand that wildfires are proof of our changing climate, which shouldn't be taken lightly as all our futures depend on stopping and reversing the growing extremes of climate change.
"We have but one planet, there is none to spare."
