Guiné-Bissau. Uno (Bijagós)

The trip from Bissau to the Island of Uno (Bijagós) took almost five hours in a small boat. Considering that the flight from Lisbon to Bissau takes four hours, we can say that it is not easy to go to the most remote islands of Bijagós. Though it is a long trip in a small vessel, I enjoyed it because of the beauty of the sea and of the islands we were discovering along our trip. When we were getting closer to our destination, the island of Uno, I was taken by surprise with this reception: people were chanting local songs to welcome the team from "Mundo a Sorrir".

Bissau.

I met this little kid picking up cashew nut from the ground during school time. Cashew nut has to be picked up immediately after it falls from the trees. Only then the fruit is good to be eaten and the nut kept tp be sold later. You can see a lot of women and children under the trees waiting for the cashew nut to fall on the ground. This little kid started cooperating in the family business too young. Will he be given the chance to get a proper education?

These young boys were not participating in the classroom activies, but they were curious about was happenning there. Dentists were inside teaching the youngsters how to clean their teeth and delivering fluoride to their teeth to protect these from dental caries.

During these sessions children were given a toothbrush and a toothpaste to start their oral higienic routines at home. They reacted with a lot of enthusiasm whenever they received these small gifts. They seemed to be so happy with so little!

I took some photographs on an event that took place in Porto last weekend, "Porto Innovation Week Water", where "Mundo a Sorrir", a Portuguese ONG, was present to remind people and teach children that oral higienic habits keep the mouth and the body healthy. Teaching children how to brush their teeth correctly was their goal.

I am using one of those to pay an homage to "Mundo a Sorrir", the Portuguese ONG who is completely devoted to oral health and has been doing a splendid work in Portugal and PALOP countries = Oficial Portuguese Speaking African Countries. .

Our Portuguese President, Prof. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, yesterday visited the new installations of the Portuguese ONGD "Mundo a Sorrir" in Porto. Before entering he was "caught" by a group of university students who asked for Selfies with him and autographs. He kindly did everything they asked, even autographed their T-shirts when paper was missing..

Way too long to wait by the look of this patient ... or should I say patience ran out, but the patient didn't! :)

This is an exhibit at the Herberton Pioneer Museum, on Australia's Atherton Tablelands, in far north Queensland. As a kid I used to say a place very much like this used to scare the life out of me ... then I find this! LOL

Thank goodness for more modern methods these days

The information shows the main equipment being used is a Borden air/water unit. These were messy devices needing the dentist to wear waterproof apron to catch the overspray.

Dental Care is important for all ages. Dr. Rakesh talks about Pediatric Dentistry, Adult Dentistry and Geriatric Dentistry.

I visited a new dentist today and was extremely happy with all team members. The dental hygienist (and her husband who is a professional photographer) are both photographers so it was hard not to talk during the procedures.

This morning took me to the dental surgery for a brush up and check up.

He's introduced a numerical scoring system now, ranking different different aspects of oral health to produce a summative figure.

I'm currently scoring 84, which is considered to be very good, though I'm scoring low in one area for reasons you just don't need to know. Why is it that nobody wants to hear dental stories but everyone wants to tell them?

I get the feeling that in ten years the scores will be a rich resource for data mining. Let's see how that pans out!

This summer, East Tennessee State University College of Public Health DrPH students and Frist Global Health Leader scholarship recipients, Ms. Twanda Wadlington and Ms. Megan Quinn, worked with a local NGO in Munsieville, South Africa called Lagae La Bana (Home for the Children). The organization focuses on servicing orphaned and vulnerable children with daily meals and social support throughout the year.

Ms. Wadlington and Ms. Quinn worked with the students on a variety of programs, one of which focused on basic hygiene techniques such as oral health and hand washing. Ms. Wadlington led the oral health education of the session, while Ms. Quinn led the hand washing education.

During the oral health session the children learned the proper method of brushing their teeth in a circular motion, brushing the tongue, and the proper method of flossing. Most of the group had never seen or used floss before; so this was a new, yet exciting experience for them. To conclude the oral health education, Ms. Wadlington asked the group, “What happens if you do not brush your teeth on a regular basis?” The children responded with tooth decay, bad breath, plaque build-up, and diseases. They then discussed the types of diseases that occur from bad oral hygiene, such as gingivitis and bleeding of the gums. The oral health education ended with questioning from the students, ranging from sharing toothbrushes to the proper time to change a toothbrush. Each participant was given toothbrushes donated by the Thoughtful Path: Munsieville.

Weird Fact: The average American spends about 38 days brushing teeth over his or her lifetime. Orthodontist Anchorage

Children’s Dental Day, hosted by the UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln on Friday, April 14, 2023.

Nearly one-third of all adults in the United States have untreated tooth decay. One in seven adults aged 35 to 44 years has gum disease; this increases to one in every four adults aged 65 years and older. In addition, nearly a quarter of all adults have experienced some facial pain in the past six months.

Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic infectious diseases among U.S. children. This preventable health problem begins early: 28 percent of children aged 2–5 years have already had decay in their primary (baby) teeth. By the age of 11, approximately half of children have experienced decay, and by the age of 19, tooth decay in the permanent teeth affects two-thirds (68 percent) of adolescents. Low-income children have twice as much untreated decay as children in families with higher incomes. This may result in pain, dysfunction, underweight, and poor appearance—problems that can greatly reduce a child's capacity to succeed in the educational environment.

NHANES is critical for monitoring oral health status, risk factors for disease, and access to preventive and treatment services.
