Sh2-185 is an emission and reflection nebula, visible in the constellation Cassiopeia; it consists of two distinct nebulous regions with different characteristics. Its position is easily identified thanks to the fact that it surrounds the brilliant star γ Cassiopeiae, a Be star well known for being the prototype of the variable γ Cassiopeiae, belonging to a class of young and very hot stars; the bright nebula part can be identified in particular in a north-east direction with respect to the star, where there are two nebulous gatherings known as IC 59 and IC 63. In the photographs the reddish color of the ionized gas is clearly evident mixed with the bluish color of the dust which shines by reflection of the blue star light. Its observation is possible especially from the regions of the northern hemisphere, due to the high northern declination; in the evening sky it reaches its peak in the autumn months, between October and December. From the southern hemisphere it is possible to observe it only starting from the subtropical regions, up to the equator. Sh2-185 consists of a partly well-lit cloud system, located at the same distance as γ Cassiopeiae; the brightest sections are made up of the two nebulae cataloged in the Index Catalogue: IC 63, the southernmost, shows an evident structure of gas filaments, with optical emissions dominated by the red color, while IC 59, to the north, appears as a cloud with a partly bluish color and no organized structure. In particular, IC 63 consists of a region of ionized hydrogen and shows evident signs of photolysis. This phenomenon is very evident especially in IC 59, while in IC 63 the presence of strong ultraviolet radiation suggests the formation of a neutral hydrogen zone through the dissociation of molecular hydrogen.

My first post for a long time, the reason being I've been learning astrophotography and setting up my new gear to take images of the cosmos.

This is the Rosette Cluster and Nebula, NGC2239/NGC2244/C50 and NGC2237/C49 in the Monoceros region of the Milky Way.

This image is 2-panel mosaic of NGC 3372 (Eta Carinae nebula), one of the brightest and largest DSOs in the night sky.

The image is the result of a 2-panel mosaic in SHO. Aiming at a 9-panel mosaic to cover the entire nebula...hoping my computer's graphics card can handle it 😅. A total of 14hr integration time so far.

The Humunculus nebula is a very difficult object to be photographed by amateur astrophotographers. With a combination of very short exposures, I was able to partially solve the nebula even while photographing with a telescope with little aperture. I hope you like the result.

Christmas Day at Lake Ninan.

Hit the road for a cruisy 2-hour drive with barely a car in sight—too easy! Got there early to have a wander, soak up the peace, and kick back before night time.

As the sun called it a day, the night sky fired up. Airglow lit the sky, and even though some cheeky clouds rolled in later, the view was nothing short of unreal.

This image’s an 86-panel pano, showing off the epic beauty over one of Lake Ninan’s dry ponds.

Eastern Veil Nebula (C33)

I've recently upgraded my astro setup with a new scope (Takahashi FSQ-85EDX Baby Q) and also had several clear nights to try it out (amazing as new gear normally comes with clouds). I've also been learning AstroPixelProcessor for stacking and processing which has made a big difference to the final results.

The Eastern Veil nebula (designated parts IC1340, NGC6992 and NGC6995) is part of the larger Cygnus loop - a supernova remnant about 1500 light years away in the Cygnus (Swan) constellation and is 5000-8000 years old. The total size of the nebula is about 3 times the width of the full moon.

(Wikipedia)

This was not taken with a telescope but rather my old Nikon 750 with a 135mm lens. It wasn't visible to the naked eye, at least by me, it certainly could be but for the moon and it's low position in the sky. From top to bottom this image spans 15 degrees (The equivalent of 30 moons!) and yet the tail is still clipped. I thought for sure I could get the whole comet in the frame. I also collected some images with my telescope, but that's just of the nucleus.

from space.com:

"Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) has recently passed its closest approach to Earth and is now heading away from the Sun, though it's still visible in the night sky. After reaching its perihelion on September 27, 2024, it's been one of the brightest comets this century. The comet was closest to Earth on October 12, 2024, at a distance of about 71 million kilometers (44 million miles)

The initial calculations suggested that Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) was on a long-period orbit, potentially returning every 80,000 years, which would categorize it as an orbital comet. However, recent updates have indicated that this might not be accurate. As astronomers continue to gather more observational data, they've noted that the comet's path may actually lead it out of the solar system entirely, suggesting a possible hyperbolic trajectory rather than a closed elliptical orbit. This means that Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) could be a non-periodic comet, visiting the solar system just this once before heading back into interstellar space, never to return. The distinction between a long-period and a hyperbolic orbit hinges on precise measurements and observations over time, which are still being refined for this comet.

As a comet approaches the Sun, it releases gas and dust. The finer dust gets pushed directly away from the Sun, forming the dust tail. However, some of the larger particles lag behind the nucleus along its orbit, essentially forming a trail. When Earth passes through or near the plane of the comet’s orbit, these larger particles can be seen in profile, appearing to spike straight out from the nucleus towards the Sun. This is the anti-tail.

The anti-tail is best visible when the Earth crosses the comet's orbital plane at or near the comet's tail. It's essentially an optical illusion from our vantage point; the dust isn't really heading towards the Sun but instead spreads along the comet’s path, seen edge-on. This alignment can make the anti-tail appear as a bright spike or fan emerging from the comet, creating a spectacular and somewhat counterintuitive visual"

This shot almost didn’t happen! I was on my way to another location with a similar landscape when I drove past this spot. Something about it caught my eye...it was dark but with the help of the moon I could roughly see a dark structure standing alone at the top of a tiny hill, so I pulled a U-turn, checked it out to find out it was a lone tree, so I decided to stay instead of driving another 15-20 minutes for similar composition.

With the moon high and bright, I took advantage of the natural lighting—capturing some foreground shots, set up for the sky, then waiting for the moon to set (with a quick nap in between).

The result? Rho Ophiuchi region rising behind this lone tree, bathed in soft moonlight. ✨🌙

Capturing this image was no walk in the park! Cape Leeuwin, famously the most south-westerly mainland point of Australia, is where the Southern Ocean and Indian Ocean are said to meet. With no landmass to the south, the fierce southern winds batter this area relentlessly—this night was no exception, with gusts hitting around 70 km/h. Even the sturdiest rig would struggle, and the foreground caught a touch of motion blur from the chaos...especially the grass.

Adding to the challenge, the lighthouse is surrounded by fencing far from the structure, and it closes at 5 PM, leaving no chance to get closer after hours. It is lso left unattended, so, my plan to snag permission for a post-5 PM shoot was dashed.

I hunkered down behind some rocks for a bit of relief from the wind and lucked upon some wildflowers in the foreground. The lighthouse may look tiny from this distance and angle, but I promise—it’s there! 😉

The final image is a 4x6 vertical panorama, and while it wasn’t easy, the effort was worth it to capture this wild and beautiful spot.

Monkey Head Nebula NGC 2174/2175

This is my first image with my new dedicated cooled Astro camera, a ZWO ASI533MC-Pro.

The Monkey Head Nebula, NGC 2174, is a Hydrogen Alpha emission nebula in the constellation Orion and contains the open star cluster NGC 2175 near it's centre. It is approximately 6400 light years from Earth.

This is an image from Drakesbrooke Weir I took captured back in October that I decided to re-edit since lately I have been integrating h-alpha data into my post-processing workflow. This process demands a bit more processing time and a slight readjustment to my workflow but the results highlights more details around the hydrogen alpha emission regions of the sky.

Thank you for viewing Weiburger's clasic blue Planetary Nebular. Appearing to be held in animated suspension by the streams of effervescent Hydrogen emitting dust an gas. Last year while expanding a mosaic of Cygnus out to the lower left quadrant just past Sharpless 115, I noticed a small perfectly formed planetary nebulae that looks very similar to the well known soap bubble in shape and size! This year, I re-visited Weiburger's and photographed it with higher magnification for a more detailed look.
