Front of the SUSE Linux 10.1 retail box

Some of my IT books. Some of them are for my studies at University, others are bought for personal reading and self-learning :-)

For the month of November I'll be posting a stream of ideas that I would like to see in the next version of Mac OS X, which I will hereby name "Lion" just for convenience sake. Stay tuned for some great stuff.

Sincerely,

Paul A. Chapel (PacMan3000)

My Macbook Pro running Windows XP Via VirtualBox

VirtualBox is a Type 2 Hypervisor, a user-space program which runs in the host operating system (in our case, the host OS is OpenIndiana) and emulates a hardware virtual machine, and is one of very few hypervisors running on Solaris and its descendants. It also runs on Linux, MacOS and Windows, is GPL2'ed, and the VirtualBox 4.x Extension Pack with extra features is free for "Personal Use and Evaluation", making it a very versatile tool. Its public discussion for running under Solaris-related operating systems is maintained at the product forum here: forums.virtualbox.org/viewforum.php?f=11 (participation may require a free Oracle SSO login).

This hypervisor can help when you need to run different operating systems (i.e. to support particular software) with the benefits of OpenIndiana (including CrossBow networking, ZFS storage, local zones for resource allocation, etc.) It may also be useful for developers seeking to test newly compiled OpenIndiana distributions without risk to their host OS, or to isolate certain tasks from their interactive environment. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsSiewDb7Dk

Yes, this is what it looks like—Mac OS 9 running on an Intel-based iMac. This is the result of running Sheepshaver, an emulator for the classic Mac run-time environment, and booting off an OS 9 installer disk. It was actually sort of fun playing around with OS 9 again after all these years. Remember Sherlock? And the Chooser? I'm going to install OS 9 shortly and play around with some old classic apps just to see how it runs. Might even try playing Marathon (that's ground zero for Halo for those of you who weren't playing Bungie's games back in the mid-90s.) I'm doubtful about how it will run in an emulator, but just judging from the installer boot, it looks pretty solid and runs surprisingly fast. We'll see.

Still, it's weird to me that this one machine can boot into Windows, OS X and run OS 9. (Gees, I'm such a hopeless geek. That actually gets me excited.)

Don't make flame war, make love.

Macintosh System 7.5.5 starting up...

Spoof reworking of Apple Mac's operating system Snow Leopard following a disastrous Apple system update which borked my MBP

The ZTE MF627 seems to work well out of the box with the beta of Ubuntu 10.04 (due for release on 2010-04-29). I accepted all defaults.

Unofficial logo.

This is a very old picture... back into the days when I was still using Mac OS X 10.2 "Jaguar", switched to Mac for about a year and still haven't get rid of those crappy PC behaviour (too much icons, not organized file storing system). I got Windows 3.1 running in SoftWindows 3 on System 7.6.1 in BasiliskII on Windows 2000 in Virtual PC 6 in Mac OS X 10.2.8 on iMac G4 700MHz... with 384MB Ram only. I can tell you that this is crazy and extremely slow (mainly because of Virtual PC's poor performance)

Using VMWare to install a new operating system.

I think it actually says something about the time & date settings.

This was taken on Tuesday March 29th, 2 days after the clocks went forward for daylight savings.

It looks like a Win95/98/NT style error message.

But you can see in the upper-right hand side (and along the right in general) where it is starting to return to its natural color.

It was a thrill to see this operating system installing. We had been planning and trying for a while, but finally we succeeded installing Ubuntu at work.

It is a spare computer, so it is great to experiment with it. Since we are a radio station, we will try to install an audio editor as well.

Thumbs up for Linux and Ubuntu!

it's a joke. Unix is ugly.

To improve my almost decade old Mac, I decided to upgrade the RAM, processors, hard drives, and operating system. Nothing's gone wrong so far.
