This darling came in with her dad... after karate I suppose. I hope he appreciates her adoration, beauty and openheartedness.
I had the zoom on big time. I'm not sure she actually knew I was taking her picture.

So, this week's been more than a little stressful.
My mum had her 71st birthday on Monday, and instead of dad taking her out to a fancy restaurant for dinner he had to admit her to hospital Monday afternoon for an angiogram on Tuesday, and subsequently a heart bypass operation on Thursday.
Most of the time i'm exceedingly happy to be on this side of the world, but when shit like that's going down, being on the other side of the world certainly sucks.
There are advantages to being a night owl sometimes, as at least I was often awake when updates came through, though I wasn't able to Skype or FaceTime with mum between the weekend and the operation.
Thankfully the operation was successful and took less time than expected, and from the updates I've had from Dad, Mum is doing well post-op.
To celebrate, here's a photo regrammed from my younger brother, Peter (@sweatlung on Instagram) of my mum pre-op looking rather calmer than I would have looked or felt in her situation.
hi,justa selfiee.
I can make the rain stop if I wanna,
Just by my attitude
I can take my laptop record a snapshot
And change your point of view
I just entered this brand new world
And I'm so openhearted
I know I've got a long way to go but I
I'm just getting started

On their fourteenth studio album, Grammy-winning folk-rock duo Indigo Girls deliver a beautifully crafted batch of songs that revel in spirited simplicity. Alternating richly textured storytelling with moody ruminations on modern-world worries, Beauty Queen Sister reveals a fierce longing for a more idyllic existence while still celebrating the extraordinary in everyday living. Thanks to its graceful mix of openhearted songwriting and lush, intricate arrangements—not to mention powerful performances by the band and their brigade of guest musicians—Beauty Queen Sister ultimately allows the listener to slip into the sort of dreamy serenity that Amy Ray and Emily Saliers sing of striving for throughout the record.
Decades into their career, the Indigo Girls still amaze conventional pundits with their ability to grow and thrive no matter what the state of the music industry is at any given point. Saliers and Ray began performing together in high school, transferred their honest, urgent performing style onto the stages of countless small clubs, then saw their public profile take off with the 1989 release of their self-titled breakthrough (an album that included the first hit, “Closer To Fine,” and went on to win Best Contemporary Folk Recording at the 1990 Grammys).
For the Indigo Girls, the adventure may take the form of an adrenaline-fueled live CD or a warm, reflective holiday album or a collection of songs that can veer from raucous to intimate in the blink of an eye. No matter where their creative journey takes them, they hold out a hand to their listeners and we get to feel it all.
…..Yes!! Spring - LIGHT from without, AND…..within !!!!….It sounds a bit …crazy ? Nop !!!
Well, I’ll tell you a true, really heartfelt story, about …Spring-Light from…within : my husband, has recently undergone a very successful surgery for a brain-tumor! We have been separated for some time now, but he is a man whom I still love and respect so much ( almost 36 years together, and 3 adorable children)!!!…
The moment his terrible stroke was announced , almost simultaneously, all my bitterness , dreadful memories, negative thinking about a very sad recent past , seemed to have vanished! All that was left for me to think was, that my husband of 36 years , who has been a very special father for my 3 children, and a very generous companion, was probably going to leave us soon !!!…
After the success of his difficult operation, me and my 3 children have re-united around my ex-companion as a happy family again, with true joy , tenderness, and affection !! We have enjoyed together some wonderful, warm, and joyful family moments at our home and elsewhere !! Because, during the weekends he may leave the hospital, and return to his beloved ones, to his own home (his apartment), and to ours ! After his successful operation, he has been transformed , into a serene, affectionate, smiling, joking, compassionate, openhearted, and tender human being -- my TRUE companion/husband ! –- whom I have NOT seen or felt as such for years!!… And, still intelligent and strong, as he has always been…
Therefore, I dedicate my latest Spring-Light photos to my beloved husband of 36 years, who won his first very difficult battle against a bad tumor in his brain, wishing him Love , Peace , and Harmony inside-out, non-stop ! Wishing him, to also win the following difficult battles during his post-operation, difficult treatment-stage!
My Spring-Light photos are also dedicated to ALL those human beings, who have experienced an inward RE-Birth or Spring-Light , after DEATH has knocked at their door! Because, the Divine Wisdom so often uses the Death-experience, in order to teach us TRUE , UN-conditional Love !! And then, Death becomes….. SPRING - LIGHT , and CEASES TO EXIST !! Inwardly, AND outwardly! !!!!!

LESSON SIXTEEN
Empty yourself of everything.
Let the mind rest at peace.
The ten thousand things rise and fall while the Self watches their return.
They grow and flourish and then return to the source.
Returning to the source is stillness, which is the way of nature.
The way of nature is unchanging.
Knowing constancy is insight.
Not knowing constancy leads to disaster.
Knowing constancy, the mind is open.
With an open mind, you will be openhearted.
Being openhearted, you will act royally.
Being royal, you will attain the divine.
Being divine, you will be at one with the Tao.
Being at one with the Tao is eternal.
And though the body dies, the Tao will never pass away.

It's Veteran's Day so I was looking for a World War II photo of my father. He was from Brooklyn, but after enlisting, was briefly stationed in Pueblo, Colorado, where he met and married my mother, a few months before he would go to Europe. I usually look for war-time photos in the album mom kept, beginning with their courtship and marriage in Pueblo, including photos that he sent back from overseas. But today I also looked in the boxes of my dad's photos that my cousin Rori sent me last year, photos that he had kept with him for years. I was really looking for photos of Europe today, so nearly really passed this one over. I had seen it before, and from other photos in my mom's album, had concluded that my father must have been stationed in Florida right leaving for Europe. Before casting this photo aside, I turned it over to see if it was dated, and to my surprise, on the back found a love letter to my mother, written in Spanish.
My father studied Spanish in school, and he loved it. (When I was a child, he later would read me articles in the Spanish Reader's Digest, and became the go-to person for Spanish-speaking customers in our family furniture store in Pueblo. Did my mother know Spanish? No, maybe a bit of French. But I am sure that she loved the fact that he spoke Spanish. But I know she loved my father enough to find a way to figure it out.
Well, I fell in love with this letter, so I am posting this. This wasn't at all what I was looking for, and I was thinking it might not be the best choice for Veteran's Day. But courage in war is about putting what you love on the line. My father found love shortly before leaving to do his bit against the Nazis in World War II was ironic, potentially tragic, and somehow raised the stakes for loss. My parents didn't know the future, and the fact that my father he found love on the road to war made his path all the more courageous, if you ask me.
People live on in what they pass along, how they are remembered. My father passed on his love of music, his love of languages, and most important, his kindness and openhearted nature. And his courage in the face of tyranny, an example I think about more and more. His memory is always a blessing for me, as was his life.
So here is the text of his letter in Spanish and in English (my translation):
"To Ruth
Sinceramente,
Hy"
"To Ruth
So you can remember me. I have searched for the words to write, but without success. You have a heart of gold and our minds travel the same way, that I am never so happy as when I am with you, and leaving your company is more painful than having a tooth pulled. This is not enough. You know what I want to say.
Sincerely,
Hy"
THE IMPERIAL TRANSANTACTIC EXPEDITION was a collaborative community experiment conducted on a frozen lake in the middle of winter by Mary Rothlisberger, Molly Goldberg, Amber Phelps Bondaroff, and a rotating cast of visitors. As artists and friends, we challenged one another to nurture creativity and community-building in the face of extreme scarcity and physical hardship. We spent six weeks living in a site-specific homemade structure in sub-zero temperatures, using story-telling, collaborative creative work, and positive attitudes as tools that were integral to our survival. This was a project about needing one another, the power of openhearted sharing, and the transformative experience of creating dangerously. During our time on the ice, we built a warm community of neighbors that congregated at our makeshift home in the long evenings for food, friendship, and entertainment. We self-published three sketchbook/diaries that gave personal accounts of our experiences, hosted weekly workshops on a topics like mending, soup-making, celestial navigation, and song-writing, recorded and distributed an album of original music on the ice, produced a theatrical play, an outdoor ice-capades performance, and an on-ice narrative radio show. Through creative action and intentional community-building, we formed permanent and powerful relationships within an itinerant and typically ephemeral seasonal community.

“Lord of humility, dwelling in the little pariah hut.
Help us to search for Thee throughout that fair land watered by Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Jamuna.
Give us receptiveness. Give us openheartedness. Give us Thy humility.
Give us the ability and willingness to identify ourselves with the masses of India.
O God, who does help only when we feel utterly humble, grant that we may not be isolated from the people.
We would serve as servants and friends.
Let us be embodiments of self-sacrifice, embodiments of Godliness, humility personified, that we may know the land better and love it more.”

Em and i went on an adventure today! it was so much fun!
I go where life takes me,
but some days it makes me want to change my direction
Sometimes it gets lonely,
but I know that it's only a matter of my perception
I just entered this brand new world
And I'm so openhearted
I know I've got a long way to go but I'm
I'm just getting started
