CERN did run a weekend of open days for 14/15 September.
And it is a huge success. We arrived at 10.30 AM at the ALICE site and waited for an hour to go down. Going down means you take an elevator 100 metres underground.
ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is one of the big four experiments on the LHC on the CERN. ALICE is about 25 metres by 16 metres large and has the tremendous weight of 10'000 tons.
The staff explaining what you see and how they work was truly engaged and noticed how they live for their research!

Huntingdons Rescue Vehicle. This was formerly based at Cambridge until it was recently replaced by a newer vehicle. @ Huntingdon Fire Stations open day.
A look at some of the buses that were present at the Reading Buses Open Day in July 2018. They included Reading Buses Scania K250UB4 / Irizar i3 B41F 21 YN17ONF.
Class 47 number 47353 at Longsight TMD Open Day on 26th April, 1992.
This locomotive was scrapped at C.F.Booth in Rotherham during February, 2005.

Seen at the Yellow Buses of Bournemouth open day at their Mallard Road depot in July 1986 is Brighton Dennis Dominator / East Lancs H43/31F 17 OAP17W. The bus carries an overall advert for Hanningtons department store in Brighton based on the livery style of Brighton Corporation Tramways.

Beyer-Peacock 'Hymek' B-B No. 7018 - the Hymeks were rare visitors to the London area in my spotting days, so always seem exotic to me, although four have been preserved.
British Railways 'Warship' B-B No. 821 'Greyhound' - back in 1972 'Greyhound' hauled an afternoon Bristol to Plymouth parcels train, being almost certainly the last BR Warship-hauled revenue-earning train.
British Railways 'Western' C-C No. 1015 'Western Champion' - according to Wikipedia No. 1015 was "... outshopped in the experimental 'golden ochre' livery with small yellow warning panels ..." and was recreating that livery at the time of this snap.

Bog standard Crewe n/b "Duff"47334 with the Springs Branch breakdown crane at a little known Warrington Central Open Day in September 1981, also on show was 25085 and 40115 plus a resident 08 as well as various choccy box wagons and a Mk3 sleeper. 11 October 1981.
