This vase was used for offerings, usually containing food or special flowers. It was from the Prehistoric Cycladic period and was dated from around 2300-2200 BC. It measures 13 5/8 inches, and it is one of the grandest preserved pieces of kernos to date. It was found along with a set of three: the kernos, the jar and the jug displayed at the Met Fifth Avenue Gallery in Gallery 151. The significance of this piece is that the spiritual idea of offering food and flowers to ancestors and loved ones who have passed away is a concept I am deeply familiar with. In my culture of Buddhist faith, every year for New Year’s we burn clothes and offerings to our loved ones to honor them. In this way, we hope that they will bless us with good fortune for the coming years.
