A few very small pieces of rough opal , still with some natural bits of rock still attached from where they were dug from the ground . They are quite opaque but get the light right and the colours glow from within - reds , blues , greens and yellows all come shining through .

Ethiopian opals are a variety of precious opal known for their vibrant and dynamic play of colors. These natural gemstones can range from white to black, and sometimes even display a rainbow of colors. What makes Ethiopian opals unique is their honeycomb welo pattern and high water content, contributing to their captivating play of color. Unlike most opals, which are sedimentary, Ethiopian opals are hydrophane opals formed as a result of volcanic activity.

when i was 3 yrs old i remember having a heart shaped necklace and i swore it was a gemstone which i can now identify as a black fire opal, but when going through my jewelry box at age 13 i realized it was actually made of glazed clay. black fire opal is still my favorite gemstone though. anyway, this isn't actually black fire opal either, this is a bunch of layers of flower pictures overlaid using varying blend modes, but it definitely looks like one. my intuition is telling me the blending method i used may have some relation to the physical composition of black fire opals.

There are two broad classes of opal: precious and common. Precious opal displays play-of-color, common opal does not.Play-of-color is defined as "a pseudochromatic optical effect resulting in flashes of colored light from certain minerals, as they are turned in white light. The internal structure of precious opal causes it to diffract light, resulting in play-of-color. Depending on the conditions in which it formed, opal may be transparent, translucent or opaque and the background color may be white, black or nearly any color of the visual spectrum. Black opal is considered to be the rarest, whereas white, gray and green are the most common. In addition, opal may exhibit adularescence, a form of iridescence.

Once near full the Garnet Class ship will slow steam up the California Coast to the Port of Oakland, where it will pick up the remainder of it's Asian bound cargo at TraPac Terminal in The Bay.

I've been working on a little project for a bit, and it's finally almost time to share it with you all. I very nearly set the opening for tomorrow for the lols, since it's 4/20. I figured a lot of people might be out celebrating though, and I don't want to get in the way of that lol. So 4/21 it is! We're not doing an event with a DJ or anything, just opening the place up to the public. So you can come and go as you please.

I've designed Opal Reef to be somewhat abyssal, but especially this brine pool spot my pal Adna and I are posing in here. It's something I've been planning in my head for a long time, as I've always loved abyssal waters and the creepy creatures that roam around in them. So don't worry if you see a few critters around that you're not used to, they won't bite. Unless I tell them to. 😈
