One Step for a Nation, One step for Humanity?

Where is a Mr./Ms Smith when you need them?

Maybe this is the person and he has arrived in Washington to help the little guy and do the right thing for our nation & for the world.

Or is it just a pipe dream that I'm having again?

I've been going through some archives for my book on Bald Eagles and I came across this photo. How I loved that crisp fall morning at Oxbow Bend in #GrandTetonNationalPark, one of my favorite places in the world. I always wished I had been just a bit closer and the image just a bit sharper but, nonetheless, I think its worthy of posting and I'm going to do my best to work it into the book. For eagles the point of contact with water must be precise. Miscalculate the distance and a swim to shore will be required. Unlike Osprey, eagles are not able to fly out of the water if they are submerged. It makes the moment even more special. #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #ILoveBirds #OxbowBend #WildlifePhotography in #GTNP #Nature in #Wyoming #Birds #Birding #Eagles #BaldEagles #OneNation

The Bald Eagle is an opportunistic feeder. It will take a variety of animals, both living and dead. It subsists, however, mainly on fish, that it plucks from the water with amazing grace. Most of its hunting, therefore, takes place at the air water interface, a physical boundary between two bulk phases, namely liquid and air (or liquid vapor). The physical property of water (and liquids in general) that give its surface form, essentially pulling the molecules together, is called surface tension. In the nature of fish and eagles this scientific term has a more poetic interpretation. #iLoveWildlife #iLoveNature #WildlifePhotography in #Maryland #Nature in #USA #Bald Eagles #DrDADBooks #OneNation #WildlifeConservation

"A child of no more than eight walked with her mother one day in demonstration. An amused policeman leaned down to her and said with mock gruffness,

'What do you want?' The child looked into his eyes, unafraid, and gave her answer.

'F'eedom,' she said.

'She could not even pronounce the word, but no Gabriel trumpet could have sounded a truer note."

Above this nation's skies so blue

The eagle took a maiden flight

For liberty and human right.

Immortalized upon the seal

Native arrows it does wield

Symbolizing might and strength

An olive branch for peace at length."

Two days after the people of the United States voted for their new President, the nation continues to be at war with itself. Hillary Clinton won the popular vote based on taking the metropolitan areas like California and New York- places packed with people. If, however, you look at the map of the states that were predominantly in favor of Donald Trump, you see a nation that almost completely leaned in the direction of a more conservative candidate. Hillary convinced the most people in those urban areas- who generally DO vote Democratic- but almost every state went to Trump. In the end, the way our nation works, it is the electoral college, and how many votes each state is attributed, that decides who wins. Even though she won huge states like California, with 55 electoral votes, almost all the smaller counts went to Trump. People who live on a farm matter as much in the United States as people who live in a high rise. Our system guarantees that the urban areas won't always be able to nudge out the small guys in the grand scheme of things. Never has the electoral college shown itself to be more powerful than it did in this election.

Now, America is a country of protests and cursing, mixed with joy and relief. I wouldn't want to be Donald Trump right now for anything! It will take someone with the kind of stamina and nerve that he has had in his high power business dealings all these years just to survive it, and to try to get Americans simmered down enough to work with him towards a better future. We have just a couple of months before he is sworn into office, and hopefully, the holidays will make everyone less hostile. Meanwhile, Old Glory, as we affectionately refer to our flag, still flies over a divided nation.

Bald Eagles were busy this weekend capturing fish at Conowingo Dam, even if some of the fish were no more than tasty tidbits. Many of the birds would pass the smallest fish to their bills, in flight, and return to capture more. Their large talons made handling these smaller fish a bit of a task. Many a fish was dropped. Contrary to popular belief, one eagle miscalculated its dive and ended up in the water. It managed to emerge from the water and fly away and didn't need to swim to shore, as has been so frequently written. Every day that I observe nature I learn something new! #iLoveNature #iLoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #Maryland #ConowingoDam #BaldEagles #DrDADBooks #OneNation #Canon #WildlifeConservation

No matter how much we seem to be in pieces, we will somehow pull it together- it is an age-old puzzle, but I DO believe that we can do it! We have NEVER failed before!

I gave my Dad a puzzle today; I always give Mom a "prize" when she comes down for Art Day, but I thought how fun for Dad to get a "prize," too, when I went to get here! This is part of it! He was tickled! :)

It is an old American phrase that appears to have origins in the earliest parts of the 20th century advertising. It had been falsely ascribed to old Chinese or Japanese proverbs. It is as American as the Bald Eagle. #APictureisWorth #AmericanPhrase #BaldEagle #Conowingo #Maryland #DrDADBooks #OneNation #Canon #WildlifeConservation

USWNT vs. South Korea 5-30-2015

lasted less than 5 minutes, which is fine with me!

The eagles at the dam today were buffeted by high winds, leaving them less than anxious to dive for fish. After all, no eagle wants to take a swim in cold flowing water if it can be avoided. So I thought I'd post a photo from last weekend, when the conditions were a bit better and these beautiful birds did their best to put on a show.

There is no doubt that photography is all about light and how it interacts with a subject in a delicate dance to produce something esthetically engaging. Light, color, and gesture, have been touted as the three quintessential elements of a good photo by great photographers like Jay Maisel. These three components coalesce into a digital soup from which the boundaries of one may well supersede the limits of another. As photographers we value light, but should never underestimate the power of shadow. Yes, shadow can obscure, but it can also provide definition, strengthen emotion, and elucidate power in an image. The shadow of this eagle's talon is the supplemental spice that makes this image ever so slightly more delicious. It is the shadow that knows the true power, helping to define this magnificent raptor by means of the photographer's lens. #iLoveNature #iLoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #Maryland #Conowingo #BaldEagles #DrDADBooks #OneNation #WildlifeConservation

I purchased this book not long after the horrible events of 9/11 and although it is a great read it most certainly is a difficult read. Each year on the anniversary I pick up One Nation and begin to read, again!

A Bald Eagle give a classical second look to see what it has caught while hunting at Conowingo Dam in Maryland. What seemed to be an unusual pose at first turns out to be fairly common. They frequently look to see what they've caught after the catch it. Watching their aerial displays is always a treat. I imaging the fish don't think so, however. Conowingo is one of the premier east coast locations for watching the official bird of America during the fall and winter seasons. Each day hundreds gather with cameras, binoculars, or just the naked eye for this bird, brought back from the verge of annihilation. They are becoming more frequent just about everywhere. #iLoveNature #iLoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #Maryland #Nature in #NorthAmerica #USA #BaldEagles #DrDADBooks #Canon #WildlifeConservation

A bald eagle flying overhead sees a fish in the water. The bird makes a quick turn, then tucks and dives. It doesn't look like this could be intentional. Nor does it appear that dropping like a rock from the sky could turn out well, but just as quickly it turns and spreads its wings, gliding to the surface. The eagle can't delay the hunt and circle slowly overhead. Other eagles would swoop in and take the fish. Quick responses like this one must be accurate. If an eagle miscalculates the dive, it could hit the water! Unlike Osprey, that can take off after complete submersion, eagles must swim to shore or drown. Being an eagle has its inherent dangers. They are amazing birds!

Lee was born a British subject in 1923 at 92 Kampong Java Road in Singapore. According to his memoirs, Lee was first educated at Telok Kurau Primary School. He described his primary students at Telok Kurau as poor and not very bright and advantaged. He then attended Raffles Institution (RI).

In RI, Lee had difficulties keeping up because he met the top 150 students from all over Singapore. He made an effort to get into the top class and joined the Scouts for three years. He also played cricket, tennis and chess and debated for the Institution.

During his junior Cambridge years, he obtained several scholarships and subsequently came in top for the School Certificate examinations, obtaining the John Anderson scholarship to attend Raffles College (now National University of Singapore). Lee was the top student in Singapore and Malaya.

Only in the Heartland

The plains states have some of the most beautiful sunrises I've been privileged to witness. Combined with our Flag, its breathtaking.

This bald eagle knows that when she catches a fish the best place for her to go is near humans. She perches in a tree not 30 feet from us. She has come to realize that most other eagles are too intimidated by humans to come close. She can eat her meal in peace, without fear that another eagle will swoop in and steal it. She is about 4 years of age, and although her head feathers are turning white, they have not completed the change. Bald eagles take up to 5 years to develop the adult plumage they are known for. When she is finished with her meal she wastes no time leaving us behind. We are otherwise of little use. Fascinating that a 4 year old bird should be so cunning! Don't you agree? #ILoveNature #ILoveWildlife #WildlifePhotography in #Maryland #Nature in #America #USA #Conowingo #BaldEagles #Canon #Bringit #DrDADBooks #OneNation #Photography #Picoftheday #Photooftheday

Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Louis

St. Louis is an independent city and inland port in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is situated along the western bank of the Mississippi River, which marks Missouri's border with Illinois. The Missouri River merges with the Mississippi River just north of the city. These two rivers combined form the fourth longest river system in the world. The city had an estimated 2017 population of 308,626 and is the cultural and economic center of the St. Louis metropolitan area (home to nearly 3,000,000 people), which is the largest metropolitan area in Missouri, the second-largest in Illinois (after Chicago), and the 22nd-largest in the United States.

Before European settlement, the area was a regional center of Native American Mississippian culture. The city of St. Louis was founded in 1764 by French fur traders Pierre Laclède and Auguste Chouteau, and named after Louis IX of France. In 1764, following France's defeat in the Seven Years' War, the area was ceded to Spain and retroceded back to France in 1800. In 1803, the United States acquired the territory as part of the Louisiana Purchase. During the 19th century, St. Louis became a major port on the Mississippi River; at the time of the 1870 Census it was the fourth-largest city in the country. It separated from St. Louis County in 1877, becoming an independent city and limiting its own political boundaries. In 1904, it hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and the Summer Olympics.

The economy of metropolitan St. Louis relies on service, manufacturing, trade, transportation of goods, and tourism. Its metro area is home to major corporations, including Anheuser-Busch, Express Scripts, Centene, Boeing Defense, Emerson, Energizer, Panera, Enterprise, Peabody Energy, Ameren, Post Holdings, Monsanto, Edward Jones, Go Jet, Purina and Sigma-Aldrich. Nine of the ten Fortune 500 companies based in Missouri are located within the St. Louis metropolitan area. The city has also become known for its growing medical, pharmaceutical, and research presence due to institutions such as Washington University in St. Louis and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. St. Louis has two professional sports teams: the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball and the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League. One of the city's iconic sights is the 630-foot (192 m) tall Gateway Arch in the downtown area.

The Grove is a business district located along Manchester Avenue (Missouri Route 100) between Kingshighway Boulevard and Vandeventer Avenue in the Forest Park Southeast (FPSE) neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. Formerly known as the Manchester Strip, the retail drag was first developed in the late 19th century to serve the working-class population of Forest Park Southeast. Today, the Grove is home to a variety of restaurants, bars, and clubs, including a significant number of LGBT-oriented establishments. The district is supported by a community improvement district (CID), created in 2009, which levies an additional sales tax on businesses within its boundaries to fund infrastructure and branding services.

The Grove is within walking distance of the Washington University Medical Center, Forest Park, and the Central West End and Cortex MetroLink light rail stations.
